William married Rachel in Pittsylvania County, VA. and started a family in the area of Potters Creek, a tributary of Pigg River which is near Sandy Level, where Rachel's father, William Witcher, is burried.
Not a lot is known about this family after they came to Cabell County, Va, about 1809.
It appears William died shortly after they arived here around 1811 or after.
My GGG Grandmother, Nancy Morrison (wife of Matthew Knight), was born around that time. William does not appear in the 1820 Cabell County Census, only Rachel and two children appear so William had died before that time. The children listed was a female age 0 to 10 (This would be Nancy born 1812) and a male child between age of 10 and 16, this would be James Albert)
Many Morrison researchers do not accept that James Albert and Nancy
are the children of Willam James and Rachel but there they are in the census. James Albert death record gives Rachel Morrison as his mother.
Rachel Witcher was the daughter of William Witcher of Pittsylvania, County, VA. At this time, I know nothing further about Rachel or when she died.
James and Rachel lived at(according to her G Granddaughter Adalaide Knight b. 1872)on the head of Merritts Creek on the ridge between Bowens Creek and Beach Fork. Today this is called Hickory Ridge.
