What is a Budgerigar?

(Melopstiiacus Undulatus)

A more common name for Budgerigars is Parakeet or Budgie. Budgerigars are native to Australia, where they can be found flying in huge flocks. The name Budgerigar comes for the Autstralian aboriginal dialect and roughly translated means "Good Food". The size of Budgerigars in the wild is approximately 18 cm (7 and 1/16 inches) in length. However, show birds are expected to be at least 24.25 cm (9.5 inches) inches in length. (I know, the conversions aren't exact; I approximated :) )

So, what is a Parakeet then?

A parakeet is any of the slender bodied, long tailed parrots. They include, but are not limited to: Cockatiels, Budgerigars, Grass Parakeets ( Scarlet Chested, Tourquoisines, Bourkes, etc.),
