Y2K: The Year 2000 Bug

Introduction

The year 2000 is going to be a more interesting year than most of us expect or realize. I’ll expect that you didn’t know that on January 1, 2000 you might not have clean water, or any water for that matter. Or that you’re electricity might go out while you’re watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s show. I’ll imagine that you probably haven’t put much thought to what might happen due to a simple computer error created over thirty years ago.
Well, there is cause to be on your guard about this problem. In case you’re not privy to the things going on in this area, please, let me explain. When computers we’re just becoming popular, memory was vastly more expensive than it is now, so computer programmers tended to "cut corners” where they could. One place where they did so was in the date field. Instead of writing out December 1, 1972 or even 12/1/1972 they programmed the computer to see the date as follows: 12/1/72. Therefore the computer has no real concept of what the century is, just the last two digits of the year. “So, what?” You say. So, did I ...at first.
When your computer’s turn over to 1/1/00 on that New Year’s day, things might not go on as usual, because a computer will either:
1) Think that the year is 1900.
2) Not know how to handle the double zero and shut down, in some cases permanently.
3) Think it’s 1980. (For some strange reasons there’s no need to get into here.)
4) Give crazy output.
Still, you say: “So!” Well, hold on. Your personal computer isn’t the only thing that could be affected by this Millenium Bug, almost everything is reliant, in one way or another, on computers, and the fix isn’t as easy as everyone thought that it would be. But, the computer dates are a big problem, but probably not the biggest. There are smaller chips, called “imbedded chips,” inside everything from Irons to Oil rigs at the bottom of the North Sea. They are what you might think of as the “guardians” of our everyday lives. These chips are in:
1) Hospital Life Support Systems
2) Airline Jets
3) Computerized Cars
4) Mass transit systems
5) Water & Electrical systems
6) Traffic lights
7) Pacemakers, etc.
If that’s not enough to get you to thinking, consider this:
January 1, 2000 is in the middle of winter. What if the electricity goes out ...in nearly every part of the United States, and even the world. How long will it take the Electric company man to get to you amidst the chaos?
What if trucking and railways shut down because of this? No food delivery means panic, which means runs on much needed supplies. These chips regulate the flow of everything from lawn chemicals used in sprinkler systems to Sewage from backing up into your water at the plants. What happens when they’re gone?
Don’t get me wrong, this report is not meant to scare you in the least. It is merely meant as a tool to inform you of what could come. The experts are divided as to what will actually happen when the clocks turn over that night, but all are expecting something, no matter how big or small.
But, consider this, we are leading in repairing this problem and some of our Government agencies won’t be through until around 2010-2015. The rest of the world is behind us and we’re way behind. Read this quote from one commentator on the possible crisis:

“Isn't it interesting that there is less than 2 years until this unforgiving deadline rolls around, yet [only] one in five major companies have a plan to fix the problem. Several Major COUNTRIES are failing to seriously address the problem. Ninety-five percent of the companies trying to address the problem report finding the necessary staff is difficult or impossible.”

In closing, I would like to ask you a question. Do you have fire insurance on your home? Of course you do! Do you expect your home to burn down? Of course not. You should take the same measures with this all-to-possible crisis. Pray and ask what God would have you do. Things might not be as bad as some think, but something will happen, guaranteed.
