A distant descendant of the Buccleugh, being the celebrated author and poet, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) wrote the book "Redgauntlet." One may be disappointed in the bood with such a title, thinking it should be a book of chivalry, knights and battles. Redgauntlet, published in 1824, is a novel taking place in the summer of 1765, and centering around the fictitious third Jacobite rebellion to restore the Stewart family on the throne of England. Redgauntlet is a fictitious nameof one of the most ancient and honorable families of Scotland. This novel mentions several recognizable points in Cumberland, along the Solway Firth, as well as making commentaries.... In Chapter 15, Scott refers to a group of individuals as the "the White Ladies". This is supposed to refer to the Salkeld Family of White Hall in Cumberland.(10/07/00)
