The Trezise Family of St Just in Penwith, Cornwall

My great, great, great, grandmother, Elizabeth Trezise, has been the subject of great interest by many researchers who are not related to her.

One of the problems seems to be that she was listed as aged 30 (the ages are rounded down to the nearest 5 year period) on the 1841 census living at Carnyorth. All other references to her age, that I have, being the 1851 census, the shipping record to South Australia and her death certificate give her as being born in 1817.

Elizabeth married Christopher Rodda on the 16th of August 1836. This is before Civil Registration began in England so the marriage does not list her father's name. She was pregnant with her first son William at the time of her marriage. William later became known William Trezise Rodda but was Christened as William. At one stage I wondered if Elizabeth was the daughter of William Trezise and Christiana and was Christened in 1820. However, she had six girls and four boys and one daughter was named Jane which isn't a Rodda name and none were named Christiana. I thought that William might be named after a brother and Jane might be her mother's name so set out to prove this if I could.

The most likely Christening for Elizabeth was the one on the 7th of July 1817 to Henry and Jenefer. A check of the St Just in Penwith records for this Christening listed Henry as a miner of Callinack. In 1821 Henry Trezise, miner of Kelinack and Jane Christened Grace and in 1813 a William was Christened to Henry miner of Kelinack and Jane. This proved that Jane and Jenefer were the same person and that there was a brother William. William died in March 1837 and I think William Trezise Rodda was named by Elizabeth after her brother William.

Another possible contender was the Elizabeth Christened to James Trezise and Elizabeth Nankerves in 1818 - James was listed as of Trewellard. (They had an Elizabeth Christened in January 1816 who was buried on the 4th of January 1816 aged one month.) A check of the St Just in Penwith marriage records and 1841 census revealed that this Elizabeth married W.G. Williams on the 2nd of November 1840. Her father is listed as James a miner and she is listed as aged 22 of Trewellard.

Given that Elizabeth was living at Carnyorth in 1841 just up the road from James Trezise farmer and his wife Grace who also had a daughter Elizabeth Christened in 1819 I also traced this Elizabeth and she married John Eddy on the 24th of October 1839.

Just for the record the Elizabeth Christened in 1820 (daughter of William and Christiana) mentioned above married Henry Guy in 1839.

Henry most likely died in 1833 and Jane/Jenefer after the 1851 census. In 1841 their son Noah and his family lived at Kelynack and Loveday wife of their son Henry was living not far away from Noah.

Henry Trezise married Jane Wallis on the 20th of July 1794. He is listed as a Widower. A check of the signatures of the Henry Trezise who married Ann Blight on the 5th of May 1792 and my Henry matches. His first wife Ann was buried on the 27th of January 1793. (A daughter Ann was Christened on the same day.)

Apart from the three listed above Henry and Jane/Jenne(i)fer had the following children:

Henry c. 1.11.1795

Augustus b. 1796? c. 7.4.1803

Jennifer (Jane) 1.7.1799

John (born 1802) 28.9.1806

Thomas 20.7.1804

Mary 28.9.1806

Noay 25.11.1808

James 19.6.1811

(Augustus and James were also listed to Jenefer).

As there is no age available for Henry it is impossible to say if he is the Henry Christened to John and Mary 17 December 1768 or the one to *James (deceased) and Ann 6.11.1770. (*James was buried 28 March 1770 aged 45 years.)

Looking at the order of the children and the fact that Augustus/Augustine is a very rare given name it is most likely John and Mary. However, Jane Wallis seems to have been Christened 30.10.1774 to John Wallis and Jane Williams (married 10.12.1773). They also had a Noy 30.10.1786 which suggests that Jane named some of her children after her family.

While I don't know exactly which way I descend from the Trezise family of St Just in Penwith all the Trezises certainly seem to come from the same family line.

The St Just in Penwith burials list Henry buried on the 3rd of March 1825 aged 63 and Henry buried on the 13th of July 1833 aged 65.
