JERUSALEM EATERIES
These are some of my favourite places to eat in Jerusalem.
All are kosher and none know that I have recommended them
(no conflict of interest!)
- Amigos - excellent Mexican style place with meat and vegetarian dishes, located on the Yoel Solomon Street pedestrian mall.
- Amigos just opened a dairy place, around the corner. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll let you know!
- Sima's - an original Israeli 'steakiya' - anything you want grilled, they have. also, incredible service, wonderful array of salads, and the fries, oh the fries! - located on Agrippas near Machane Yehuda
- Cafe Masarik - a small coffee house serving good pasta - try the aglia-olio with leeks and sun-dried tomatoes, located on Emek Refaim.
- Norman's Bar and Grill - a great steak and hamburger place (with a very limited vegetarian menu = soup, baked potato, salad) on Emek Refaim in the German Colony. A few friends of mine and I enjoy (to put it mildly) the appetizer sampler platter - a whole meal!
(Here's a funny story about that: one evening Danny Siegel and I decide to hit Norman's for the appetizer platter - just a nosh. A few minutes after we ordered, the waitress (Cara, a great waitress) tells us that the deep fryer is broken, but will be fixed shortly. So we said, 'just bring the other stuff from the platter in the meantime' and she said 'well, EVERYTHING on the platter is deep fried!'.) gotta love it!
- Pavarotti - They are moving to Kikar Safra, where the municipality offices are -- EXCELLENT and creative Italian fare - if you want regular so-called
'Italian' food - DON'T go to Pavarotti. BUT if you want some great tasting, unique and authentic Italian dishes (pastas and fish) - head straight to Pavarotti. it is above moderately priced, but worth every shekel.
- Marvad Hakesamim - while the emphasis is on grilled items (steak, 'steak ohf' - chicken), the salad bar is quite impressive and incredible inexpensive, located on King George Street downtown (they moved after 30 years - still on King George, but at number 16, next to Carvel's and the Bank Hapoalim .
- Miami Pizza - out of business. oh well. Sababa Pizza (on Emek Refaim) is still wonderful. Especially the onion pizza.
- Luigi's - italian, down on the yoel solomon pedestrian mall, serving good gnocchi and an excellent aribieta sauce!
- Falafel Doron - falafel and shewarma and fries and a bunch of salads - decent, plentiful and tasty; at the corner of Emek Refaim and Rachel Imenu.
More to come - don't worry. And if you want your favourite place included, just email me.
And now back to the home page
