Immortal Words:
Sojourner Truth

"That man say that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches and to have the best places everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud puddles, or gives me any best place, and ain't I a woman? I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns and no man could head me - and ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man (when I could get it) and bear the lash as well - and ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children and seen them most all sold off into slavery, and when I cried out with a mother's grief, none but Jesus heard - and ain't I a woman?

Gholson Land Records In GenWeb Archives

Gholson land grants for Anthony Sr., Anthony Jr., & William Gholson can be viewed at Spotsylvania County Archives. Anthony Gholson's will is included in the Halifax County Archives. And Orange County FTP Archives contains Orange County Gholson deeds. The Gholson land grants are the earliest official records we have found pertaining to our family.

Powell Stories Placed In The GenWeb Archives

Two Powell family stories are now part of the GenWeb Archives Project. Mary Elizabeth Powell Saul and Irene Decker Powell Rudolph have each writen autobiographical stories about their pioneer experiences. Their stories are delightful and revealing to anyone interested in pioneer history. You do not need to be related to these ladies to enjoy their stories.

Mary Elizabeth Powell Saul's story I Remember Yesterday has been place in the South Dakato GenWeb Archives. Mary Powell Saul was born December 20, 1897 to William Henry Powell and Vina Ann Darrington Powell. She was the first of seven children born at their home in Boomer Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. In 1904, when Mary was only seven years old and South Dakota was still frontier country, her family moved by train to Gregory, South Dakota. Don Ryan sent us Mary’s life story told in her own words. The entire manuscript is now accessible from the GenWeb archives. Mary's story is a wonderful, first-hand account of pioneer life in Gregory County, South Dakota. Don't miss it.

Irene Decker Powell Rudolph's story Powell Family History In Montana is in the Wyoming GenWeb Archives. Click on Sheridan and you will see Irene's Story. Irene married Harry Powell, son of Willis & Eva Powell. Her story is rich with details about Montana ranch life in the 1930's. This link will take you directly to Powell Family History In Montana.

If you have a computer file (family story like these, will, land record, estate record, etc.) that you would like to place on the web, mail us and we will either help you place the file or place it for you, as you prefer. Anyone who has been researching their family should have a few files that the GenWeb project would accept. We want to thank the volunteers at GenWeb for making all this possible. It is a great resource!

Answers To Queries

John P. Renfree Looking for the Powell Family cemetery near the Mercer Co. and Boyle CO. line Lewis Allman buried there. Gravestones and monuments in the cemetery, surrounded by a flagstone wall. A buggy rides distance from the old Lewis Allman homesite.

Found the cemetery!

In the letter written in 1981, my grandfathers cousin spoke of a relative named Stuart who owned a Ford agency in Danville. I called the chamber of commerce with very little hope of any connection to be told that there was a "Stuart Powell Ford" in Danville. Anyway, I talked with Stuart (grandson of Joseph A. Powell and a Westerfield). He called a few relatives and located the cemetery in Mercer Co., unkept, in the area of the Perryville Battle site. This fits since the Union commandeered the home and used it as a hospital.

The Mercer County, Kentucky GenWeb project coordinator, Pam Durstock, is transcribing, (presently about 30% complete), the 1850 Mercer County census. If your family was in Mercer County in 1850 this is a great resourse. The person responsible for this county is Pam Carey Durstock. If you have data files that contain Mercer County records, contact Pam. She is doing a wonderful job adding new files to the project, but it would be nice if we would all give her a helping hand.

Pam has made the Mercer County site searchable. Try it.

Use the form below to search for your surname. All Mercer County Genealogy pages will be searched, and you'll be given a list of every page where that surname appears.

Once you visit a given page, you can then use the 'Find' button on your browser to go directly to that name.

Roots Web Arkansas Land Records Database

RootsWeb has a searchable database of 244,456 General Arkansas Land Office Records to 1908. I found several of our surnames in this database including Kiff, Gaddy, Aday & Maples. Try it and see if your ancestor homesteaded in Arkansas.

Another Site that is Crazy about Search Buttons!

Geocities Cities Heartland 1717 is a great Web Page Help Site. They have many search buttons, but they don't have the cute crawling ants like our Search Button Page
