HAVE YOU HAD ANY GOOD HEART BURN LATELY
Open Door Fellowship
July 20, 1997
Rev. Steven Wagner
Scripture: Luke 24:13-32
(Luke 24:32 KJV) And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
(Jer 20:9 KJV) Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
(Jer 23:29 KJV) Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
(John 6:63 KJV) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
(Luke 24:45 KJV) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
A. Some heartburn is good, like when Jesus is talking to us and we fill his presence around us and we feel His word inside of us.
B. These men were talking about Jesus sharing the Lord together. As they shared the Lord together Jesus came to them and talked with them.
C. I believe the two things that Christians need today is to fellowship together sharing the things of God, and to Talk to Jesus every day.
D. The truth is that many of the Church today is to busy for God, to busy for the Church, to busy for their brothers or sisters in the Lord. They don't have time for them, or they are not important enough.
a. Hear me this morning Gods children should be more important to us than anything in this world. This is Satans world do you love it, do you feel comfortable in it, if so than you probably are a part of it.
b. Many times though we only have time for our brothers and sisters or the Church if nothing else is going on then we can squeeze them in.
c. Why are we spiritually dying because we don't fellowship with the Church or with Jesus on a regular basis.
d. As we spend time together we can pray for one another, talk about Jesus Christ sharing the scriptures and building one another up in the Lord.
E. The scripture tells us that they begin to talk to Jesus, he came to them.
a. The most important part of this scripture is that Jesus came to them and they talked to Him.
b. We need to talk to Jesus every day.
DID NOT OUR HEARTS BURN WITHIN US
I. HEARTBURN
A. Lets look at heartburn for a moment. There is good heartburn and bad heartburn.
a. Heartburn is painful and very uncomfortable.
b. When we get heartburn what do we do?
1. We take some kind of antacid to get rid of it.
2. We take the medicine and it soothes our stomachs.
B. Correlation between this kind of heartburn and the kind of heartburn the two men were having.
1. When we look for a medicine for heartburn, we look for something that tastes good, not like the old medicines years ago that tasted worse than the heartburn, milk of magnesia, kopectage, caster oil, etc.
2. We find a medicine that tastes like candy and that will take care of our heartburn like these. Fruit flavored not bad anyone want one?
C. But I want to talk to you about a different kind of heartburn the kind that is caused by the Lord Jesus Christ talking within us.
a. Its a lot like the other heartburn in many areas.
b. It is uncomfortable many times when Christ talks and opens up His scriptures within us.
1. I believe a lot of us don't want to talk to Christ because of what he will reveal in our life. It will be to painful the heartburn will be more than we can take.
(Heb 4:12 KJV) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
2. Heb 4:12 says a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. When we spend time with Jesus he is going to deal with every area of our lives ( sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow).
3. This can produce spiritual heartburn, Even Jer 20:9 says even though he did not want to deal with Gods word anymore it was in his heart as a burning fire, and he was tired because of it and could not forbare.
4. Spiritual heartburn can be painful and even uncomfortable sometimes but unlike the first regular heartburn caused by something we eat, this heartburn is good for us.
5. This heartburn can change our hearts, lives if we will allow Jesus to speak his words to us and allow those words to change us.
D. This takes us to another way physical heartburn is like spiritual heartburn. The medicine you take.
a. The medicine you take for the old fashion heartburn like we said before comes in a terrible tasting or good tasting kinds.
b. Most people will try to find something they can take that covers the real taste of the antacid.
c. Just like you take medicine for your heartburn, the devil has medicine for the spiritual heartburn, a medicine that is covered with some very palatable or tasty flavors.
d. His purpose is to get rid of your heartburn the good kind, the kind we need to walk for Jesus, and stay on that narrow path to be saved.
1. Just like the world has come up with some good tasting medicine so has Satan lets see what we have here to get rid of your spiritual heartburn.
Lust, James 1
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
drugs,
1 Cor 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Luke 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
Luke 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
money, Luke 12
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
work, Mark 13
34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
family, Luke 14
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
lazy, Mark 16
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
worldly fun, 1 John 2
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
fighting, Matthew 7
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
no prayer to busy,
Mat 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Luke 22:45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
Luke 22:46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
not reading your bible to busy, 2 Tim 2
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
a. And he has even covered it with some good tasteing stuff. That looks good and smells good and above all else it works very good.
Conclusion:
A. The devil has some spiritual antacid for your burning heart.
a. He wants to put out the fire of the Holy Spirit in your life if you let him.
b. He doctors up his medicine and sends it out for you to eat.
c. And like Eve in the garden of Eden we are tempted into eating the fruit that will rob us of God.
B. Talking to God can be painful sometimes if we have things in our lives that need to come out, but it is the only way to get them out.
a. We must allow Gods spirit to burn away the impurities in our souls.
b. When we have allowed Jesus Christ by his Holy Spirit to burn away all the blackness in our hearts, then our communion with Christ is a very enjoyable experience and fills us with strength and power to overcome all of the wiles of the devil.
(WE MUST HAVE A DAILY WALK WITH JESUS AND A TALK WITH JESUS TO ALLOW HIM TO SHARE AND OPEN THE SCRIPTURES TO US)
