Blair Athol

We continued south along Loch Ness. Urquhart Castle required a $5 entry fee just to get into the grounds so we gave that a miss.

The only time we saw 'Nessie' was in the tourist shops... he wouldn't show his face for us! At the end of Loch Ness the Caledonian Canal joins Loch Lochy. The road crosses the canal twice, across bridges that can swing aside to allow river craft through. And we were held up twice at these waiting for yachts. All we could see beyond the line of traffic ahead was a tall mast moving through the paddocks!

We stopped for coffee at Spean Bridge, a restaurant/tourist shop set up in an old weaving centre with looms still set up for demonstrations.

There in the garden we saw 2 species of Australian Eucalypts and a flowering Tea Tree, thriving so far from home.

After leaving Spean Bridge we vaguely headed NE, not really sure of directions but eventually at the road junction near Laggan we had to make the decision so decided to go south to Pitlochry. We stopped at Blair Athol along the way after being intrigued by the distant glimpses of a suspension bridge and Blair Castle.

Blair Athol itself is a very old village with a working water mill.

The suspension bridge, near the beautiful Castle Gatehouse was quite a large pedestrian thoroughfare across a wide river-bed (not much water) onto a very large paddock and eventually onto the highway.

On then, to Pitlochry and Donavourd Farm House bed and breakfast. We knew within minutes of arrival that we wanted to stay more than one night here. Plenty to see and do around here, lovely accommodation and hosts. When we mentioned our desire for an old fashioned home cooked meal, Somersal, our hostess offered to cook one for just $8 a head. At dinner we decided to stay on until Friday morning and then travel straight through to Edinburgh to the airport and home.

After dinner, Stephen, our host, offered to scan some photos and allowed us to type and save the most recent episodes of pour travel saga. By then it was 10.30 PM.
