Q&A with Lucy and Effy

Humans always have so many questions about us! To help ease their frittered minds, this page is devoted to answering those questions!

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, what can you tell us about the Siamese breed?
A: The Siamese is definitely an above-average, intelligent, wonderful breed. (We're part Siamese, you know). It is true that someone once described Siamese as "noisy, demanding and neurotic." But we've also been described as intelligent, extremely loyal, vocal, and beautiful animals. The first pair of Siamese cats in America actually came from Bangkok!

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, why does my cat drink stale water, drink flower water, drink out of the toilet bowl... anything but out of his own water bowl?
A: Personally, we like to drink out of the toilet because the water is usually cool. Same thing with running water. Plus, running water is fun to play with! Flower water is often tasty. We generally ignore water placed next to our food bowls because we don't associate thirst with eating. And then we forget the bowls are there...We've trained our slave to place water bowls all over the house, which she replaces with fresh water daily, and we tend to drink out of those. But we still like to drink out of the toilet on occasion, and really love it when she turns on the tap for us to drink from.

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, why does it seem like my cat is always sleeping?
A: If you could nap as much as you wanted without feelings of guilt, wouldn't you? Actually, cats nap a lot to save their energy for those quick attacks or quick escapes they know they'll be making at any time! We happen to be young and silly right now, so we don't sleep much at all. Older cats, though, know better, and will sleep up to 18 hours a day!

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, why is it that we occassionally hear about a mother cat leaving a young one behind?
A: Terrors! We hope that you humans take notice and rescue any young ones that inadvertantly get left behind! When this happens, its never because mom doesn't care. It's usually because she feels she has to make a quick getaway, and begins moving the little ones, one at a time, to another nesting area. She keeps coming back to the old nesting area until there are no kitties left. If the last little one wanders off while mom is in transit, and mom comes back to an empty nest, she figures she's got 'em all. Cats can't count, you know.

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, is it true that you can tell the temperature from a cat's sleeping position?
A: Well, you can guess ... we tend to stretch out when we're warm, and start curling up for warmth when its cold. The tigher we're curled up, the colder it is! And you had to ask us that?

Q: Oh wise and royal kitties, why do my cats like to get into drawers and little tiny hiding places?
A: Being predators, we know how predators think! We look out in the open for movement. To protect ourselves from predators, we like to slink along walls and find little tiny hiding places where we feel safe, secure and comfy.
