ATTAWAY

Feb 2005

I have found John T Attaway's Confederate pension record in the Alabama Archives.   It can be viewed at the following link:
http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/soldier.cfm?id=5219    It seems to confirm the information below regarding the unit to which he belonged.  It also indicates that he was wounded Peach Tree Creek and that he enlisted at Hardyville (sic), SC.  That probably should be Hardeeville, which is about 5 miles north of the Georgia state line near Savannah.

Jan 2004

I have received some information that suggests that John T Attway is in fact buried at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Dale County and has a Confederate marker which indicates that he was a Private in Company H of the 54th Georgia Infantry. So, the mystery continues. I guess I may have to take a trip to Dale County to verify this info.

New Info - May 2003
Well the search for JT Attaway's ancestry goes on.  It turns out that he appears in the 1900, 1910 & 1920 Census for Ozark, Dale County, Alabama.  In the 1900 & 1920 Census he is listed as John T. Attaway, age 54 & 74 respectively.  His wife (my GGrandmother) Mary is listed as 45 & 65.  These ages would be correct.   In 1900, they are listed as having been married for 36 years, which means they were married in 1864.  My line, as determined to date, is:

                      JT (John T ) Attaway (b 1845 Ga.) + Mary E.  (b 1855 Ga.)

Ora Cornelia Attaway (b 1894 Al.) + William Lon Edwards (b 1887 Al.)

Ruby Marguerite Edwards (b 1924 Fl.) + Arthur Stanley Churchill (b 1918 Me.)

Stephen Clyde Churchill (b 1947 NY)

WHAT MY RESEARCH HAS PREVIOUSLY DISCOVERED

J T Attaway

I can trace my great grandfather, J T Attaway, back to his birth in Georgia on 23 Nov. 1845 (though the 1910 US Census suggests 1844). He died 22 July 1922. JT appears to have been married to Mary E. ??? about 1868. She was born about 1855 in Georgia and died 1 July 1932. They moved to Dale County, Alabama probably sometime after 1870.  Although JT and Mary were from Georgia, as were many Attaways, I've not been able to trace their lines back beyond them.  There are possible lines, but nothing definate.

At the time of the 1910 Census, JT and Mary lived at Barnes Crossroads, Dale County, Alabama. According to the Census they rented a farm on Blue Springs Road and lived with their teenage daughter Ora Cornelia Attaway. On the same road there lived a GW Attaway, aged 41 and born in Georgia. Quite possibly, GW was their son. Blue Spring is a town just north of Dale Co. in Barbour Co. This would suggest that Barnes Cross Roads (precinct 12) may have been in NE Dale Co. I have not been able to find Barnes Cross Roads on present day map.

starsbar.gif (942 bytes) JT appears to have served in the Civil War as a soldier of the Confederacy.  I recently found out that his tombstone reads as follows: Attaway,J.T. Co A 59th Ga.Inf. Nov 23,1845 - July 11,1922. He is buried at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetary, County Road 13, Arguta, Dale ,Alabama.  This information appears at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/1767/page2.html   I've not been able to find JT on any rosters for the 59th Georgia, or any other Civil War regiment.

Ora Cornelia Attaway

My maternal grandmother, Ora was born at Ozark, Dale, Alabama on 22 Jun 1894, She died at Hialeah, Dade, Florida on 9 Feb 1937. In the 1910 Census her parents are listed as married for 42 years and Ora ppears to be youngest of 9 children (7 alive in 1910) and the only one living at home. Census also indicates that she had been in school within the prior 9 months and that she could read and write. See US Census for Dale County, Ala. 1910, page 0651 Supv 3, Enum Dist 92, Sheet 6.

My mother has Ora's funeral register and family bible. Relatives at Ora's funeral were Frank Edwards and Pauline Attaway. Funeral register says that she was 42 years, 8 months, 9 days old.

Ora married William Lon Edwards on 12 Nov 1911. They had four children: William Theodore "Ted" (1913-1973), William Lon, Jr. "Bill" (1919-1971) Eugene Aubrey (1921 died young) and Ruby Marguerite (1924- ). Ted was born at Ariton, Dale, Alabama. All others were born in northern Florida.
