Though a little less "basic" than the others, Ms. Croom's book is valuable in that it explains a bit about how state and federal records were put together and are stored. It offers a good overall picture of doing genealogy research, plus offers some great record-keeping tips, including sample record sheets. I myself have used some of her great tips for organizing paperwork, and that alone has been worth buying the book!
The Genealogist's Companion and Sourcebook

Ms. Croom's second book is really a valuable tool, once you get very involved in genealogy research. I found resources in this book I didn't know existed. It offers many ideas for getting out of a dead end in a search. Well worth your time and money!
