(*)NOTE: The green sett was developed by the Clan Society in 1909. Due to the loss of the Morrison original tartan around the 1700's , the Society selected a MacKay sett and added a red stripe. The reasoning behind this was undoubtedly centerd around the Morrison settlement in MacKay territory by Ay Mac Hormaid (Morrison). He fell in love with the daughter of the Bishop of Caithness and subsequently married her. Her dowry was the whole of Durness on the mainland, and he relocated 60 Morrison families there in the 1600's.

CLAN BADGE

Driftwood (Sgoid Cladach)

SLOGAN / WAR CRY

Dun Uisdean (Hugh's Castle) Teaglach Phabbay (Family of Pabbay)

Dun Eystein (northern tip of Lewis). The Brieve lived in a house (Tigh Mor) near Habost in Ness.

CLANSMAN'S CREST BADGE

The CLAN MEMBER'S CREST BADGE consists of the chief's crest within a strap and buckle bearing the chief's motto. By wearing it, the clan member acknowledges himself to be a follower of the owner of the crest. The crest is a part of Dr. Iain Morrison's heraldic achievement. The motto above the crest, (TEAGHLACH PHABBAY) and the slogan above the crest, (DUN EISTEIN) encompasses both the Harris and Lewis branches of the family. Dr. Iain Morrison traces his specific lineage to Phabbay, which explains why Teaghlach Phabbay, (The Family of Phabbay) is his personal motto.

THE SENESCHAL
What is it and what is the purpose of the Seneschal?

The Clan Morrison Society of North America wants to differentiate itself from other societies by employing distinctive titles for the front line personnel. The mundane titles (commissioner, representative, state/provincial convenor, director, etc.) commonly employed by other clans lack historical/traditional appeal. In the great medieval households of bygone days the Steward / Seneschal was in charge of the castle, estate or home.

Over time, as a lord's power grew, his servant's duties also expanded in scope. The office that ultimately gained the most power was that of the Seneschal(or steward). By the 12th century the steward was in charge of the daily operation of the lord's estate as well as his household. In the 13th century it was not uncommon to find two seneschals - one who oversaw the household and one who managed the estate. As the position grew in stature it was most often filed by knights. Seneschals were knowledgeable about the law, headed the lord's advisory group, supervised lesser officials, directed to collection of rents and maintained the account books. In fact they were skilled and prudent governors managing vast lands, rights and people. It was the Seneschal's duty to safeguard his lords property, inprove productivity, defend his rights and guard his franchises.

In the CMSNA there are Seneschals in charge of designated groups of states, provinces and areas across the USA and Canada. Our Foundation Level Seneschals answer to Advanced Level Seneschal or (Regional Seneschal) who in turn answer to the High Seneschal. The High Seneschal conveys information to the Chairman of the society.

In the map below you will see the designated states and areas and a list of the Seneschal assigned to these areas. If you need information about the CMSNA or highland games where the Morrisons will be putting up clan tents, you should try and contact a Seneschal in your area.
