One night during Christmas, I was at my bestfriend, Nancy
Rose's house and her parents were gone. We were watching TV
when we heard a noise outside. We didn't know what it was. I think I
was 9 and she was 11. We thought it was some drunken mummers,
so the first thing she does, is go to the kitchen and get a
knife, when the porch door opened, it was just her Uncle Lorne.
I think he got quite the fright.

Several years ago when I was dating, Betty, now my wife, I decided
to drop in on my grandparents, Billie Joe and Gen Crant in Kline
Height's (Halifax) on Christmas Eve. Of course "Nanna" had a pot of fish boiling on the stove and there were several former residents of Ramea (John
and Marj. Critchell, John and Florence Payne, John Chaffey and a
few more that slip my memory). My wife and I took a seat near the
entrance to the living room, and we were all joking, and having a
great time. I didn't notice but my wife was being awful quite. When
all of a sudden a knock came to the door and "Nanna" asked my wife
who it was, as if she had been family all along. Without hesitation
she exclaimed, "Oh, I don't know it's got to be another
Newfoundlander!!". It was only then I realized she hadn't
understood a word anyone was saying, I guess you could cut the
Newfie accent with a knife!

"Christmas Memories"
As a child growing, up in Ramea, one of my favourite memories are--
On Christmas Eve my best friend. Susie MacDonald and I, along with
other children from the neighbourhood, used to visit the 'Four Winds'.
The home of the late Marie Penny. Mrs. Penny used to sing us Christmas
Carols while she played the organ. Following this she would read us
Christmas stories, while we were served candy and other goodies. As the
fireplace burned in the background along with the warm hospitality,
and the feeling of Christmas, I remember feeling so happy, and so
filled with the joys of Christmas, that to this day, on every
Christmas Eve I think fondly of Mrs Penny and I will always remember,
that she was the one person who made me believe that there actually
was a" Santa Clause"

"One of my Christmas Memories."
I remember going from house to house to look at Christmas trees. My
friend Elsie and I went to every house and when we were there we
would tell the people "what a beautiful tree you have". Then they
would give us a little treat either candy, cake or cookies. I think
it was the treats not the tree we were there for. By the time we
got home we would want no supper that evening.

One of my favorite memories of Christmas is going home to
Winterton (Trinity Bay) to my grandparent's house. When
I was younger and my grandparents were still in good health,
my parents and I would fly down (we lived in Montreal) for
Christmas and spend it with them. My mother and my grandmother
would be cooking like there was no tomorrow, and I'd be sitting
in my little rocking chair by the fire talking with my grandpa
staring at the tree and playing outside in the woods.
I haven't been home in years, and I really do miss being in
that home.
