How to Outsmart the Mugger

Getting mugged these days is a real and personal threat, not something that happens just to other people. Not only must you prepare yourself, but your entire family should be taught how to act to survive an attack. If only one member of a group that is held up responds badly, all of you might be hurt. Mugging's are not to be confused with rape. A mugger is after only one thing, your valuable possessions.

Fortunately, most mugging's are simple robberies in which neither the criminal nor the victim is hurt. However, the possiblity of violence is always there.

First Rule :

Cooperate. Assume the mugger is armed. No matter how strong or fit you are, you are no match for a gun or knife.

Remember :

Your personal safety is far more important than your valuables or your pride.

Specific Recommendations :

* Follow the mugger's instructions to the letter. Try not to move too quickly or too slowly...either could upset him.
* Stay as calm as possible, and encourage companions to do the same. * Give the mugger what ever he asks for. Don't argue, but if something is of great sentimental value to you, give it to him and then tell him that is has special values to you. Never upset him by saying he can't have it because it means too much to you. Show him you would like some kind of compassion from him, by not taking it.
* When he has all that he wants of your valuables, do what he says for his escape. If he tells you to lie down, ask him if you should be face down. Cooperate with him every step of the way and this will prevent you from getting hurt. If he dismisses you, leave the scene immediately and don't look back. Don't call the police until you are in a safe place.

Most crimals are not anxious to hurt you. If there is no violence, the criminal gets a lesser charge, but you are unharmed and alive. Mugging is like a job to many practioners. If you respond in a business like manner with a minimum of words and gestures, it will likely be over quickly and without injury.

Some important DON'TS :

* Don't reach for your wallet or purse without explaining first what you intend to do. The mugger might think you are reaching for a gun.
* Don't give him dirty looks or make judgemental remarks.
* Don't threaten him with hostile comments.
* Don't be a wiseguy or a joker. Even smiling is a dangerous idea. He may think you are laughing at him and take offense to it.
* Don't try any tricks like carrying a second wallet to give a mugger. This common ruse could make the mugger angry. Some experts even recommend you carry at least $25 with you at all times to keep from upsetting a mugger. Muggers are often as frightened and inexperienced as you are, which is important not to upset them and cooperate with them to the fullest.

If you ever encounter such a situation like this, do whatever the mugger instructs you to do and cooperate with him to the best possible way that you are capable of doing. If you follow this tip, it just may save your life one day.
