16+ Reasons to Spay and Neuter
In a very short period of time Millie and Jezebelle produced 14 puppies. Millie was housed with a male Basset and then given up by the owners when she became pregnant. Jezebelle was allowed to run free through the country side and was consequently bred at tender age of 6-8 months. Jezebelle was in such poor physical condition that one of her puppies immediately died. Additionally, due to poor breeding another puppy died (Homer) from a congenital defect at 8 weeks of age. Luckily, Millie was rescued early in pregnancy, provided with good health care, food and nurturing and all 9 of her puppies survived.
Tribute to Homer
Four little paws to heaven have gone
Your time one earth was not very long.
You will find some to guide you
the old and the strong.
Some have been there awhile
and some not very long.
Oh Homer you are well now.
so run, play and bay.
We all plan to see you
at the Bridge some fine day.
Please know that we loved you
and prayed the hard way.
Since God shared you with us
this short, little time.
He surely has a place for
those four little paws of yours.

Developmentally Homer lagged behind his littermates. Eventually, he was separated out of the pack and given love and care around the clock. Unfortunately Homer's condition did not improve and he went to the bridge on January 30, 1999. Many times poor breeding practices lead to congenital defects which may be deadly. It is important to spay and neuter your pets so that these deleterious traits are not passed on to subsequent generations.
