AILLTREACHA MOTHAIR
THE CLIFFS OF MOHER

These world famous cliffs on the west coast of Ireland bear our name but seem to have been named for an old ruined fortress which used to grace its top. Mothar being the Irish for "ruin". The present O'Brien tower was built last century as a lookout.

Cliffs Inspire Musical Group Called Moher

A Croatian Connection?
Sharon at Shada2@aol.com reports that her grandmother, a Croatian by birth, went by the surname Moher. It seems highly unlikely that our Irish Mohers and her Croatian Mohers are linked but it is interesting how similar surnames arise a continent apart.

A German Connection?
A researcher at tdoyle@just.doit.co indicates that the German name Moser is sometimes spelt Moher.
