Members of the Church are privileged to do vicarious ordinance work in the temple for their deceased ancestors, who, they believe, would have received the gospel if they had had the opportunity in this life. In order to this, the dead must be properly identified. Thus genealogical research is a major activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
