The Animal Management Division (AMD) enforces the County's
Animal Control Ordinance, and Federal and State Laws related to
animals. AMD issues pet licenses and investigates citizen
complaints regarding animal-related concerns. Through community
outreach, AMD promotes animal population control, the proper care
of household pets, and the safe and humane treatment of animals.
Effective February 2, 1998, the following changes to the
Prince George's County Animal Control Ordinance become effective
with the passage of CB-109-1997.
- The cost of a pet license for an unaltered
dogs/cats/ferrets is $25.
- Ferrets will require a pet license and rabies
vaccination.
- An animal Hobby Permit will be required when five or more
ferrets are kept in a home.
- Impounded animals may be redeemed for $15 for the first
violation if they have been spayed or neutered and $60 if
the animal has not been spayed or neutered. The fee for
subsequent impoundments for any animal in a 12 month
period will be $75.
- Reinspection fees for animal holding facilities have been
added. When the initial inspection fails, the first
reinspection is $10 and $25 for subsequent inspections.
- Rabies exposures now include scratching or other contact
with a person in addition to an animal bite. The Health
Officer must give written approval to remove an animal
that has been involved in a rabies exposure from Prince
George's County during the ten day quarantine. An owner
must pay an examination fee of $10 when a home visit by
an Animal Control Officer is conducted to release an
animal from quarantine. No quarantine release is charged
by the County for animals taken to a veterinarian or to
the Animal Control Facility for examination.
- The restraint period for a ferret, dog, cat, cow, horse,
sheep, or goat exposed to rabies will be reduced from 90
days to 45 days if the owner or custodian can provide
proof of a current valid rabies vaccination. If proof
cannot be provided, the animal shall either be euthanized
or immediately surrendered to the Animal Management
Division. Animal Management will hold the animal for up
to 30 days while quarantine arrangements are made.
