The following is the very first and the most complete compilation of genealogy information regarding the Masonhall surname in the United States. Other sources are available for more in-depth data on those in Europe with the surname Mesenholl.
---In 1833, when Henry was 70, they decided to migrate to America and left their homeplace near Osthofen, crossed the Rhine River and journeyed to Darmstadt where he was issued a passport for traveling abroad on April 19, 1833. They eventually arrived in Bremen, a seaport in northern Germany and left for Baltimore, Maryland in June of that year.
---They later moved to
---In early census records, depending upon other things, the spelling abilities of census takers, the surname is spelled a variety of ways including Mesenhall, Masonhole, Masenholts, Masonhold and Mesenholl. The apparent change from Meisenhohl/Meisenholtz to Mesenholl is still under study. Currently, there are approximately 100 persons in Germany with the surname Mesenholl, possibly descendants of those relatives who did not make the journey to America. By the 1860's, the final anglicization of the name was completed to MASONHALL.
---Information has not yet been found regarding the deaths of either Henry or Anna; however, his impending mortality may have been the catalyst for Henry to write his Last Will and Testament on February 13, 1850 at the age of 87. Since Anna was not mentioned in the will, it is assumed that she died sometime between 1833 and 1850, probably in the seven years between their arrival and 1840, since she did not appear in the census that year with Henry.
---John William Mesenholl (b. 8-13-1797 in Prussia (Germany); d. 9-20-1872 near Mirabile, Caldwell County, Missouri) and his wife, Charlotte Grieger/Kruger (b. circa 1817; d. 1850's in New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio) were two of my 16 great-great grandparents and the progenitors of the clan of Masonhalls that eventually settled primarily in Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma. Their marriage certificate states they were wed on February 1, 1842. They had three children named Anna Margaret "Maggie" (b. 3-30-1847 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; d. 9-8-1901 in Douds, Van Buren County, Iowa---Buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Village Township, Van Buren County, Iowa), George Henry (b. 3-30-1849 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; d. 1-26-1934 in Homestead, Blaine County, Oklahoma) and Samuel "Sam" W. (b. 8-26-1851 in Ohio; d. early 1900's near Arapahoe County, Colorado).
---In the 1850's, the family had moved to New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio in the eastern part of the state just across the border from Pennsylvania. During this time, Charlotte died and William was left with three young children to raise. The family apparently left Ohio in the years surrounding the Civil War, moving through Indiana and Illinois before finally settling in Missouri. In 1870, the widowed father, 72, daughter Maggie, 23 and sons Samuel, 18, George, 21, and George's new bride Sarah Jane (Peckham), 19, appeared in the same household in Mirabile, near Kingston, Caldwell County, Missouri, where he died two years later. His gravesite is as yet unknown.
Spring Landscape in Caldwell County
---Knowing that our great-great-grandfather, John William Masonhall, died on September 20, 1872 in Caldwell County, Missouri just wasn't enough. Since no one has ever been able to find his actual final resting place, a couple of 3rd cousins (we both can claim William Masonhall as our great great grandfather) named Phil Metcalf and Dave Masonhall decided to venture into Caldwell County in April, 2005 to try and find his gravesite.
---I had flown back to Elkhart, Indiana from my home in Oregon to pick up a new motorhome we had ordered. Since I had 2,200 miles of solitary roadway facing me on my return west, I didn't think a little dip down into northwestern Missouri would be too far out of the way and the genealogy find might well be worth it. So I telephoned Phil who lives in Iowa and we decided to meet in Hamilton, Missouri to begin our quest.
---We had both gathered info, maps, cemetery data, census records, etc. in preparation for the search and decided the Caldwell County Historical Society headed by a very helpful and gracious lady name Diane would be our first stop. Arriving in Kingston, the county seat just 7 miles south of Hamilton, we encountered a town that time seemed to have forgotten. Many buildings looked over one hundred years old with many businesses boarded up long ago. The building housing the one-woman-run historical society was just across the street east of the aging courthouse and next to the only new building in town, the Sheriff's Office.
---Diane was incredibly helpful and provided us with even more maps, records, etc. which she graciously copied for us and for which we graciously donated from our wallets for her untiring efforts. Following lunch in a small country cafe in Polo, a few miles to the south, we headed out to Mirabile (pronounced m-a-r-r-a-b-u-l-l in the local vernacular) and the Mirabile Cemetery. Walking the grounds in grid fashion brought no sign of anyone with the Masonhall surname but there were plenty of obvious graves with no stones at all.
---Our next stop was at the Plum Creek "cemetery" northwest of Mirabile. It wasn't really a formal cemetery, just a few graves in a thicket of trees near Plum Creek which winds through the area. The current owner, his 4-year-old daughter and the family dog named Coal graciously led us through the woods until we came upon an area no more than 20' x 40' and found a few headstones laying in disarray and some cement markers flush to the ground and covered by leaves and mud. (The story was told that a few years back some teenaged vandals had invaded the area, broken some headstones and stolen some others).
---One exciting find was the headstone for little Winona Buck who only experienced seven months of life on this Earth from August 4, 1871 to March 6, 1872. She was the infant daughter of Jacob Buck and Mary (Hockenberry) Buck who owned the land at that time. 1872 was a bad year for the family as Mary Hockenberry-Buck, in addition to baby Winona, also lost her father, James, who died on July 27 of that year. And her niece's (Sarah Jane) father-in-law, William Masonhall, died on September 20 of that fateful year.
---The area was a popular place for many ancestors as various census records find William Masonhall, George Henry and Sarah Jane Peckham-Masonhall, Samuel W. Masonhall, Anna Margaret Masonhall, John C. Peckham, Isabella Hockenberry-Peckham, James Hockenberry family, Mary Hockenberry-Buck and others all located in the Mirabile, Missouri area in the years between 1870 and 1900. It was also the place where George Henry Masonhall married Sarah Jane Peckham on May 1, 1870.
---Both the Mirabile and Plum Creek cemeteries were quality candidates for William's gravesite but still no stone was to be found. After a few more hours of searching the area, we ended up just across the county line into the town of Cameron in Clinton County. In the southeastern area of town is Packard Cemetery where we found gravesites for Jacob and Mary (Hockenberry) Buck and James Hockenberry and third wife Jeals.
---So, in conclusion, we didn't find William's grave but discovered some connections to our ancestry that can only be realized by actually walking the earth where they walked. It provides an emotional bridge of sorts that lends credence to the phrase "we may not always know where we're going but finding out where we've been provides a starting point in our lives."

---(Note: The previous information is a summary of some of the information I have collected over the past 40 years I have been involved in this ongoing genealogy project. This material represents the ancestral lineage of my paternal grandfather Albert Masonhall. This next section, titled "Doane/Sample," will deal with the ancestors leading to my paternal grandmother, Addie Doan. That information will complete the ancestral tributaries leading to my paternal grandparents, Albert and Addie. In closing the section on paternal family history, I will honor that most loving and respected couple whose memories I cherish, Grandpa Albert and Grandma Addie, with a special story about their lives.
---The first meeting of the Doanes and Samples in my lineage occurred in Jefferson County, Kansas when Benjamin Grant Doan met and married Rebecca Jane Sample. Both families have rich heritage but the Doanes can lay claim to one of the Pilgrims in that long ago settlement of Plymouth, Massachusetts by the name of John Doane (b. circa 1590). He arrived in America circa 1629 on one of the ships that followed the Mayflower. John Doane's great-great-great-great grandson was Lewis Doane, Benjamin Grant Doan's grandfather.
---Lewis Doane (b. circa 1802 in Kentucky) was one of eight children of Benjamin Doane (b. 1769 in North Carolina) and Mary Burks (b. circa 1775 in Virginia). They were the progenitors of many, if not most, of the branch known as the Kentucky Doanes. Lewis married Mary Asbury, daughter of Coleman Asbury and Amy Compton, on 8-25-1830 in Pendleton County, Kentucky and they had four children named Amy, Lyrena, Richard Thomas and Mary. Richard Thomas, my great-great grandfather, was only a toddler when his Mother died and his father, Lewis, remarried to a lady named Milly Pettit in 1842.
---Richard Thomas "Dick" Doan (b. 5-24-1837 in Pendleton County, Kentucky; d. 10-5-1900 in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky) married Anna Eliza Beckett, daughter of John W. Beckett and Alice Hickman, on 9-13-1858 in Harrison County, Kentucky. They had eight children, all born in Kentucky, named:
(1) Jessie Newton Doane (b. 7-6-1859; d. 11-25-1936) married Orpha Jane Jones (d. 1-21-1931 in Kentucky) on 3-13-1881 in Harrison County, Kentucky and they had seven children named John William, Charles Beckett, Richard M., Anna Ellen, Spurgeon Elmer, Harlan Ward and Mary Frances.
(2) John McDonald Doane (b. 7-30-1861) married Lilly Mae Huger on 4-5-1896 and they had one child named Kathleen.
(3) William Henry Doane (b. 12-28-1863; d. 1-26-1899) married Minnie Rose on 9-13-1892 in Kentucky and they had a child named Richard Clay.
(4) Benjamin Grant Doan married Rebecca Jane Sample (see entry on next page), daughter of David A. Sample and Nancy Foley and granddaughter of John W. Sample and Rebecca Davis. (see Sample ancestry below)
(5) Robert Morton Doane (b. 3-8-1870; d. 2-13-1924) married Joanna Hunt (d. 7-30-1938 in Kentucky) on 4-23-1893 in Kentucky and they had twelve children named Clarence, Clara, Stella, Mayme, Walter, Flora, Wilbur, Russel, Ruth Ellen, Herbert, Everett and Stanley.
(6) Ruth Ellen Doan (b. 4-11-1873) married Roy Muntz on 1-3-1906 in Kentucky and they had one child named Roy Doan.
(7) David Lawson Doan (b. 2-18-1876; d. 3-28-1954 in Idaho) married Nettie Burgers Hunt (d. 5-1958) on 6-3-1901 in Kentucky and they had five children named Alice, Elizabeth, Carrie, Hazel and Ann Eliza.
(8) Lucy Doan (b. 11-25-1878) died in infancy.
---John W. Sample (b. 1810 in Tennessee; d. 9-18-1860 in Kansas), the son of William and Keziah Sample, married Rebecca Davis (b. circa 1804 in Blount County, Alabama) on 2-15-1825 in Blount County, Alabama. They were Rebecca Jane Sample's grandparents and they had two children named Seaborn and David A., Rebecca Jane's father.
---Following Rebecca's death, John married Lucy "Ruth" Hawk (b. 1822 in Tennessee; d. in Newton, Harvey County, Kansas) and they had nine children named Matilda A., Camelia, Susanna, James, Martha, John, Mary, Louisa and Frances.
---When David Sample was a small child, his family moved to Sarcoxie, Jasper County, Missouri near Webb City (Joplin). In 1850, at the age of 17, he moved north near Weston, in Platte County, Missouri, beside the Mississippi River. There he married one of the Foley daughters, Jane Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Foley and Mary Jane Hawkins (married on 7-17-1834 in Lincoln County, Missouri). They were originally from Crab Orchard, Kentucky.

---(Note: Without Alfred Bryan's sharp eye and inquisitive nature, none of the descendants of John William Masonhall would have ever known anything about the "other brother" John Peter or any of his descendants. Alfred saw a newspaper article in The Daily Oklahoman on May 2, 1976 showing a smiling Connie Lou Masonhall being named Queen of the Okeene, Oklahoma Rattlesnake Roundup and the quite rare surname (there are only about fifteen persons in the world named Masonhall), being the same as his German-born Grandmother Hannah, caused him to write regarding the connection. The letter eventually got around to me, the apparent keeper of the flame, and Alfred and I exchanged letters and phone calls in 1981 when he was 94 years old. I gained a wealth of information from visiting with Alfred and also during my trips to Sedalia and other points in Pettis County tracking down descendants of John Peter Masonhall, brother to my great-great grandfather, John William).
---Both brothers and their families were in Missouri in the 1870's. No information is available for the two daughters, Elizabeth/Elisabeth and Eave Catherine/Eva Catharina, except that Eave Catherine/Eva Catharina married a man named Jacob Waggner.
