Evelyn Nesbit was born in Tarentum, a small outside Pittsburgh, into a young middle-class family. Her mother was a gentlewoman, and her father a lawyer who was on his way up to a respectable place in his profession. The future looked bright when a second child was born (Howard) in 1886. But when Evelyn was eight years old, her world took a turn that would send her on a downhill slide she would never quite recover from: her father died, leaving his wife in debt. Paying his debtors meant that their standard of living changed immediately and drastically.
