My grandfather, George Lawrence Cummings, worked as an oiler on the Great Lakes in the 1920s, when he was in his 'teens and early twenties. His ship was the SS Samuel FB Morse. He took a camera with him to record what he saw. Unfortunately, he did not identify the people or the sitee on the photographs before he passed away in 1986. Below are some of the candid photos he took of his shipmates, other ships, and some landmarks.
George Lawrence Cummings
SS Samuel FB Morse
I have larger sized, mounted ship's portraits of the next two vessels and believe that they have significance - either my grandfather or one of his uncles may have worked on them.
SS Corona
SS Frank D Rockefeller (a whaleback steamer)
The two photos below show my great-great-uncle, Joseph William "JW" or "Will" Derosia when he was sailing on the lakes.
He is on the far left at the captain's table, and is the man in the center in the engine room. Vessel unknown.
