Descendants of Eliza Jane Barber and Henry Herrick Varnum

Henry Herrick1 VARNUM , born April 21,1848 in Highgate Falls, VT; deceased 26 Jul 1930 in Pine Grove Cemetary, Westborough, MA. He married on 23 Aug 1879, Lizzie Jane BARBER born Nov 25, 1864 in West Medway, MA; deceased September 8,1940 in MA, daughter of Edmund Chandler BARBER 1838-1890 and Eliza Jane FULLER 1843-1889

Henry was a shoemaker. The Highgate, Vt vital records seem to have been destroyed in a fire or flood for the time of his birth so there is little information on his family ties.

Henry later resided Westborough, MA. Henry's parents were Emily Leonard and Gabriel Varnum. According to Emily's obituary in 1909, she was born in 1829 in Canada and the widow of Gabriel.

An Emily W. Varnum was living in Westboro Town, Worcester Co., Ma. (ED 1702, pg. 17) in 1900. She was born in Feb. 1829, in Canada. Living with her was a daughter, Laura J., born Feb. 1851 in Vermont, and a son, John W., born Sept 1864, in Rhode Island. Family tradition ties Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada to Gabriel's roots, but we have found no records of Gabriel yet.

A researcher tells me that Gabriel could have been Hungarian, but I have not been able to confirm the references that this researcher gave and it seems odd that no hint of Hungarian ancestry was handed down: " Josef Varnyu Varnym and his wife Rosalia Moga are listed as the parents of Gabrol Pal Varnym, who was christened 12/30/1824 in Obesce parish, Bacs Bodrog Megye, Hungary (CTI database of extracted Catholic church records on FHC microfilm batch 2360861, source number 1553928) and it is likely that he is Gabrol Pal Varnym who immigrated to Canada at age 20 in 1845 (European Immigrants to Canada 1800-1850, Royal Canadian Genealogical Society), who's name became Gabriel Paul Varnum and later moved to Vermont with his Canadian wife Emily Leonard and had Henry Herrick Varnum on 4/21/1848".

Henry was 16 years older than Lizzie when they married, which means that he was into his thirties. He was probably too young to have been involved in the Civil War in any way. I found references to George G. and Paul Varnum marriages in the Westborough area for Massachusetts marriages in the 1881-1885 timeframe. My aunt Lorraine mentioned a Paul Varnum in relation the "Varnum triplets", so I also wonder if Paul and/or George were Henry's siblings:

Massachusetts Varnum marriages 1876-1880 - ...Clarence Sumner Varnum, Essex (277,184)...Mabel L. Varnum, Lowell (314,128)

Massachusetts Varnum marriages 1881-1885 - Abbie M. Varnum, Lowell (326,140), Adelaide E. Varnum, Malden (362,161), Adelaide Varnum, Everett (362,100), Adelbert C. Varnum, Lawrence (343,280), Charles W. Varnum, Lowell (344,130), George B. Varnum, Sharon (335,318), George E. Varnum, Lowell (344,130), George G. Varnum, Southborough (336,337), George G. Varnum, Westborough (336,367), John L. Varnum, Gloucester (352,220), John Leonard Varnum, Essex (352,207), Mary Addie Varnum, Essex (334,212), Mary Addie Varnum, Beverly (334,212), Paul Varnum, Westborough (327,397), Paul Varnum, Worcester (327,397), Theresa Varnum, Lynn (361,294),

Massachusets Varnum marriages 1886-1890 - Annie L. Varnum, Everett (380,111), George E. Varnum, Everett (398,110), John C. Varnum, Boston (390,141), Milo Varnum, Lowell (380,135), Nannie K. Varnum, Eastham (406,10), Sadie A. Varnum, Lynn (370,302), Susie Varnum, Lowell (380,145)

Henry evidently used some French phrases in his speech, which may have come from growing up near the Canadian border in Vermont. But a check of the VT census for 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860, as well as the MA census for 1860 shows no Gabriel or Henry H Varnum.

This photo was probably annotated by Mabel Varnum or her daughter Jane

Abt 1908 a family photo was taken with a total of 9 children

Notes for Lizzie Jane Barber:

Lizzie was descended from many, many Massachusetts families from the 1600s, including Francis Cooke of the Mayflower at http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/cmaddox1/d8.htm#P1, as well as Edith Squire and Henry Adams, who were great grandparents to President John Adams and great grandparents to John Quincy Adams. Edith's sisters are ancestors of President's Taft and Fillmore. So that makes us very distant cousins to these Presidents through Lizzie's great grandmother Abigail's, who's 5th great grandparents were Edith Squires and Henry Adams. Abigail's grandparent's Obadiah and Christiana Sanford Adams are linked back to Henry and Edith Adams at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jwmuse/jwmall/d0000/g0000095.html#I6143 . There is an Adams genforum at http://www.genforum.com/adams and some of Henry and Edith's lineage starting at http://www.riggenbach.org/html/d0000/g0000337.html#I08804 , http://www.northrim.net/humphri/d0008/g0000059.html#I15040

Edmund Chandler10 BARBER (Miranda9 Cushing, Abigail8 Adams, Jesse7, Obadiah6, John5, Edward4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), born 1838 in Townsend, VT; deceased 1890 in West Medway, MA. He married on 29 Jan 1859, Eliza Jane FULLER , born 1843 in Medway, MA; deceased 19 Nov 1889 in West Medway, MA, daughter of Stephen Barton and Mary Ann (Christian) Fuller

Lizzie Barber was a cousin to Dorothea Thompson who was married to Doc Thompson and lived in a large brick house on the corner of Hayden Rowe and Main Street in Hopkinton. The Thompson's opposed Lizzie's marriage to Henry. Evidently, the Barber family had higher expectations of some kind. Lizzie carried them out to some extent because her daughters Edith and Mabel were sent to finishing school. In later years, she was described as short and broad, while Henry was described as tall and dapper, but she also seems to have had very high expectations of family loyalty and duty, which were disturbed by a rift between her children that lasted after her death and into their old age. She raise her grandson Jack, William's son, when his mother died, but there are indications in some of the following stories that she was very empathetic and concerned about the family and others.

Then, shortly before Henry died in 1930, another family photo was taken.

Generation 2

2. Harry Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1) Married with 2 children, lived in Framingham and then Springfield, MA

3. Mabel Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1) married in Framingham, MA, Ben JOHNSON. Mabel did a lot of research on the Barber side to join the DAR, which produced 80 pages of notes that my aunt Jean Varnum Donovan showed me this winter.

Children of Mabel Varnum2 and Ben Johnson were as follows:

9 i Jane Johnson3

ii Benjamin Jr3

4. William Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1), born 14 Aug 1881; deceased Jun 1964. He married (1) aft. 1900 First WIFE. He married (2) abt. 1910, Philomena.

Children of William Varnum2 and First Wife were as follows:

i Jack Varnum3, born 16 Oct 1906; deceased Dec 1990. raised by grandmother Lizzie Barber Varnum

Children of William Varnum2 and Philomena were as follows:

i William Jr3 VARNUM

ii Arthur3 VARNUM

iii Doris3 VARNUM

iv Ruth3 VARNUM

5. Elmer Raymond Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1), born 6 Feb 1889 in Marlboro, MA; deceased Jan 1966. He married on 2 Mar 1910 in N Brookfield, MA, Lizzie May SMITH; resided: W. Brookfield, MA

Children of Elmer Raymond Varnum2 and Lizzie May Smith were as follows:

i Florence3 VARNUM

ii Carl Varnum3

iii Earl Varnum3, born 23 Apr 1913; deceased 2 Jun 1993.

10 iv Edward William Varnum3

11 v Robert Varnum3

6. Edith Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1), born 1896; deceased 1976. She divorced Elmer LEWIS , born 1893, who later in 1973 married my grandmother, Edith's brother Walter's widow, Olive Pearl Jean Varnum.

Children of Edith Varnum2 and Elmer Lewis were as follows:

i Elmer Jr3 married Eleanor. Now living in Guilford, NH and Vero Beach, FL

ii Walter Varnum Lewis3 married Dorothy WEEKS; lived in Fitzwilliam, NH; died in a nursing home in Winchester, NH November, 1997 after a siege with liver cancer.

7. Walter Sewell Varnum2 (Henry Herrick1), born 26 Jun 1901; deceased 14 Dec 1968. He married in 1919, Olive Pearl Jean, born 13 Dec 1903 in New Germany, Nova Scotia; deceased May 1973, daughter of William H and Cecelia (Lockhart Porter ) (Crandall) Jean (1861-1904)

Walter started working as an auto mechanic in high school and opened up his own shop. He wanted to be a doctor and tried to save money to do that, but got married when he was about 17.

My father's birth certificate in 1925 says that Walter was a Loom repairman. During the Depression, Walter was able to work at a number of jobs and maintained a home on the Salem End Road, Framingham that later became FDR's son's. In later years, Walter was a manager in the Roxbury Carpets factory in Saxonville, MA - shown here with Mason the General Manager:

Evidently, he took alot of correspondence courses whenever he was interested in learning about something. He also went to Northeastern University at night and received a certificate in Business and Industrial Training that Olive still had in her things after Walter's death.

Aunt Lorraine remembers that he would send her to the library with a list of books to get for him and that the librarian asked her who the books were for because she thought they were pretty heady reading. These periods of reading or study were mixed in with an entirely different personality, where he was always either working or out with his friends. Lorraine remembers that when he was home that no one knew how to behave, because they were used to him not being around. He required my grandmother to fuss over the ironing of his suits so he could make a good appearance, and yet manage the household budget for six children. Walter's family had a great rift over a yeast business in the late 1930's. Walter's older brothers Elmer and Bill had started a yeast mill. Bill was a chemist and came up with the formula that was used. Elmer later started the Quabaug Rubber business which Roger Varnum is now President ( http://www.fia.org/cgi-bin/fiadb/top.000088.html ). Elmer's son Robert and his wife Dot were very friendly with my grandparents when I was growing up, even though they were in my father's generation, and I remember them coming to visit them. Robert's son Robert's picture was in the Boston Globe in 1988 because it was announced that he became a Vice President of the Norton Company in Worcester. He was quoted in several other articles in the Globe in the late 80's and early 90s. He looked very much like my father at that age. Grampa Walt's family was "loquatious", spirited - she thinks that is reminiscent of Wales - the love of language.

Olive at about age 4

Olive in her early teens

Olive's mother died when she was three months old and she was taken in by Aunt Esther and Uncle Timothy Longley in Royalston, MA until she was in the third grade and then went to Athol, MA to live with the Etta Pike family before she met my grandfather in Westborough, MA. Year's later when she tried to get a birth certificate, she had problems in Nova Scotia apparently and had to go to the school in Royalston. Esther Longly my have been William Jean's sister. She and Timothy Longly were evidently quite comfortable, but had no children of their own. They had two "buggies", one for every day and one for church on Sundays. When Timothy died, he left some money to Olive, but for some reason, he called by a different name somehow and she did not have the resources to pursue it in court. Apparently, she was sent to Etta Pike's because the Longley's no longer felt up to taking care of a young child. I do not know if Etta was related. My father Donald went to Royalston several year's ago, trying to find some information about the Longley's and actually met a woman who went to school with my grandmother there and still lived in the house that she grew up in, probably as a neighbor of the Longleys. The Pike's in Athol were very simple farm people and since my grandmother was very resourceful and had a great deal of common sense in the Depression years raising 6 children, she may have gotten such a solid ability in her years with the Pike's. Eventually, Olive went to live with her sister Myrna in Worcester, but Olive did not feel comfortable in a city environment, so she when she was about 14, she went to see her mother's sister Bertha Stewart in Westboro. Bertha had a three story house there. Bertha was evidently was somewhat superior in attitude, and financially comfortable, but when Olive asked if she could rent a room there, Bertha said no that she didn't do that sort of thing. Lorraine remembers Bertha as being unpleasant or fussy and looking in my grandmother's closets or otherwise criticizing her. Lorraine also remebers Bertha as looking like a tall "prune" or not particularly attractive. Olive found a job in a factory and rented a room or an apartment in Westboro. She met my grandfather Walter at a church social and Lizzie Varnum befriended Olive, so that Olive met the rest of the family and married Walter. Walter and Olive lived with Lizzie through the births of their first two children, Walter Raymond and Jean Elizabeth, and then they moved to Framingham, probably an apartment on Rt 9 or Worcester Road. From the Worcester Road apartment, they moved to Summer Street and then to Hastings Street, where they bought a house. The Hasting's Street house was lost to the bank during the Depression. They then rented a house from a Mrs. Dunbar on Salem End Road. There Walter, during the Depression, worked for Mrs. Dunbar in the stables, picking apples and so on. Lorraine believes that he was able to work 4 days a week this way during the Depression. Eventually, Walter went to work for Roxbury Carpets in the Saxonville area of Framingham and that is where I remember him working when I was a child. From Salem End Road, they moved to Summer Street in Framingham and then Proctor Street in Hopkinton, a dirt road at the bottom Ben Pond Hill. Then they rented a house on Pleasant Street from Mrs. Madagan that they wanted to buy, but Mrs. Madagan wouldn't sell it to them because they weren't Catholic. Finally, they bought a house on Grove Street. This is the house that I remember when I was a young child. Then they moved to Newton Street in Southboro some time before my aunt Marilyn's marriage. This is the house where we had annual family cookouts in the summer and that my parents bought from my grandparents shortly before Walter died.

16. Lorraine Crandall Varnum3 (Walter Sewell Varnum2, Henry Herrick1), born 18 Nov 1928. She married Fred Eldridge HUNT

Lorraine was a toddler when Henry Varnum died and somehow got burned on the house radiators when she was left with a babysitter during the time of Henry's funeral. Although she doesn't remember the actual incident she still has the scars from the second and third degree burns she received. Lorraine remembers going to the stables and the orchards with her father and also to tea with her mother at Mrs. Dunbar's house. She also remembers that Mrs. Dunbar got a kick out of Lorraine being able to stand on her head, so Lorraine said it got to be a humorous custom when they went to tea. A Mrs. Gildatt in the neighborhood had a station wagon and used drive the kids back and forth to school. One day when Lorraine was riding with her, Mrs. Gildatt got upset with her and told her that she would make her get out and walk. Lorraine got upset and got out of the car, and then Mrs. Gildatt told her to get back in. Lorraine said no and decided to walk, and Mrs. Gildatt continued to follow her in the car, apparently worried about the whole situation. Eventually, Mrs. Dunbar sold her house to President Roosevelt's son and the estate had walls built around it and Secret Service installed. Lorraine was very upset that she couldn't see Mrs. Dunbar's house anymore and one day climbed up on the wall to see it. A man asked her what she was doing and she told him not only that she wanted to see Mrs. Dunbar's house, but that her father was complaining that the Democrats were wasting taxpayer's money building the wall. The man seemed to find her explanation humorous, but helped her get down off the wall and asked her not to climb the wall again. She told him that she wouldn't now that she finally had a chance to see Mrs. Dunbar's house again. Now, she realizes that it must have been with the Secret Service. Because Salem End Road was a very elite neighborhood, Lorraine also remembers that other people thought she had grown up in a mansion, but she remembers that house as being very unpretentious, and even seeing ice in the hall one winter morning when she came downstairs. My father remembers some incident where he thought that someone tried to get him to go in a car with them and said that they might have been thinking that he was from a wealthy family from that neighborhood and that it might have been a kidnap attempt. but this was during the time of the Lindbergh kidnapping, so people were prone to such fears.
