TO BE TRULY THANKFUL REQUIRES A PURE SACRIFICE OF SELF

Scripture: Rom 12:1

(Rom 12:1 KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

1. The first and original Thanksgiving was of course a celebration of the first harvest that was completed by the Plymouth colonists in 1621, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer, shared by all the colonists and neighboring Native Americans. In 1817 New York adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom, and by the middle of the 19th century many other states had done the same.

2. But true Thanksgiving is gratitude towards God. And true Thanksgiving was given in the Old Testament and through out the Bible.

a. Sacrifice and offerings were to be made not grudgingly but with thanksgiving (Ps. 54:6)

b. The psalmist valued a song of thanksgiving more than sacrifice (Ps. 69:30-31).

c. David employed Levites "to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord" (1 Chron. 16:4).

d. Pilgrimage to the Temple and Temple worship were characterized by thanksgiving.

e. Thankfulness was expressed: for personal and national deliverance, Gods faithfulness to the covenant and for forgiveness.

3. Thanksgiving is a natural element of Christian worship and was expressed by early Christians for

a. Christ's healing ministry.

b. Christ's deliverance of the believer from sin.

c. God's indescribable gift of grace in Christ.

d. Faith of fellow Christians.

4. We are to give thanks for everything that God has done for us as Eph 5:20 says

(Eph 5:20 KJV) Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

5. God says we are to make a sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving

(Psa 107:22 KJV) And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

I. HOW TO MAKE A TRUE SACRIFICE OF THANKSGIVING.

(Rom 12:1 KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

A. True thanksgiving is not turkeys, sweet potatoes, and dressing, its not only raising of hands, songs, pianos and choirs singing beautiful spiritual music unto God, but it is your life loving, adoring, obeying His words, and serving God 100% actually doing His words.

(James 1:23 KJV) For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

(James 1:24 KJV) For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

(James 1:25 KJV) But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

a. So its not the ones that hear the word but those that hear and do the word that will be blessed.

B. GOD DEALT WITH ISRAEL CONCERNING THIS VERY PROBLEM.

a. The Jewish nation was caring out all of the rituals and celebrations and feast to show their thankfulness for God and to worship him, but it had turned into just a ritual.

b. They were going through all of the motions but they were still living in sin and God warned them that what they were doing was not real thankfulness, not real worship, but a lie.

(Isa 1:11 KJV) To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

(Isa 1:12 KJV) When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

(Isa 1:13 KJV) Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

(Isa 1:14 KJV) Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

(Isa 1:15 KJV) And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

(Isa 1:16 KJV) Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

(Isa 1:17 KJV) Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

(Isa 1:18 KJV) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(Isa 1:19 KJV) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

(Isa 1:20 KJV) But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

c. God was not pleased with their rituals he wanted a pure heart, a pure life before him, a life that was serving Him totally.

C. SAMUEL SAID WHAT GOD WANTS FROM US IS OBEDIENCE, THAT WE OBEY GOD AND HIS WORD, THAT IS A TRUE SACRIFICE UNTO GOD A TRUE THANKSGIVING FOR WHAT GOD HAS DONE.

(1 Sam 15:22 KJV) And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

(1 Sam 15:23 KJV) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry

D. DAVID SAID IT ISN'T IN THE RITUALS THE MOTIONS WE GO THROUGH EVERY SUNDAY, THE THREE SONGS AND A SERMON, BUT IT IS IN THE BROKEN HEART. THE HEART THAT IS BROKEN FOR JESUS CHRIST.

(Psa 51:16 KJV) For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

(Psa 51:17 KJV) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

1. CONTRITE- To be humble and repentant before God, crushed by the sense of guilt and sinfulness.

a. This is talking about dying to self making a true sacrifice of thanksgiving unto God.

II. THIS IS WHAT ROMANS 12:1 IS SAYING TO US, IF YOU WANT TO BE TRULY THANKFUL TO GOD FOR WHO HE IS AND FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE THAN FOLLOW THE SCRIPTURE:

(Rom 12:1 KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

A. Present your bodies a living sacrifice

a. This is simply sacrifice your own lusts, desires, wants, for the Jesus Christ and for His will which is sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others and quit being selfish and only worrying about yourself.

B. Holy

a. God expects you to be Holy, Holy through the blood of Jesus Christ, Holy through the Holy Ghost, the comforter which was sent to give you power to be witnesses and to live for Him.

b. God says that no man shall see God unless you are Holy.

(Heb 12:14 KJV) Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

C. Acceptable unto God

a. This just saying what the scriptures has already pointed out to us, that true thankfulness, true sacrifice is produced by our lives, if our lives are producing sinful fruit it doesn't matter how long you sing, clap your hands, how many scriptures you can quote, if your a preacher or Sunday school teacher, hand raiser, God will not except it and your only fooling yourself.

b. Our sacrifice has to come from a broken and contrite heart full of the love of God, that is busy serving Him and not ourselves.

D. Reasonable Service

a. When we get our priorities right and we actually serve God out of true love for Him and not out of our own selfishness, and lives are full of prayer and reading our Bibles and actually obeying His word than and only than is that even reasonable service unto the Lord.

NOW ARE YOU TRULY THANKFUL TO GOD FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE OR DO YOU JUST LIKE TO EAT TURKEY?

WHY DON'T YOU MAKE THIS THANKSGIVING A TRUE THANKSGIVING AND GIVE YOURSELF TOTALLY TO CHRIST AND SERVE HIM, THAT IS WHAT REALLY PLEASES THE LORD.
