Langley Ward? |
hat is the Langley Ward? Two explanations are needed: One for members
of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and another for non-members.
First, for Church members, the Langley Ward is a young singles ward located near Washington DC in the city of Mclean, Virginia. Langley ward is part of the Mclean Stake but is also the ward for single members living in the Oakton and Centreville Stakes. In terms of cities the Langley Ward includes Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax, Mclean, Great Falls, Oakton, and others. The ward boast over two hundred active members ranging in age from eighteen to mid-thirties with most members in their early twenties. Members of the ward include students, interns, and professionals. A large number of the students attend George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Most of the interns come from Brigham Young University. As is common in Northern Virginia, many of the working members of Langley Ward work in government or for government contractors. A large share of Langley ward members have moved to Northern Virginia from Utah, but there are members from many states and even a few different countries. Ward members enjoy many social activities each week in addition to the regular Sunday meetings. Every Monday night the ward holds Family Home Evening together, Institute of Religion classes are offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, dances are held twice a month on Friday nights, once a month there is a ward social, and most Saturday nights one or more members hosts a party. The second answer to the question "What is the Langley Ward?" is intended for those who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. |
A "ward" is a congregation
of Church members who reside in a particular geographical area and attend
church meetings and activities at an assigned building and time.
Members
outside the area fall within another ward (congregation) and perhaps attend
Church at a different building. Several wards comprise a stake. Each ward
and stake has a name particular to its geographical area. For example Langley
Ward includes a part of Northern Virginia called " Langley" (the same "Langley"
associated with the CIA). In an effort to help young single members of
the Church meet, stakes often include "singles" wards where unmarried members
of the stake can attend Church meetings and
activities
together.
Langley Ward is organized into several committees that organize, plan, and run various activities. The following committees and their various sub-committees are explained in this web site: Perfecting the Saints, Redeeming the Dead, Proclaiming the Gospel, Sunday School, Elders Quorum, and Relief Society. It is important to note that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no paid ministry, members freely give of there time and talents in an effort to serve others (member or non-member). Typically, every member of any ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is given an opportunity to serve by accepting a calling (set of responsibilities). Even the Bishop and his counselors who together oversee the entire ward and its activities do so voluntarily and without financial compensation. Anyone interested in visiting the Langley Ward is welcome. Location and contact information can be found from the home page. Please return to the home page to learn the details of Langley ward. |
