I am glad I found your web site at least I will know where the name Varnum originates. The only information I have about my greatgrandmother Nettie Varnum is that she married William B.Adams and had seven sons, John T.,Vick,James A.,William Mills,Joe Varnu
,Robert and Elihue H. Adams. I have just started my search and I really don't know where to start since I don't know her place of birth or death. The birth date would probably be in the 1830's.It will take a while to read all of your information so I will
be visiting often.

I'm trying to find the parents of my Lois. Here's a bio for background:
LAMB Family of New Albion
Bio from:
Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus Co. NY,
pub 1893
History of the Town of New Albion – Chapter XXXVIII (38)
Page 842
Jehiel LAMB, son of David, was born in Vermont, March 3, 1787, married
Lois VARNUM, Jan. 1, 1810, who was born Jan. 2, 1789, and settled in
Warrensburg, N. Y. In 1829 they came to Otto with two yoke of oxen
and a heavy wagon followed by their single cow, making the journey in
twenty-one days. They settled in "North Otto." He was a member of
the Methodist Episcopal church and was class-leader and superintendent
of the Sunday school. About 1836 he sold his improvements and removed
to Mansfield, where he died Jan. 30, 1870. Mrs. LAMB died Jan. 12,
1856. They had nine children. Their youngest son, Bolivar R. LAMB,
was born July 6, 1830 and has always been a farmer. Oct. 17, 1853, he
married Mary E. BARNARD, of New Albion, and purchased the homestead of
Warren BARNARD, his wife's father, where she was born Feb. 20, 1834,
and where they still reside. He is in sympathy with the Methodists
and a worker in the Sunday school. He served as supervisor in 1866
and 1871. He has one daughter, Effie M., born June 6, 1865, the wife
of Rev. W. W. MANNING.
Perhaps her father or mother are one of these lised in the census index:
1860,Varnum........Elizabeth Varnum , Michael Varnum, Farmersville
#001
Cattaraugus, NY
John Varnum, Franklinville #597 Cattaraugus, NY
Martha Varnum, #622 Franklinville, Cattaraugus, NY
Can anyone help me find Lois' parents?

Hello,
I've recently found three very old pedigree charts that belonged to my Great Grandmothers' Great-Grandmother... have been amazed to find that so much of what is on these old charts is so incredibly verifiable via the internet! She would have loved to have
seen this! Two of the charts deal with descendants of Geo. and Hannah Varnum.
The most recent entry on one is Elizabeth Charlotte Lindsay *Aug 1, 1825-1896, who married Jas. Fenn. She was the grand daughter of David Lindsay Sr. Born (according to what I have in 1756 in Dracut Mass. Died May 10, 1804 in Peacham Vt.)... he was marr
ed to Mary Varnum in January of 1784.. The other one has the most recent entry being David Lindsay Jr. who was one of the sons of Captain David Lindsay. One says that Captain David Lindsay, Born Mar 30, 1756 Dracut, Mass Died May 10, 1804 Peacham Vt. Rev
War Record Mass Rev Rolls Vol 10;829 (hard to read...) Pvt. Captain Coburns Co. May 1, 1775 - Aug 1, 1775 Cpt & Sgt. Captain James Varnums Co. March 15,1777 to Dec 31, 1779 Col. Michael Jackson's Regt. Continental Army ...(this last line is in
different ink/ doesn't even appear to be the same writing... so I don't know how long after the fact it was added). It lists Mary Varnum Born May 6, 1755 * (hard to read) Dracut Mass, Died Peacham Vt. Married Jan 24, 1784 Dracut Mass. Children : Daniel
. 1785 Martha 1787 Mary 1789
David 1791 James M (or W) 1793 Joseph B. 1796
All born in Thornton but James- who I can't make out, and Joseph B. who was born in Danville. Vt. Its so amazing to me that all of this is available here... If anyone is
looking for any of this information I would be happy to share it with them... Both of the "Lindsay-Varnum" charts have nice notes on the Lindsay war service..
Thank you!
Zoe Boughton

I read in a dictionary of etymology that Farn is Old Saxon and Old High German for fern, and Vaern (with v pronuced as f) is Middle Dutch for fern. Add the -um, -ham, and -am endings and you get our related names, which mean from the ferns. An english f
iend tells me the ferns are in the north of England.

To Charles C Doble who asked about Sarah.
You think you have problems with Rebecca's Shead's death date, try finding out about who her other children were in addition to Lucy and Sarah. First things first: Ref A & B both state Rebecca was still living in 1760 and 1774 - which reference indicated
she died in 1743 ?
In addition to Rebecca, Abraham Varnum had 2 other wives, kkAbvigail and Rachel. Ref A shows our line of Benjamin being the son of Rachel, Born Mar 1748, died 181o. Ref B shows him born Mar 1747-8 and died a early youth. Seeing Rachel died in Mar 1746
we have a problem. Later investigations shows Benjamin was Rebeccas son (Ref c). Also to other of Rachels sons, William and Abion, were born after her death. Were they Rebeca,s ? We should check this out, we may have more family lines than we think.

You've done an excellent job in assembling material on Varnums. As a board certified genealogist who has spent the past 10-years researching the NE Descendants of Ralph Farnum, I had to download those newspaper pages of the Maine Varnums in Surry, Buckspo
t, etc. These are descendants of Ralph, and not Samuel Varnum, but in addition there are descendants of a later generation (also Ralph), who got spelled Varnum in Bowdoin VRs. The mis-spelling has been a thorn in my side, and made my research more diffi
ult. In fact, my soon to be published 2-vol book on Ralph will pointedly state those Bucksport/Castine/Surry families have been spelling the name wrong all these past 150 years! I am always impressed with researchers who have done their homework, as you
have! An excellent job, with factual, documented matter. I'm impressed.

I'm living in the place where the Varnums moved to after they left Ipswich in 1659. We are the George, Samuel, Thomas line. My nephew is Thomas Varnum VIII . This bunch, until the present generations, is best known for not straying far from the farm.

Earliest Varnum Ancestor: Daniel H. Varnum (father) |

I am trying to locate Daniel H. Varnum, because he is my natural father. I have never met him.
I know my father spent time in Hawaii during World War II, was married (but not to my mother) when I was born, and was probably a carpenter. I believe he was Catholic and had at least one other daughter. I think that the "H" in his name stands for Heste
, but I am not sure.
I was born March 18, 1946, in Mobile, Alabama, at the U.S. Naval Hospital. However, when my adoptive father, Harold Lloyd, adopted me the birth records were changed to reflect him as my father.
My mother met Daniel Varnum in Hawaii. My mother has told me he worked in the wood shop there for the navy. She worked for Remington Arms, making bullets. I was conceived in Hawaii just prior to the end of the war. When the war was over, my mother fol
owed Daniel to Pensacola, Florida, hoping to get married. Daniel had a family there and he told my mother that his wife was Catholic and refused to give him a divorce.
When I was born my mother was admitted to the Naval Hospital under Daniel's name. Apparently Daniel and his wife offered to take me after I
was born and raise me as their child, however, my mother said no.
My mother returned to Utah in 1948 (she was born there in 1916) and has lived there ever since. Daniel traveled to Utah once in the late 1940s
or early 1950s to see my mother and me, but my mother was now married. (She and my adoptive father will celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary this September). I don't think my mother ever saw or spoke with Daniel again. My name, Waldan, is my mother's creation. It's the
combination of her father's name, Walter, and my father's name, Daniel.
I have tried Social Security before without much success. I have not been able to come up with a definite Social Security number for Daniel, which I am told would certainly make searching easier. Military records, those that are accessible, are a mess,
rom what I can tell.
I was able to locate a Daniel H. Varnum, about age 80, living near Sacramento, California. He had lived and obtained a social security number in Florida, but he claimed not to be able to help me. I am not convinced that he is not my father, however, I d
not want to contact him again unless I feel sure I have eliminated all other possibilities. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

This site has been in operation for one year as a "one name study".
The George and Hannah Varnham root family is the best documented from the 1600s in MA. A large amount of new information on the
Ralph Farnham descendants in Maine and North Carolina ties many Varnam and Varnum families to Ralph rather than George. However, I have not sorted this information and entered it into a gedcom, yet. RAlph Farnham's 1600's Essex County, MA family is well d
cumented through many sources.
Enoch Varnum's family is well documented from the late 1700s in PA, but it is not known whether there is any tie between Enoch and either George or Ralph.
