26. William Obediah Cureton, son of Celia Bannister (Polly?) and William Jackson Cureton was born about (1798) 1816 in Hawkins county, Georgia or possibly in South Carolina. He died in 1870 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in Old Smyrna Cemetery.
He served in Co. K., Texas Volunteer Infantry of the Confederate States Army. He "bought 79 acres on November 3, 1830 in Henry County, Alabama" and migrated to Nacogdoches County, Texas according to some in 1858; but, there is no records of him in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County and Charlotte Alice Cureton his daughter was born 15 February 1859 in Alabama.
This writer believes that he did not come to Nacogdoches County until sometime in 1860, after the 1860 Census had been taken since there are no Cureton's listed at all in the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas. William's son Thomas Kelly Cureton stated in his Civil War Records that he came to Texas in September of 1860.
William Obediah Cureton married Mary J. Kelly, daughter of Emily Hill and Elias Kelly, on 25 February 1845 in Pike County, Alabama. Mary was born ca. 1824 in South Carolina and died sometime before 1890 and is believed to have been buried in either Old Smyra Cemetery or Swift Cemetery, probably unmarked.
William Obediah Cureton is located on the Tax List of 1865 in Nacogdoches County; but, in the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas. Mary J. Cureton is living in District IV Chireno and William Obediah is not listed. Yet, William O. Cureton (Ref. # 13) is listed on the Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County for 1870. From this it can be taken that William Obediah died in 1870 prior to the time the Census was taken.
The 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas liste Mary J. Cureton as follows:
District IV Chireno 154-160
Mary Curington 46 F W Alabama David 17 M W Alabama Adline 16 F W Alabama Nicholas 13 M W Alabama Allis 11 F W Alabama
Mary J. Kelly and William Obediah Cureton were the parents of:
37. James Jackson Cureton, born about 1826 in Georgia.
38. Louisa C. Cureton, born ca. 1837 in Mississippi
39. Joel H. Cureton, born ca. 1840 in Alabama
40. Thomas Kelly Cureton, born 9 March 1847 in Alabama.
41. Elias L. Cureton, born 10 January 1850 in Alabama.
42. James David Cureton, born 11 February 1853 in Alabama.
43. Adeline Cureton, born 30 September 1854 in Alabama.
44. Richard Nicholas Cureton, born 28 March 1857 in Alabama
45. Charlotte Alice Cureton, born 15 February 1859 in Alabama.
Notice the gap between the dates of birth of James Jackson Cureton, Joel H. Cureton, Louisa C. Cureton and Thomas Kelly Cureton. This tends to lead one to believe that there are other children born to this couple who are unknown at this time.
Note. In Carylon Ericson's Nacogdoches-Gateway to Texas Vol. II, she states that William Obediah was born ca. 1816 in Hawkins County, Georgia and she lists two sets of parents for Mary Jane Kelly Cureton; 1. Aley and William R. Kelly 2. Emily Hill and Elias Kelly. She also States that he is listed in both the 1870 and the 1880 Census but his is not listed in either one. Mary J. Kelly Cureton is listed in the 1870 and 1880 but not William Obediah.
Note: Halifax County, North Carolina: "There is also the will of James Jackson, Sr., September, 1761, naming his son James Jackson (Book 1, page 45). He became the Georgia general in the Revolution". William Jackson Cureton, born 1798 in Georgia or South Carolina was named after him and his son William Obediah Cureton named his son "James Jackson Cureton, born in Georgia about 1826 was named after him" (James Jackson).
Note: There is a picture of William Obediah "W.O." Cureton in The People of Nacogdoches County At The Civil War, by Carylon Ericson (S.F.A.S.U. Library, Special Collections).
