Germany has the biggest following in American Football in Europe. There are over 200 teams competing in six league levels which are in turn broken up in to several divisions. There are even teams that compete in Germany not affiliated with any leagues. The leagues have a system where teams in the lower levels have a chance to advance to an upper tougher league and by the same token teams in an upper levels can fall to a lower league. This system does not cause a lot of confusion as one might think. The level of competition in each league usually stays competitive. The biggest changes come about because of old teams disbanding, new teams forming and teams merging to create a new team. This happen because football is a hobby in Germany and football clubs form when there is enough interest and players willing to play in an area. In the bigger cities most teams remain once formed because they are able to keep interest in the team and players. But in the smaller towns this is a real problem and thus a higher turnover rate of disbanded teams. Below are the leagues in Germany, click on one to see the teams playing in it. |
