WHAT WOULD YOU CALL JESUS

Scripture: Acts 2:36

(Acts 2:36 KJV) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

A. NAMES OF GOD The name of God holds an important key to understanding the doctrine of God and the doctrine of revelation. The name of God is a personal disclosure and reveals His relationship with His people. His name is known only because He chooses to make it known.

El-Shaddai "God of the Mountains" or "The Almighty God."

El-Elyon "The Most High God" or "The Exalted One"

El-Olam "God of Eternity" or "God the Everlasting One"

El-Roi "God who Sees me" or "God of Vision"

B. The covenant name for God was "Yahweh." Israel's faith was a new response to God based on His disclosure. This name was so unique and powerful that God formed a covenant with His people based upon his self-revelation. See YHWH.

1. Yahweh Titles appear in English translations as Jehovah. See YHWH.

a. Yahweh-Jireh "The Lord will Provide" (Gen. 22:14). This was the name given to the location where God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice in the place of Isaac. This name is a testimony to God's deliverance.

b. Yahweh-Nissi "The Lord is my Banner" (Ex. 17:15). Moses acribed this name to God after a victory over the Amalekites. The name of God was considered a banner under which Israel could rally for victory. The Lord's name was the battle cry.

c. Yahweh-Mekaddesh "The Lord Sanctifies" (Ex. 31:13). Holiness is the central revelation of God's character. God calls for a people who are set apart.

d. Yahweh-Shalom "The Lord is Peace" (Judg. 6:24). This was the name of the altar that Gideon built at Ophrah signifying that God brings well-being not death to His people.

e. Yahweh-Sabaoth "The Lord of Hosts" (1 Sam. 1:3; Jer. 11:20; compare 1 Sam. 17:45). This can also be rendered, "The Lord Almighty." It represents God's power over the nations and was closely tied to Shiloh, to the ark of the covenant, and to prophecy. The title designates God as King and ruler of Israel, its armies, its Temple, and of all the universe.

f. Yahweh-Rohi "The Lord is my Shepherd" (Ps. 23:1). God is the One who provides loving care for His people.

g. Yahweh-Tsidkenu "The Lord is Our Righteousness" (Jer. 23:5-6; 33:16). This was the name Jeremiah gave to God, the Righteous King, who would rule over Israel after the return from captivity. He would establish a new kingdom of justice.

h. Yahweh-Shammah "The Lord is There" (Ezk. 48:35) This is the name of God associated with the restoration of Jerusalem, God's dwelling place.

2. Who is Jesus to you? Saviour is the most common name for Jesus and is what most people think of Jesus and what most people want Jesus to be.

(2 Sam 22:3 KJV) The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

(Isa 43:11 KJV) I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

(Luke 2:11 KJV) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

(Acts 5:31 KJV) Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

(1 John 4:14 KJV) And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

I. Both Lord and Christ (Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ)

A. Christians want to call Jesus many things.

a. Yahweh-Jireh "The Lord will Provide"

b. Yahweh-Nissi "The Lord is my Banner"

c. Yahweh-Mekaddesh "The Lord Sanctifies"

d. Yahweh-Shalom "The Lord is Peace"

e. Yahweh-Sabaoth "The Lord of Hosts"

f. Yahweh-Rohi "The Lord is my Shepherd"

g. Yahweh-Tsidkenu "The Lord is Our Righteousness"

h. Yahweh-Shammah "The Lord is There"

i. El-Shaddai "God of the Mountains" or "The Almighty God."

j. El-Elyon "The Most High God" or "The Exalted One"

k. El-Olam "God of Eternity" or "God the Everlasting One"

l. El-Roi "God who Sees me" or "God of Vision"

m. Healer

n. Holy Ghost Baptiser

o. Sheild

B. God is all of these things and many more, and Jesus expects us to receive all that he is.

C. But the Scripture says in Acts 2:36

(Acts 2:36 KJV) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

a. Vs. 2:36 Not only is Jesus the Messiah, but He is also Lord; i.e., God, full deity.

D. A lot of Christians only want to make Jesus what they want.

a. They want to pick out what they want Jesus to be in their life.

b. Maybe healer, saviour, provider, etc.

c. But God made Jesus both Lord and Christ.

E. Jesus is not just the Messiah he is Lord.

(Luke 2:11 KJV) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. (did you catch what this scripture says "which is Christ the Lord"

a. Before His resurrection, Jesus was addressed with the Jewish title of honor Rabbi ("teacher").

b. The resurrection changed the respectful student/teacher relationship of the disciples with Jesus into the believers' servant/Lord relationship.

c. Paul said that God honored Jesus with the title of Lord as His response to Jesus' obedient suffering (Phil. 2:6-11)

(Phil 2:6 KJV) Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

(Phil 2:7 KJV) But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

(Phil 2:8 KJV) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

(Phil 2:9 KJV) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

(Phil 2:10 KJV) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; (both Lord and Christ)

(Phil 2:11 KJV) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

F. We Must Receive Jesus not only as Saviour but also Lord

a. (Rom 10:9 KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:9: Vs. 10:9 the Lord Jesus. Lord, or Yahweh, is the OT name for God; thus he who confesses that Jesus is Lord affirms His deity.

1. In other words what your really doing in Romans 10:9 is not only excepting His sacrifice for you and His gift of salvation your excepting Him and He is Lord of every thing.

2. Think about it salvation is a gift from the one who is giving it, but when you get saved you have to except Christ as Lord or the gift is not any good.

b. (Rom 10:10 KJV) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

1. Rom 10:10: Vs. 10:10 These are simultaneous actions: one inward (heart) and the other outward (mouth).

2. There it is two actions believing in Christ first, receiving Christ first as Lord and then excepting with our mouth through repentence salvation.

3. In Act 2:36 God is telling mankind that he must do more than just receive his son he must make him Lord of their life.

(Acts 2:36 KJV) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

4. In Matt. 7:21-22 Jesus further explains what it really takes to be a true disciple of Christ.

(Mat 7:21 KJV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 7:21: Vs. 7:21 Obedience to the will of God comes first.

(Mat 7:22 KJV) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:22: Vs. 7:22 devils. Lit., demons. There is only one devil (Satan), but there are many demons. The demons are those angels who sinned with Satan by following him when he revolted against God. Some are confined (2 Peter 2:4), but many are active in the world (12:43-45). They seek to thwart the purposes of God (Eph. 6:11-12); they promote their own system of doctrine (1 Tim. 4:1); they can inflict diseases (9:33); and they possess the bodies of men and of animals (4:24; Mark 5:13).

a. Many people will be fooled by following men that appear to have powers to do certain things, but if you check out their life are they really obedient to God or are they doing their own thing.

b. Hows their witness, check it closely, are they obedient to Gods will, or their own, do they follow Gods word or are they men pleasers, or do they tear down the body of Christ through division, backbiting, gossiping, or trying to start their own little bible study or group rather than come under the authority of the Church because their life style doesn't match up to the word of God.

3. What is the Lords will, its making him Lord of your life.

a. Not just saviour but Lord of your life.

b. Many people want Christ to save them, to meet their needs etc. but when it comes to making him Lord of their life that is where they have the problem.

c. When we make Jesus the Lord of our lives we become His servent and obey His commands. All of them.

1. Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

2. (John 12:26 KJV) If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

3. (Gal 1:10 KJV) For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

4. (Acts 2:18 KJV) And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

5. (Rom 6:16 KJV) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

(Rom 6:17 KJV) But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

(Rom 6:18 KJV) Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

(Rom 6:19 KJV) I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

(Rom 6:20 KJV) For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

(Rom 6:21 KJV) What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

(Rom 6:22 KJV) But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

(Rom 6:23 KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

d. If we will not except Jesus as Lord and Christ as Acts 2:36 explains we have not really excepted him.

e. You can not have Christ in your heart if you have not surrendered your life totally to him as Lord.

5. But if we will be Christs servant he will pour out on us all the blessings of heaven and use us to work in the kingdom of God.

a. (Acts 2:18 KJV) And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

6. Jesus needs people that will make Him Lord of their life and not just saviour to receive His free gifts and everything else they can get from the lord and do their own thing.

7. He needs people that will count the costs and become faithfull and dedicated to the Kingdom of God.

(Luke 14:27 KJV) And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

(Luke 14:28 KJV) For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

(Luke 14:29 KJV) Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

(Luke 14:30 KJV) Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

CLOSING:

1. WHO DO YOU SAY THAT JESUS IS TODAY? HE SHOULD BE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

2. ARE YOU JUST RECEIVING EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET FROM HIM AND DOING YOUR OWN THING OR ARE YOU REALLY RECEIVING HIM AS LORD AND CHRIST.

3. IF YOU HAVEN'T MADE HIM LORD OF YOUR LIFE YOU HAVEN'T REALLY RECEIVED YOUR SALVATION, JUST AN IMATATION OF IT.

4. THE BIBLE SAYS IN THE LAST DAYS MANY WILL BE FOOLED EVEN THE VERY ELECT IF THE TIME WAS NOT SHORTENED.

5. IF JESUS IS NOT THE LORD IN YOUR LIFE THAN YOU HAVE A IMATATION SALVATION, IT'S NOT THE REAL THING.

6. WHO DO YOU SERVE, TOTALLY GOD OR MAMON.
