---David A. Sample (b. 5-2-1833 in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana; d. 10-20-1897 in Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas) married Jane Elizabeth Foley (b. circa 1837 in Jasper County, Missouri; d. 5-19-1861 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas) on 5-10-1855 in Platte County, Missouri. David and Jane settled by the mouth of the Delaware River in what was to become Jefferson County, Kansas, near the town of Perry. There, they homesteaded the land, as the country had been opened to white settlers via passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill in 1854, erected a cabin and began farming. In 1856, the Samples furnished lumber from their farm for the construction of the Territorial State House at Lecompton. They had three children, all born on the homeplace near Perry, Kansas named:
(1) Lucinda Sample (b. 2-21-1856 near Perry, Kansas Territory; d. 6-17-1936 in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas) married George Washington Foley (b. 12-31-1849 in Jasper County, Missouri; d. 4-17-1941 in Atchison County, Kansas) on 3-5-1874 and they had twelve children.
(2) John W. Sample (b. 8-27-1857 near Perry, Kansas Territory; d. 4-15-1940) married Mary Emily Rouse (b. 5-28-1866; d. 8-21-1912) on 1-7-1885. Married Mary Alice Altig (b. 1877; d. 3-1934)
(3) Mary Jane Sample (b. 5-19-1861 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 2-21-1924) married William Gilfillen (deceased) on 9-6-1877.
---Jane Elizabeth died apparently after giving birth to her daughter Mary Jane. David then married Nancy Foley (b. 5-20-1842 in Jasper County, Missouri; d. 12-2-1909 in Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas), sister of Jane Elizabeth Foley-Sample, on 3-19-1863 in Platte County, Missouri. They had ten children, all born near Perry, Kansas named:
(1) Martha Ann Sample (b. 1-21-1864 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 3-28-1916 in Hansen, Twin Falls County, Idaho) married Charles Augustus Jones (b. 3-2-1864; d. 4-24-1929 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California) on 3-27-1884 in Jefferson County, Kansas.
(2) Thomas J. Sample (b. 12-21-1865 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 10-8-1868 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas).
(3) James W. Sample (b. 9-1-1867 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 1952) married Louisa.
(4) Maggie Sample (b. 11-25-1869 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 2-5-1870 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas).

(6) William "Billy" A. Sample (b. 6-13-1873 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 8-29-1953) married Katie Cavanaugh on 4-15-1901.
(7) Minnie M. Sample (b. 5-27-1875 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 7-26-1876 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas).
(8) Katie Sample (b. 7-6-1877 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 4-4-1928).
(9) David A. Sample Jr. (b. 4-10-1880 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 9-11-1944)
(10) Frederick Sample (b. 4-22-1882 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 3-24-1931).
---Jane Elizabeth and Nancy were the daughters of Thomas Foley (b. 1804 in Virginia; d. 1864 in Platte County, Missouri) and his second wife, Mary Jane Hawkins (b. 1812 in Kentucky; d. 1876), who were married on 7-17-1834 in Lincoln County, Missouri. Their siblings were Phillip, Rachel, Thomas, John, Mary, Elbert and Samuel. Half-siblings by Thomas' first wife, Permilla Todd (b. 12-20-1803 in Madison County, Kentucky; d. 10-24-1832 in Lincoln County, Missouri), were Dudley and Marthusa.
---The years that followed were a troubled and violent period of history. With a civil war looming on the horizon, there was a struggle within the new territory to become a designated "free" or "slave" state. Rampant violence (giving the area the name "Bloody Kansas") was the eventual result most notably just 15 miles to the south of the Sample homestead in Lawrence, a center of Free State activities and mecca for escaped slaves. It was the target of a vicious raid on August 21, 1863, by Confederate guerillas led by William C. Quantrill. 150 residents were murdered, the city was sacked and burned and about $1.5 million worth of property was destroyed. The unrest made it a troubling time for all of the settlers in the Kansas frontier. During the Civil War, David was a member of the Kansas State Militia.
---At the onset of the War, young Jane Elizabeth died leaving three young children motherless. But as mentioned above, one year and ten months to the day later, they had a new mother, their Aunt Nancy, Jane Elizabeth's sister, who David married in 1863. David and Nancy were long-time residents of the area, living there for over 50 years. Daughter Rebecca Jane was a 17-year-old teenager when a handsome young man from Kentucky rode into her life.
---Benjamin Grant Doan (b. 6-8-1867 in Harrison County, Kentucky; d. 8-4-1919 in Homestead, Blaine County, Oklahoma) is buried beside his wife, Rebecca Jane Sample-Doan, in Plymouth Cemetery, a little pioneer cemetery located a few miles south of Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma.
---As a young man, Benjamin left Harrison County and traveled to Jefferson County, Kansas where he met and, on 9-12-1888, married Rebecca Jane Sample (b. 1-14-1870 near Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas; d. 6-14-1925 in Homestead, Blaine County, Oklahoma), daughter of David A. Sample and Nancy Foley. Rebecca's grandparents were John W. Sample and Rebecca Davis. (see entries on previous page)
---Following the birth of their firstborn, Fred, the young family traveled by covered wagon to Mulhall in Oklahoma Territory where Richard and Addie were born. When the Cherokee Strip was opened on September 16, 1893, Ben made the run on opening day atop a gray mule named Betsy and staked a 160 acre claim approximately four miles south of the present site of Fairview in what was then named Woods County but later became Major County. The family lived in a covered wagon for awhile but Rebecca and the kids later returned to Perry, Kansas until Ben could dig a well and build a sod house. Living conditions were primitive and coyotes, rattlesnakes, bison, Indians and outlaws were plentiful. At night, the horses had to be guarded.
---He farmed the ground and had to travel 55 miles to sell the crops and worked for others at 50 cents a week for extra money. Eventually, churches, schools and railroads were built. The family lived in the sod house for five years and later bought 320 more acres and began constructing a two-story frame house to fit the needs of the growing family.
---Ben and Rebecca had eleven children named Fred, Richard, Addie, Anna Eliza, Harry, Claude, Katie Ellen, Clarence Ray, Jessie Marie, Bessie Pearl and Edith Mae.

---(Note: The previous information is a summary of some of the information I have collected over the past 40 years I have been involved in this ongoing genealogy project. This material represents those persons associated with my maternal grandmother, Addie Doan. This information now completes the ancestral tributaries leading to my paternal grandparents, Albert and Addie. In closing the section on paternal family history, I will honor that most loving and respected couple whose memories I cherish, Grandpa Albert and Grandma Addie, with a special story about their lives. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I took pleasure in the remembering.)
