*****Next Meeting, A BAGEL BREAKFAST, at the Valley Stream American Legion
on Roosevelt Av. @ 10:00 am on April 13.*****

Thank You

Rich Ostrowski arranged for our use of the American Legion. This hall suits us real well and it looks like it will be our home for a while. As usual, (but not next month because she will be on vacation) Theresa Falco arranged for the food. Thank You both.

The Mailing List is Back

OK so the type is small, real small. Its all there. If it's wrong, let me know. Please add relevant information like fax #, e-mail etc. Rest assured, we will not sell our list to any siding salespeople.

Tip of the Month

To stretch or not to stretch, nobody really knows for sure. What works for you? If you are not stretching and you never get hurt, forgetaboutit. If you are getting hurt repeatedly and you're not stretching, then you probably aughta. The experts are rather divided on this subject but most come down in support of stretching. A couple of thoughts on the subject. Stretching after running may be more helpful than before but most people only stretch before. It should never hurt. If stretching hurts, then stop; you are going too far.

Festive Sendoffs

Two runners who have graced our path for many years are moving from Valley Stream. A party for Harry Feigenbaum, who was a VSRC Charter Member, was acknowledged on March 1 for twenty years of running and his move to Manhattan. A party for John Coleman followed at the Great American Cafe on March 9. John's party was well-attended and a good time was had by all, (except for the people who wanted to watch the end of the Knicks game). John was saluted for his years of service to the club and given a plaque to acknowledge his accomplishments (which are too numerous to fit on a plaque or here). While it's always nice to have a party its a shame to lose old friends.

Minutes 3/9 Meeting; "Shaddap and Run! Nobody ever died from a damn stitch!":

The president reviewed upcoming events. It was reemphasized that for events to be successful people have to show up. We had a good turnout at two recent running events; the Eisenhower Park Marathon Relay (see attached article by newly crowned deputy editor Bob Croon) and the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

We were given a rousing description of each race. Bob Croon told about the Brooklyn Half and the dangers associated with running into boardwalk benches. John Coleman gave results and a gripping recapitulation of events surrounding the Marathon Relay. Stan reprised his Emmy-Award Winning performance as crazed cross-country coach on amphetamines. Suffice it to say that woe betides the runner who doesn't win their heat if Coach Stan thinks that they aughta.

Get Wired!

Well, if you check the Running Clubs page in the Long Island Page of Pages, you will see a listing for Valley Stream. Modest progress, but progress nonetheless.

Take a Hike!

Rich Ostrowski has arranged another hike at Harriman State Park. It will be April 6, departing from the pool at 7:30 AM. The hike will be 5-6 miles on fairly rugged terrain. Please bring lunch, water, a camera, first aid stuff, and wear boots. If it rains hard we don't go. Please call Rich to confirm a spot for carpooling and if there's a question about the weather. (By the way, Rich called and gave me this information and I, dutifully, put it in the newsletter. That is how it is supposed to work. You too can call, fax--ya gotta call before ya fax--or E-mail me stuff as well. Please do.)

Race Results

People have not been racing much it seems. At the Brooklyn Half, which is back on the streets, and the boardwalk, and the park, we had a real good turnout: Vinny Scaglione ran 1:37:08; Mike Gillen 1:40:55; Bob Croon 1:45:06; John Cranston 1:47:55: and Joe Tito ran 2:09... At the Baldwin Finish into the Wind 5K on 3/15 Ted Orosz ran 22:05 and John Corrigan in 23:10, which as usual was good for first in his age group. Barbara McDermott ran 38 minutes...

Speed Work, and Hill Work and Long Runs

Punishing, invigorating, rewarding and free. Speed work continues Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm. We meet at the pool. Likewise, hill work in Alley Pond Park continues on Sunday mornings; we meet in the BostonMarket/Mandee's lot at 8:00 am. Call Stan for information for both. For long runs we meet on Saturday mornings at 7:00 am in the park. If you're a little late not to worry. We will be there for a while. Call Bob Croon.
