William Alston was born c. 1858 on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. He was one of at least four children. (We believe his father's name was Peter, but we have not yet confirmed this information.) Two of his brothers were Paul Austin and Allen Belton. The only sister we discovered thus far is Beulah.
Family lore reports that William fathered a total of twenty-two children.In c. 1890, he married Sarah Drayton. Together they had twelve children:
