Tuesday 25 July

I watched the milking. They have taken 3,500 litres in the past 24 hours. This is peak season due to calving. The normal average is only 1,250 litres. Their milk goes to the Nestle plant in Carlisle for powdered milk.

We were told tunnels found under the historic stables in Carlisle where today's showground and race course are, were used for one of Bonny Prince Charlie's escapes!

We left Blackwell Farm in fine drizzle and headed toward the Scottish border and Glasgow (96 miles) on the M6 motorway. We filled up with petrol along the way 85.9 pence per litre.

Dumbarton, just west of Glasgow

A new friend at Corbiere B & B

.We marvelled at the patches of incredibly bright lemon/yellow on the distant hills (through the drizzle). It turned out to be fields of rape oil seed. We had morning tea at a small community hall at Douglas, 30 miles from Glasgow. We bought a map and got directions for circumventing the city and were off again. Glad we didn't get too close to the city. Sydney on the worst days could never equal that smog. Even in the far outer suburbs, buildings were soot covered. Really obvious in spots where buildings were in the process of being cleaned or others had been 'sort of cleaned'.

After lunching, developing 3 more sets of photos and having my glasses adjusted at Dumbarton we followed Loch Lomand up to Tarbet then west across to the top of Loch Fyne and down its western side to Lochgilphead where had booked a B&B.

Coming into Inverary we stopped to take photos of a castle keep, way on top of the mountain overlooking Inverness castle. Our B&B is a lovely house in a rural setting just out of town. Our room is an enormous loft room with views on both sides. A big four poster double bed, a 3 foot bed, 2 seater lounge and room for all that again. The bathroom was nearly as big with an enormous free-standing bath.

Dinner was 'pub grub' at the next little village. I only had an entree as we had noticed how enormous the servings were.
