Junior Girl Scout Troop #588
What We're Up To

August 1999

We had our Back To Girl Scouts picnic in August. It was great to see everyone again and we got to choose our troop crest (Falling Stars) and our troop t-shirt design. We also started work on our troop flag with each girl making her own miniature name design banner to place on the flag. Very creative, girls! We had hot dogs and made ice cream in a bag (and found out we needed gloves to shake the ice cream in spite of the 95 degree temperatures!)

September 1999

Our first meeting with "executive" decisions! We chose our officers who will remain in place until December, giving everyone a chance to try her hand at leadership. We also made our final decisions on which badges we will focus on this year and started the inital planning stages for a couple of them. We talked about our Junior Aide plans and introduced the Troop Store. You may link to our Junior Bucks page to see how we earn money to spend at the store. After all this planning and paperwork, we were introduced to the wonderful world of SWAPS.

At our second September meeting, we held our Investiture and Rededication ceremony where we received our troop crests and our Early Bird registration patches. We also had a Friendship Mix snack (each girl brings something good to add to the mix, just as each brings something good of herself to Girl Scouts) to celebrate our old and new friends in Scouting this year. We made more SWAPS of course and made our shopping and packing plans for our camping trip coming up next month! We will also be working on our Looking Your Best badges next month.

October 1999

Our first October meeting started us out on camping skills. We made dunk bags and mini first-aid kits and had Edible Fires for snacks. This gave us a good chance to talk about fire safety and the correct way to set up a fire. We passed out our songbooks tonight and practiced a few songs so we are ready for a campfire. (For only 8 girls, we are loud!) We shared more of the postcards we have received from our postcard circle as well as a request for our troop to contribute to a millenium album from a troop in Louisiana.

At our second October meeting, we had our troop Halloween party! We made mosaic candle holders, ate a little gross food and yummy cookies, and played Murder. We're ready for our camping trip!

This month we also had a field trip to a hairstyling school where we had hair makeovers and nails done by students. We had our campout at Mandy's farm - lots of fun, especially our "Sparkle Party". The morning after the campout, we gathered for more "Looking Your Best" and made glitter gel, lip gloss, and facial masks. We talked about healthy foods and healthy body images. October has been a busy month!

November 1999

Our first meeting in November had us planning our Junior Aide activities. We will help Troop 299 earn the Outdoor Dabbler badge in January and we worked in groups to plan the stations they will complete for the badge requirements.

At our second meeting, we filmed the video we will use to teach the Brownies to "Dress For The Weather" - the video is sure to become a classic for the ages. We also made a few Thanksgiving and Christmas SWAPS, sent a care package to Ryan, talked about our Christmas service project, and decided on our booth for Rendezvous! We also reviewed our growing postcard collection - just three more months to Thinking Day!

December 1999

We had our troop Christmas celebration! We made "Birthday Bags" for a local domestic abuse shelter and played games for Junior Bucks - everyone had lots to spend!
