Isham married in Jackson Co. MS., about 1816 to Rebecca Wells, daughter of Henry Wells and Ellen Stewart. She was born about 1798 in Georgia.
The Copeland family lived near the state line in Alabama, and some state just below Citronelle in Mobile Co. AL.
Some twenty years ago while researching the Young family, I visited Young families who lived South of the Mobile Airport one Sunday afternoon. I was told before I ever went into this area that is was a bad section to visit and vistors were not welcome. There was one way in and one way out. I just could not believe these individuals were that bad. I took my chances and was never treated more kindly and welcome by any family.
The whole afternoon was spent listening about the YOUNGS and Gangs, one being the Copeland Gang. This place where the Youngs lived was one of the places that the gangs lived and hid out. The old folks did not mind talking about their ancestors who had belonged to gangs, the only bad thing my fingers could not write fast enough to keep up with the tales.
Isham Copeland died in Mobile Co. AL., in 1857 and his wife Rebecca Wells Copeland died in Mobile Co. about three years later. Rebecca Copeland received a letter from her son James in 1858 from New Augusta Perry County Mississippi where he was hanged. From this letter he blames his mother for his being a bad man. "Quote", my dear Mother, had you given me the proper advice when young, I would now perhaps be doing well. His mother knew as a young boy that James had stolen a pocket knife from a neighbor, yet she spared the rod and punishment was not administered and this is what James is referring to.
