MARY LAVINA FRANCISCO

Mrs. Mary Sortor. After many long years of patient suffering Mrs. Mary Lavina Sortor passed peacefully away on Wed. Morning Nov. 29th. She was born in Geneva, N.Y. in 1822. At the age of 12 came to Mich. with her parents & settled in Monroe County. She was married to John Sortor in 1841, who died 1903. She is survived by five children Justus Sortor & Mrs N.M Thomas of this city. Elijah Sortor of Samaria; Mrs. William Murphy of Latchie, O.; & Mrs. Len Mill of Toledo; also one sister and three brothers. For many years she has been a faithful member of the M. E. Church. The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter Mrs. N. M. Thomas, 112 Godfory Ave. Saturday morning Dec. 2 at 10:00 o'clock Rev. Shaw officiating. Her remains were buried beside her husband's in the Sackett Cemetery.

ANNA HENRIETTA WILOMINA LOUISE KREGEL

Mrs. Erving Sortor, 45 of 915 Harrison St. died at 4:10 a.m. today in the home of her sister Mrs. Walter Aichler of 3563 Stewart Rd. She had been in ill health five years and was taken to the Aicher home a week ago when her condition became serious. The body was taken to the Liedel funeral home at Maybee to the Aicher residence late this afternoon and will remain there for services Wednesday at 2 p.m. Services in the First Evangelical United Brethren Church will be at 2:30. The Rev. W. P. Peck will officiate and burial will be in the King Cemetery on the South Custer Rd. Born Dec. 16, 1901 in Paulding County, Ohio, she was the former Anna Kregel, daughter of Henry and Augusta Kregel and came to Michigan with her parents in 1911. She married Erving Sortor who survives, was Dec. 20, 1919 at Adrian. Her father died several years ago, her mother Feb. 9, 1946, and sister Mrs. Ella Stadler last October. Besides her husband, she leaves four sons Gilbert, Gerald, Stanley and Donald of Monroe, a daughter Dolores of Monroe, and her sister Mrs. Aichler, three brothers, Alvin and Carl of Bluebush Rd. and Henry of Toledo and three grandchildren.

HENRY KREGEL

Henry Kregel, aged 69 years, died suddenly at his home on the Bluebush road in Frenchtown Friday at 12:20 p.m. The cause was apoplexy. Mr. Kregel came to the United States from Hanover, Germany in 1882 and made his home in Paulding county in Ohio until 1911 when he came to Monroe county and had been a farmer here since then. He was married to Miss Augusta Plassman of Napoleon, Ohio. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Alvin and Carl, who live at home and Henry Kregel of Toledo, three daughters, Mrs. Michael Stadler and Mrs. Erving Sortor of Raisinville and Mrs. Walter Aichler of Monroe and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at the home at 1:30 p.m. and at the Sandy Creek Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. The Rev. Adolf Roeder will officiate. Burial will be at Sandy Creek Cemetery.

FERRIS LAMONT MILLER

Ferris L. Miller, 64, of 856 Rambow Dr., died of cancer at 8:35 p.m. yesterday in his home. He had been in poor health a year and seriously ill since May. Friends may call at the Earl Little Funeral Home where services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. James Underwood of the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church will officiate and burial will be in Rath Cemetery. The son of William and Flora Miller, he was born Nov. 10, 1900, in London Township. He married Edna Westgate, Dec. 22, 1918, in Monroe. Before his retirement four years ago, he was employed for 38 years as a molder at the Monroe Steel Castings Co. He was a member of the Calvary EUB Church. Surviving are his wife; two sons, the Rev. Ferris E. Miller of Anderson, Ind., and Lamont Miller of Monroe; 2 daughters, Mrs. Jack (Marguerite) White and Mrs. Gilbert (Florabell) Sortor, both of Monroe; three brothers Clyde of Monroe, Delbert of LaSalle, and Leonard of Milan; 5 sisters, Mrs. William (Ethel) Barnaby and Mrs. John (Mary) Wilkie, both of Monroe, Mrs. Carl (Elva) Hochradel of Baltimore, Ohio, Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Aiston of New York City, and Mrs. Jay (Lovella) Snell of Dundee; 14 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

AUGUSTA PLASSMAN

Mrs. Augusta Plassman Kregel of Bluebush road, 76, died of complications at 9:20 p.m. Saturday at Mercy Hospital where she had been confined three days. Born in Lippe Detmould Germany, November 6, 1869, she came to the United States at the age of 14 and settled in Napoleon, Ohio. She was married to Henry Kregel August 30, 1888 at Napoleon, the Rev. Lewis Damman officiating. On April 1, 1911 they moved on the Bluebush road and had lived there since. Mr. Kregel died November 7, 1930. She was a member of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church at Sandy Creek and of the Ladies Aid Society. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Michael Stadler, Mrs. Erving Sortor and Mrs Walter Aichler, all of Monroe; three sons, Alvin and Carl of Monroe and Henry of Toledo, 18 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a brother August Plassman of Mapoleon. The body will be removed for the Liedel funeral home, Maybe, to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Aichler, 3563, Stewart raod. Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Stewart road residence to be followed at 2:30 from Holy Ghost Church. The Rev. John Hiebar will officiate and burial will be in Gethsemane. The Ladies Aid Society will attend the funeral in a group.

EMERY SORTER

Emery Sorter, 42, of 5836 Vail St., was found dead yesterday in the garage at his home, after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Sorter was a lifelong resident of the Temperance-Toledo area. He was employed at the H.H. Bundy Corp. He served with the infantry in the South Pacific during World War II, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; daughters Sudan, Sherry, Janet, and Sandra, all at home; brother Leon, of Battle Creek, Mich.; sisters, Mrs. Hattie Sheppard, Lambertville,; Mrs. Myrtle Johns, Samaria, Mich., : Mrs Edith Hughes, Whiteford, Mich.; Mrs. Helen Fulton, Temperance, and Mrs. Ruth Coppernoll, and Mrs. Ethel Kuntz, both of Logansport, Ind. Services will be Monday t 1:30 p.m. in the H. F. Birkenkamp Mortuary, Trilby with burial in Union Cemetery, Whiteford.

GRACE E. SORTORE

Grace E. Sortore, 69, of 55 N. Main St., Wellsville, died at home after a long illness Thursday. She was born March 26, 1911 in Belmont, the daughter of William and Josephine Axtell Sortore. She had lived in this area all her life and had been married to Dalton Thurber, who preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Frances) Emmons of Batavia; several grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Charles (Eva) Utter of Wellsville, Mrs. Lawrence (Pearl) Thurber of Shortville, and Mrs. Bernard (Mabel) Carlin of Wellsville; a brother Richard Sortore of Angelica; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call to the J.W. Embser and Sons Funeral Home, Wellsville, form 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, where funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. William Atkins of the First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery Wellsville. Memorials may be made to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

MARIAN S. SORTORE

HONESDALE, PA. - Marian S. Benson of 309 Green St., died Oct. 25 at Wayne County Memorial Hospital in Honesdale following an illness. Born in Belmont, N.Y., on April 11, 1900, she was the daughter of William and Esther Corbin Sortore. A former Westfield, N.Y., resident, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale. She was married to Carl Benson who died July 30, 1957. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Phyllis) Cook Korb of Honesdale; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were Oct. 27. Burial was in Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.

RAYMOND SORTORE

On Dec. 27, 1996, Raymond Sortore passed away in his home in Lakewood, Wash. Born March 12, 1953 in Anchorage, Alaska. Survivors include, daughter Heather of Las Vegas, Nev., brother Robert of Tacoma, Wash. and nephew David Gleason of Salem, Ore.

EDNA MARGUERITE WESTGATE

Columbia, Tenn. - Services have been set for Edna M. Miller, 89, of Columbia, formerly of Rambow Dr., Monroe, who died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Columbia Health Care Center. She had been in poor health for four years. Friends may call after 7 tonight in the Earle Little Funeral Home, Monroe, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Gary Singer will officiate and burial will be in Rath Cemetery, Monroe. Born July 11, 1902, in Monroe, she was the daughter of Jarvis D. and Lucy (Wayne) Westgate. She was married Dec. 23, 1919, to Ferris Miller in Monroe. He preceded her in death Jan. 4, 1965. Mrs. Miller had lived in Monroe all her life until moving to Columbia to live with a son. While living in Monroe she was employed by Hoffman's hat Store and as a nurse's aide by The Lutheran Home. She was a charter member of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church, now Calvary United Methodist Church, where she also taught Sunday school and was president of its ladies aid and the Monroe and Ida Senior Citizen groups. Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Ferris E. Miller of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lamont of Columbia, two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Marguerite) White and Mrs. Gilbert (Florabell) Sortor, both of Monroe, a sister Mrs. Hazel Colton of Monroe, 14 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Memorial may be made to Calvary Church in Monroe.
