BLECHLE's ;
Thanks to Reverend Carl Callier, C.M.. His Book titled The Family Tree of Agnes Conrad Blechle and The Baden Connection Between Baden Germany is very informational on the surnames of BLECHLE, CALLIER, VOLTZ, MEYER, HIRT, PONDER, BUTZ, KIRN, SPULER and 17 other related German Families. Godfried and Hugo Blechle arrived in New Orleans January 6 1832 aboard the ship Tallahassee from L'Havre, France. Godfried Blechle was born in Zusenhofen, Baden, Germany. He traveled up the Mississippi River to Apple Creek, Missouri.
THE BLECHLE'S IN PERRY COUNTY, Mo.
From all the records we have, only two Blechle's came from Baden to Perry County. They are: 1) Godfried (Gottfried) Blechle, who, as a 25 year old bachelor, arrived in New Orleans Jan. 6, 1832 aboard the ship Tallahassee from L'Havre, France. 2) and his nephew, Dominic Blechle, son of his deceased older sister, 20 years younger than Godfried. So far. there is no record of Dominic in Perry Co. until his marriage, so we do not know when he arrived.
There is another Blechle, who is an ancestor of many Perry County Blechle’s _ Hugo Blechle. He was born in 1830 in Baden in the city of Renchen. His Meyer grandparents and their entire family came on the same ship as Godfried Blechle. Hugo is listed last under the Meyer family as 2 years old. He must have been the daughter of Cecilia Meyer. In 1832 Cecilia Meyer married Jacob Nelson in Perry Co. They had a daughter, Anna Nelson, born June 14, 1833. Jacob Nelson then died and on June 19, 1834 Cecilia Meyer married Godfried Blechle. Hugo was given the Blechle surname, while Anne kept her Nelson surname.
This is not guess work. Godfried Blechle in his sworn and witnessed will of July 13. 1871 names his 5 living children and his stepson Hugo and his stepdaughter Anne (nee Nelson) Hemann (her married name). If Hugo is Godfried's stepson. he is not his natural son and must be the son of his wife. Since Godfried only had one wife, Hugo must be the son of Cecilia Meyer. We do not know who Hugo's natural father was. Giving one's surname to a stepchild was a very common practice among all the families in Perry Co.- English, French and German.
This results in the following, slightly complicated, relationships among the three above Blechle family lines: 1) Both Hugo Blechle & Anna Nelson are half-brother and halfsister to each other and to the natural children of Godfried Blechle, because they all had the same mother, Cecilia Meyer. 2) Dominic Blechle is a full first cousin to all of Godfried's children; their children are second cousins and so on. Dominic Blechle and his descendants have no belationship to Hugo Blechle & Anne Nelson and their descendants.
With this all established as clear as crystal, we can start taking up these three B1ech1e lines, starting with Godfried Blechle. However, since Godfried's step-children are older, it is only logical to take up: A. Godfried Blechle's step-children. B. Godfried's 6 natural children. C. Godfried's nephew Dominic Blechle.
GOTTFRIED (GODFRIED) BLECHLE & CECILIA MEYER
Gottfried Blechle's parents were Gabriel Blechle, b. Mar. 23, 1765. d. Nov. 10. 1829 in Zusenhofen; Occupation a joiner and Maria Anna (Marianne) Volz,
b. 1777; for her ancestry and details, see the Volz family, Neither parent came to the U. S.
In the fall of 1831, Godfried sailed with many other neighboring families to New Orleans, La., then up the river to Perry County. There are two petitions from May 1832 of German Badish families, which are kept in the Perry County Courthouse. Thanks to the Perry Co. Historical Society, Spring 1988 edition of Perry Co. Heritage pp. 39 - 42 for this information.
