WALES

We left the Knockbrack B&B at 8 AM. The drive wasn't as bad as we had expected so plenty of time to spare.

At the Ferry Wharf

The big wash.

We accessed email from an Internet Kiosk at the ferry terminal. It took about 18 minutes for our incoming mail to download from Acay and we couldn't access Yahoo at all so couldn't send our usual report. We wrote a brief chapter to our daughter Jan and asked her to forward it for us.

The sign here in the terminal points to the sea and says

Holyhead:

52 nautical miles

60 statute miles

96 kilometres

90 minutes.

The ride was smooth as velvet. As most people would know, the thought of the sea journey was terrifying to me (Beth), but we were well under-way before I knew we were even moving. The ferry was like a giant entertainment centre for adults and children with gaming areas for all ages (eg. pokies, blackjack table and computer games). There were various styles of food and eating places including McDonalds and also televisions and videos and a big screen.

Both at the Ferry terminal at Holyhead, Wales.

At Holyhead, the Avis Representative was waiting inside the terminal for us. The car is a Vauxhall Astral 1.6, the radio and the seat comfort isn't nearly as good as the previous one but it goes well. As long as you want to go forward says Russ - he couldn't work out reverse for ages! It turned out that there is a collar under the gear knob, which needs to be lifted.

We had booked the B&B by Internet before leaving home. We showed the Avis Rep. the address given on our email and he scratched his head in bewilderment before approaching the airline service desk for their help. It was decided that it was just a house name and not an address. The helpful booking clerk rang through to the B&B for the full address and instructions, which we appreciated. Getting out of Holyhead and across to Bangor was tedious and slow... quite a long trip AND lots of roadworks. We coped with the directions to 'Nant Y Fedw' very well until the last turn.

Difficulty interpreting the Welsh signs didn't make it any easier to find but eventually after a couple of very tight country lanes we phoned our host and he rescued us (from virtually around the corner).

Gardens, Nant y Fedw, Bangor

Nant y Fedw

It is a beautiful 150-year-old farm cottage (or 2 semi detached which had been opened in the middle to become one) with a great back garden protected by tall trees and a hill. It had many Australian natives.... (see our photo in front of the Bottlebrush!)

We sat out in the back yard for coffee and got too hot in the sun - it reached close to 30 degrees. A five-minute stroll took us to the village...1/2 dozen houses and a pub! But that pub had the most wonderful meals... probably the best meals we'd had except maybe at Eyeries.

We would have loved to stay on but decided we'd better try to keep on schedule and head south to Swansea.

The first 21 DAYS HAVE FLOWN. We have covered 2012 miles, 100 a day on average!
