WHO ARE YOU? Page Updated February 15, 2002 This is the place to share something about yourself, your family, pets, occupation, what ever! Introduce yourself to the rest of The Salkeld Family! PleaseEMAIL any information. Thank you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Nancy Salkeld, Location Unknown Hello. My name is Nancy Salkeld, my husband is David Salkeld and part of the Salkelds from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. We have two boys, Patrick and Benjamin Salkeld. David's father, Ian, is originally from Port Elizabeth and his family is dated back to the Salkeld towns in England. From Ken Salkeld, Indiana, U.S.A. My family started in Chester, Pennsylvania, and went to Indiana, then Kansas, then back to Indiana. I work as an Extension Agent/Educator for Purdue University. We have one daughter, a sophomore at Purdue University, and a son who is a senior in high school. My wife is a Junior and Senior High School science teacher. We raise Registered Angus cattle and registered Hampshire sheep. We live in Lexington, Indiana, about 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A. From Charles Salkeld, Delaware, U.S.A. My part of the family started in Chester, Pennsylvania in the early 1700's, direct descendant of John and Agnes Salkeld who came from England and landed in Chester. I live just across the Delaware/Pennsylvania state line, about 5 miles south of Chester. So my part of the family has moved about 5 miles in 300 years! I live in the Village of Arden, yes named after the Forest of Arden in England and in Shakespeare's writings, and we have a Shakespeare Festival every year. We also have many clubs in Arden called Gilds. I am a Senior Case Manager for the Division of Social Services, State of Delaware, and have 1 sister, Kathleen Salkeld, and 2 dogs, Buster, a pure bred Piebold dachshund and Tippy, an All-American breed. From Keith Salkeld, Kent, England Although living in Kent I was born in Carlisle, Cumberland and my family originates from West Cumberland. They lived mainly to the south-west of Cockermouth at various times in the villages of Dean, Pardshaw, Mockerkin, Ullock, and earlier in Distington and Harrington, near Workington. This area is rich in Salkeld history, and the Salkelds of Whitehall, a manor house north of Cockermouth, were direct descendants of Sir Richard Salkeld, Lord of Corby. These Whitehall Salkelds had descendants living in Parshaw in the 17th and 18th centuries and it may well be that there is a connection, although I have yet to prove it! From Chris Salkeld, Idaho, U.S.A. My name is Chris Salkeld, and I live in Boise, Idaho. I am originally from Seattle, Washington where my father Larry Salkeld was born, raised and still lives. My grandfather Ralph Salkeld passed away many years ago, and the only other Salkeld I know of and have met is Blackie Salkeld from Montana. I think I have relatives back east somewhere, but I don't know for sure. Your website is fascinating, and I had no clue as to the history of my name. Thank you. From Tamy L. Salkeld, North Carolina, U.S.A. I pulled up the Salkeld site on the web and was thrilled to see it. This will give my children information my son always wanted. My name is Tamy Salkeld, and I have two children, Aaron Salkeld and Jennifer Salkeld. My children and I live in Hope Mills, North Carolina, which is just outside of Fayetteville. (It) would be great to have us listed on your Salkeld page - my 9 year old (Aaron) would love to see that! He is always asking if Roger Salkeld (the baseball player) is somehow related and loves that kind of stuff. Thanks again! From Sian Salkeld-Bloor, Cheshire, United Kingdom Hi my name is Sian Bloor(Nee Salkeld, from Sale, Cheshire, UK), born 3rd February 1970, I am 29 years old and married Steven Bloor on 11th July 1998. We now have our first child on the way, expected on 1st March 2000. I am the only daughter of Michael John Salkeld (from Sale, Cheshire) and Margaret Joyce Salkeld(Nee Hughes, from Llanfyllin, Wales). I have 2 brothers, the elder David Salkeld (Sale, UK), and Peter Salkeld(Sale, UK) who is married to Susan Mary Salkeld(Nee Morris, Sale, UK), they have 2 children, Joanne Louise Salkeld born 5th June 1989 and Emily Victoria Salkeld born 27th January 1998. My grandfather died in the early 70's he was called Wilfred Salkeld, we think born in Huff. We believe he was the youngest of a large family (mostly brothers that were killed in the war). My father has 2 sisters, Margaret Salkeld (Sale, UK) and Kathleen Salkeld (moved to Belgium, now deceased) she has 2 daughters Margaret and Cecilia, both married and living in Belgium. He also has 1 brother named Peter Salkeld who has one son called Ian Salkeld. From Horacio Salkeld, Lima, Peru I'm surprised finding so many "relatives" around the world (great!). You should know that here in PERU (South America) a Salkeld branch arrived around 1830 and is now a large family in this country and others. Our family lives mainly in Lima, the capital, but has many members living in other countries like USA, France, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Australia, etc. The first Salkeld who arrived was Mr. Frederick Salkeld. It would be great if somebody could help us in tracing back for the family history. From Rebecca Salkeld-Work, Washington, U.S.A. I too used to think we were the only ones.... I'll fill you in on a little history of the Illinois Salkelds. There are a few of us located in a tow called Kankakee, IL. The Salkelds in Illinois are a pretty private and close knit family. On my side, I have three brothers Matthew Franklin, Luke Franklin and Timothy Franklin Salkeld. My father is Duane Thomas Salkeld and he originally married my mother Terry Hill, they later divorced and he married Mary Quigley, my stepmother. My father has one brother, William Salkeld and one sister Joyce Salkeld. My uncle Bill has 6 children Mark Franklin, Sue, Barbara, Patricia, Karen and Daniel Franklin Salkeld (the boys all got my grandfathers 1st name as middle names, as well as they all received biblical names.... My grandparents are Frank and Frances Salkeld. My grandfather passed away before I was born...and my grandmother just recently passed away last year. All of my cousins still live in Illinois but my brothers and I have all left and have lived all over the world. My grandfather Frank, was very well known in our town(Kankakee). He ran a pool/gambling hall, which later he converted into a well known sporting goods store(3 story JCPenny conversion)...after 50 years the store still exists, they sold the old and replaced it with a new 5000 square foot store and it is still run by our family. My grandfathers picture hangs proudly in the store. My father and uncle took over when my grandfather passed away and now it is run by my cousin Dan Salkeld. The store was called Salkeld and Sons Sporting Goods, now it is simply Salkelds. From Paul Salkeld, London, England My name is Paul Salkeld, I'm 23 and I live in London. I've been down here for 3 months now, having moved from Sheffield to work for Sky Sports. My father John and mother Susan both live and were brought up in Sheffield. My father is currently embarking on a considerable amount of family research and I'm sure he could impart a lot more information than I ever could as to the history of Salkelds, at least those from our area, that being South Yorkshire. There certainly aren't many Salkelds around. I know that our local phone book only had 3 or 4 out of a local population of about 1 million people. If I can get hold of some interesting information I'll try to write back. See you. From Gilbert R. Salkeld, Florida, U.S.A. My name is Gilbert Salkeld. I am originally from Michigan, moving to Florida after my retirement in 1993. I am the son of Ervin Salkeld, and the grandson of Oscar Salkeld, who came over from England around 1881. From Graham Salkeld, Durham, England[My] website came about because in trying to trace my own family history I came across other Salkeld families & people & thought it would be a good idea to share the info rather than let it go to waste. As for the results of that research then the best thing to do is look at the website as it is all there in words & pictures. Myself & family live in the village of Belmont, which is about 2 miles from the centre of Durham City, with its Norman Cathedral & Castle in the North East of England. My family in the North East all come from a Coal Mining background dating back to about 1855 and before that the villages of Soulby & Crosby Ravensworth in the old County of Westmoreland where the main occupation of my ancestors would have been that of Shoemakers. What about your own family would it have Cumbrian or Westmorland connections? I regularly check out your own website nice to see somebody else having a go at that sort of thing keep up the good work. Best Wishes. From David Salkeld, Washington, U.S.A. Great job on the site!! We live along the coast, south of Bellingham, on a place called Samish Island. Our son, Craig, is a regional manager for Kinko's, and lives south of us, near a town called Arlington. My grandfather was Thomas Joiner Salkeld, born in Blue Mound, Kansas. He then moved to New Mexico to cowboy for a while, then on to Washington State to log. My family has mostly stayed in the State of Washington. I teach high school math, my wife, Leslie, teaches Math Ed at Western Washington College, Bellingham. From Susan Salkeld-Neighbors, California, U.S.A. I am from SW Washington State, now living in Santa Barbara, California. My grandfather, Thomas Joiner Salkeld came west from Kansas (family originally from Pennsylvania and England). My father, Clarence Lester Salkeld and two brothers, David and Douglas, all live in Washington. For my Chicano Studies class, we each had to put together a personal family history, so here is my Dad's side of the family, recent to history: Father Clarence Lester Salkeld-living (88 years old), Granfather: Thomas Joiner Salkeld-born Blue Mound, Kansas 1846; his father: James Ellison Salkeld-born Blue Mound, Kansas 1808; his father: Thomas Salkeld of Pittsburg PA-born 1783; his father: Peter Salkeld-born 1755; his father: John Salkeld-born 1709, Chester PA;his father: John Salkeld-born 1672, married Agness Powley of England. Lived in Chester, PA; his father: Thomas Salkeld; his father: John Salkeld of Goboroo(sp?) England. From Gillian Salkeld, Sydney, Australia As the story goes "There was a Captain Salkeld who fought in a duel. He killed the other man, then fled from England in his own ship to Jamaica, where he married a Jamaican Princess." Sounds pretty good to me, but unfortunately I do not believe this story which has been passed down for the last 5 generations, with a few alterations along the way, I would think. In my search for this "Captain Salkeld" I have found a few things but nothing that identifies who this man was. My 3xgreat grandfather James Salkeld was born in Jamaica in 1792. He had two brothers, one called Edward the other I am still to find. James' father returned to England with two of his sons, one of them James. James married Franced Dand on November 19, 1825 in Wigton, Cumberland , England. James and Frances had four children, Mary Ann (1827-?), John (1830), William James (1832-1908), and Eleanor (1834-1855) Any information on the above people would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have. From John Barry Salkeld, Newcastle On Tyne, England Hi my name is John Barry Salkeld. I was born in Dinnington Village, Northumberland, now in the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear. I am married to Kathleen Salkeld (nee Trainer). We have three children, John Allan, Susan Angela and Joanne Marion. I worked as a painter and decorator, but now I work as a video editor doing Pop Videos. I have one granddaughter who is 3 years old and I am going to be a grandfather again in May (2000). My parents are Leslie Norman Salkeld who was born in Hazelrigg Village in 1920, who was a serving Commando in the RAF in the Second World War. He met Marion when he was stationed at RAF Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire. They married in 1945. I have two brother's and three sister's. One of my brother's is in the RAF. From Jim Salkeld, North Carolina, U.S.A. My branch of the family didn't get started in the States until my great-uncle George traveled back to England from his home in California, and returned with his younger brother Thomas, my grandfather. That, according to the Cabin Passenger List for the "City of Liverpool", was in February, 1893. That would have made him 18 years old, since his birth certificate indicates he was born 9 December 1874, to Samuel & Mary Hannah Salkeld (nee Todhunter), of 36 Mill Road, Everton, District of West Derby, County of Lancaster. He remained on Long Island, New York, and at the age of 23 married Mary Ann (Minnie) Van Houghton. There were seven children; John, Thomas (my father), Mary, Lenora, Esther, Louise, Minnie, and Hannah, all deceased. My father married Virginia Ann Brown of Fishersville, Virginia, and had six children. The oldest, a daughter Virginia, died as an infant. The rest; Thomas Arthur (1924-1981), George Wilbur (1928-), James Peter(me)(1932-), Clifford Frederick (1940-), and Vivian Louise (1944-) live in New York, Florida, and North Carolina. Thomas was retired from the Nassau County Police Department(New York) and living in Waynesboro, Virginia when he passed away. At age 67, I am retired from managing the computer systems division at a Long Island, N.Y., public utility. My wife, Helen, is retired from a health plan in New York. We have two children, a son, James Jr, of Long Island, N.Y., and a married daughter Patti Ann, and grandson, in Albany, N.Y. My wife and I are presently residing in Hendersonville, North Carolinia where we continue to motorcycle on our Goldwing. We both do voluntee work; my wife at the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of the U.S., and I at the County Sheriff's Department. I'm also an avid gun person, collect die-cast cars (of sorts), write some verse, play with this computer, and am currently building an HO train setup in the basement. In my free time I sleep. Whatever you can glean from this for the site is yours for the taking. In any case, it's great to see the clan coming together, if only over the internet. Keep up the good work. It does us all an inestimable service. From Penny Salkeld, Alberta, Canada We live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We have three daughters: Brittany 24 who is just finishing her Masters at Penn State University in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., Haley 21, and Erica 18. My husband's name is Eric Salkeld, and I am Penny. There are quite a few Canadian Salkelds. They all stem from the Martha tree, I think. Most of our immediate relatives live in western Canada, but I believe they came from the Ontario connection. Nice to read about the American side of the family. From Carlos Salkeld, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. My name is Carlos A. Salkeld and I live in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, just north of Phildelphia. I am a Credit Manager for Cornerstone Family Services. I am originally from Lima, Peru, coming to the United States on March 21, 1991. My ancestors are from Cumberland, England. I have the family tree back to Frederick Salkeld who immigrated to Peru from New Orleans, U.S.A. and I believe died in London, England. From Jane Salkeld, Ringwood, England I live in Ringwood which is in the New Forest, a National Park in the UK, full of wild ponies, deer, donkeys and lots of Pubs! A wonderful place to live, full of history and only 10 miles from the Coast. My Mum, Joyce, lives in Salisbury, Wiltshire (8 miles from Stonehenge) which is about 20 miles from Ringwood. My dad died in 1979 (Albert Victor Salkeld) he served in the 2nd World War in Singapore and Burma and witnessed the surrender of the Japanese. I have two sisters, Christine and Diane (one widowed and the other married with three kids and two grandkids and living in London and Rochester, Kent). I have a degree in Photography and now work in Marketing. From Kristine Salkeld, California, U.S.A. My name is Kristine Salkeld. I'm a 34 year old San Francisco, California native. I have three older sisters, Barbara, Sandra, Jamie and two younger brothers, Jimmy and Eric. My dad is James Salkeld and my mother in Lanet Salkeld. My dad was born in New York and grew up in Michigan. My sister Barbara and I are going to the United Kingdom for a visit in May. Although Salkeld is a very uncommon name in the United States, I hear that it is quite common over in Wales. I am told that it is a Welsh name in fact. I would love to find out more about my ancestors... I just thought I'd email you to let you know that there are more of us "Salkelds" out here in California. From John Salkeld, Carlisle, England My father is Eric Salkeld(DOB 18/2/44), father of three sons. Married to Roslyn (DOB 24/8/47). They live in Morton Park, Carlisle, Cumbria, England. My self, John (DOB 11/12/70) the youngest son married to Yvonne in 1994 - have one son Kieran John Salkeld (DOB 18/7/98) From D.R. Salkeld, British Columbia, Canada Hi, I have just recently moved (to Briitsh Columbia from Hong Kong) so some of my stuff is still in boxes. My name is D.R. Salkeld and I am an airline pilot (Captain for Cathay Pacific). I am a Canadian and I first started flying commercially as a bush pilot in Canada's north country. When I first came across Salkeld Lake (Uranerz Mining had a camp there that we used to service) I was intrigued as to how it had derived the name Salkeld Lake. I wrote to the government of Canada. The gov't wrote back advising that it was named after Constable Hudson Salkeld of the NWMP(North West Mounted Police) who patrolled the area (I still have the original letter but would have to dig it out of a box to remember the exact dates e.g. years that he patrolled it). Because Hudson Salkeld is my father's uncle(my Great Uncle) I decided to send him a copy of the letter. He was quite surprised as no one had ever told him that there was a lake named after him. I used to correspond with Great Uncle Hudson because he still had an interest in the Northwest Territories and the fact that I was flying up there (he had moved to the States lived near Los Angeles). We got a chuckle out of the whole thing because my uncle Hudson told me that the gov't records were wrong and that he did not patrol that area during whatever years were stated in the letter. However, he did patrol a very extensive area for many, many years in both the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territory. Hudson passed away a few years ago. I was in Los Angeles at the time of his death and in fact Hudson & I had made arrangements to spend that Christmas together (although he passed away prior to Christmas). Regards, D.R. Salkeld From Marie Clare Salkeld, Liverpool, England My name is Marie Clare Salkeld. I am very interested in my family tree and would be happy to hear from anyone who could help me. Thank you for your time, Marie Clare Salkeld From Devery Salkeld, British Columbia, Canada My first name is Dev (short for Devery), middle name is Robert. I have two sons, Matt and Drayton and a daughter, Jessa. My mom and dad are Bob and Jessie Salkeld. I have an Aunt Shirley Salkeld and a cousin Tim & his wife Sonia Salkeld. They have three children, Joseph, William and Katie Salkeld. I have two sisters, Kay & Linda. Kay is married, but Linda is still a Salkeld. I grew up in Saskatchewan & there were some Salkelds who lived about 30-40 miles away who were not relatives. From James B. Salkeld, California, U.S.A. My home (is) here in Petaluma, California(35 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 43 miles north of San Francisco). I have resided here for the last 36 years after travelling world over having found Sonoma County akin to heaven right here on earth. I own my own business, which is buying, repairing and reselling of used offset printing and bidery equipment. I also export machines to Mexico and Guatemala. My wife, Lanet Ann Salkeld and I have been married since June of 1961 and raised 4 daughters and 2 sons. We lost our oldest son to a motorcycle accident in 1986 at age 17. My father, Charles Bradford Salkeld was born and raised in the central part of Michigan, and died at age 47 in February 1963. My mother, Eveline Sylvia Salkeld died in April of 1992. Hope this helps out, ...bye, Jim Salkeld From Jennifer Salkeld-Nelson, New Jersey, U.S.A. I never had the opportunity to know the Salkelds prior to my father, Harry Douglas Salkeld III, but to the best of my knowledge we are from the New Jersey/New York area for at least another generation prior to HD Salkeld, senior. From Jock Salkeld, Verdun, Australia Thank you for the email, I got it and just sat there gazing in wonderment at all the Salkelds out there, I had no idea there were so many! Traveling the world at the moment but originally from Verdun, South Australia, Australia. Darryl Salkeld is from the Nebraska Salkelds I think but each time I go back into the Rite-Way Store in Newberg he is either flat out or not to be seen. I will pass on the website if I see him again.
