Proservice Prefolds are the basis of our diapering - on the left is a Regular sized 4x8x4, on the right is a Newborn 4x8x4 (which fit Mackenzie for about 5-6 months). Prefolds can be folded in thirds and put in a velcro wrap, or folded and pinned, or folded and held closed with a Snappi or Diaper Clips. We use a Snappi, and are very happy with the performance - we don't have to pin (but do on occasion), and yet Mackenzie can run around without a cover or use a snap cover without a problem.
This is a JennyOh, a WAHM diaper - the middle soaker layer is attached, but folds out for faster drying. Jenny makes fantastic diapers with plastic snaps, recycled towels and recycled baby blankets. They are absorbant, cute, and have wonderful work-womanship! To be honest, I reach for these first!
ABC Stitches is another WAHM company - Karen uses new or recycled flannel and terry and plastic snap tape. The middle soaker layer unfolds for faster drying. The outer diaper part has no soaker other than the attached pad. I love the design on this - it is my fastest-drying diaper, and once you fold the soaker pad in place, it is very easy to use. And I'm a plaid-lover!
This is a Mother Ease Popolino or One Size diaper (unbleached). The bottom picture has the optional snap-in liner. They are well made diapers, and pretty absorbant, although the company has some odd business practices. I was sold on these diapers until i bought some of the WAHM dipes. I do really like their stretch terry, however.
This is a Kooshies Diaper Basic - it has cute prints and velcro, but is not particularly absorbant. We got some at a resale shop, and use them for quick changes while out. Kooshies (or Kushies) does make other, more absorbant diapers, but we have not yet tried them, as they are all made with Velcro rather than snaps.
These are what you will find at chain stores across the country. They are useless for routine diapering. We have 1 dozen for emergencies and for double diapering at night. They have a thin side layer and a rayon/poly "soaker" pad in the middle. If for some reason you cannot purchase through mail-order, make sure you purchase Diaper Service Quality Diapers. The extra money is well spent.
