¶ Behold, I will send you Elijah the
prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day
of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. (Malachi 4:5-6) Members of the Church are privileged to do vicarious ordinance work in the temple for their deceased ancestors, who, they believe, would have received the gospel if they had had the opportunity in this life. In order to this, the dead must be properly identified. Thus genealogical research is a major activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
