Do Dogs Dream?
According to Dr. Randy Lockwood, a behavior specialist for the American
Humane Society, dogs DO dream. This has been confirmed in the laboratory as
measured by brain wave activity.
Ever notice that when your dog is taking a nap, his/her paws are twitching and
moving? If you haven't, pay close attention the next time your four-legged
friend takes a nap. This sleep like running motion, seems to show us that a canine's
dream often involves some kind of activity.
What Do Dogs Dream About?
Dr. Van de Castle from the University of Virginia Medical School Sleep and Dream
Laboratory, believed that dogs review things that have happened during the day
and relieve some exciting experience. The paw and tail twitching, and growling,
showed that they are reviewing something that had happened during the day.
Just out of curiosity, we (Kev and I) conducted several tests on Miko.
Whenever we took her outside, whether it's for potty business or playtime,
we observe her every move and sound that she made. When she naps, we observe
her sleeping motions. True enough, she twitched her paws, tail, whine, bark and
even growl. Then we began to compare the actions that happened during the time
outside with the ones she made during her naps. We are surprised to find that
the two actions are not very far apart, in fact most of the time, they are similar.
For example, two weeks ago, after coming back from a walk, as I was opening
the door, she spotted the ducks (belonging to our apartment complex)
in the pond right across from our apartment, and took off to chase them before I
could stop her or grab her. She ran around the pond, and daringly stepped down
to the frozen pond (except for the patch where the ducks are swimming). Then she
began running around that circle, barking excitedly at the same time. There is
nothing I can do except to stand and watch, as my yelling out any commands will
do no good, for she has reached, what I call the "no heed" point due to her over-
excitement. Plus the thin layer of ice will not hold my weight.
Then, all of a sudden, her foot slipped and she plunged into the icy cold water.
She yelped and whined from the shock and manage to get out. I yelled out for
her to come. She came trotting over with her ears dropped back and
tail tugged between her legs. She knows she's in big trouble. I held her tightly
by the jaw (she hates that) and
stared squared into her eyes and began to reprimand her, she whined.
Later that day when she took her nap, I noticed that she is sleep running
(the term I use when their paws is twitching), and choke bark (a suppressed bark)
then followed by a muffled yelp and whining.
Coincidence? Maybe, but I do believe she is reviewing the pond incident.
Try this little experiment, and see for yourself. If you are
patient enough to wait and observe, somewhere in the many dog naps, you might
discover what your little furry friend is dreaming about!
