Henderson Stone Works - (entered 8 Nov 08)

My husband, Ray and I have been building a house (lot 30) and have had good and bad services.  I would like to endorse several companies we have used in case anyone else is looking for good and reasonable work.

First is Henderson stone works whom I heartily recommend.  The work was excellent.  Mr. Henderson was reliable, reasonable and flexible.  The phone is 580-1780. -  Ann Reinicke

Electrical Service, Inc. (ESI) - (entered 8 Nov 08)

The owner, Kurt Jimmo, has bent over backwards when needed to help us get temporary power, and get several outlets live before our inspection.  He had the flexibility to come when needed.  All his supplies are top of the line and he was very pleasant to work with.  His price was much better than many bids we received.  He was always very prompt to return our calls if we had any questions or needed him for anything.  His office phone is 758-5999. - Ann Reinicke

Joe Hayden, Plumbing - (entered 8 Nov 08)

For plumbing services we would recommend Joe Hayden.  Yes, that's right, our own "Joe the Plumber"!  He came in after our first plumber had to quit for personal reasons, when many others just came and said they wouldn't touch the job after someone else had started.  He gave us a very reasonable price and has been very diligent in getting the job done.  He works for another company during the day, so he does jobs after hours and weekends.  He accomplished more in three weekends than the previous plumber did in three months.  He is very reliable and his work is excellent.  His phone is 529-7538.  - Ann Reinicke

Reyes Insulation and Drywall - (entered 8 Nov 08)

I am very pleases with the service we received from this company.  Mr. Reyes has been very prompt and reliable.  His prices were very reasonable.  His workers were pleasant and even cleaned up after they were finished.  They came in and did our whole house in one day and you didn't even know they were there until you saw the job had been completed.  His phone number is 271-1247. - Ann Reinicke

Rock's Marine Construction  and Moore Marine Consulting, Inc. - (entered 27 Oct 08)

We recently had a dock built on our property by Rock's Marine Construction and are very pleased with the results.  This is the same company that built the new Mallard Bay crabbing pier and came highly recommended.  When first I contacted them concerning the planned job, they referred me to Mr. Nathan Moore of Moore Marine Consulting, Inc., who designed the pier and shepherded the paperwork for approval of the project  through the county.  The procedure took about a month, but immediately after it was completed, Rock's Construction started work and finished in less than a week.  We couldn't be happier with the results.  It was quality work at a fair price. - Scott McGuire.

Household Maintenance and Repairs

One-Whay Sanitation - (entered 21 Oct 08)

We have used One Whay Sanitation for septic tank pump-out twice now.  They were on time and pleasant to deal with.  It was interesting to read in an article in tha Rappahannock Record (pg. B7, Oct. 18, 2008)  that they are leading the way in recycling  septic waste into clean water and compost.  This company has a lot to recommend it. - Bill Bracker

Franklin Clock Repair - (entered 30 Aug 08)

You don't find many places nowadays where someone will repair a wind-up clock, the kind with springs and gears, but no batteries.  Here, you'll find it.  Franklin Clock Repair is located at 11051 Richmond Rd., Haynesville, VA.  (Translation, it's on the north side of highway 360 between Warsaw and Callao).  The phone is 804-333-3533.  Lou Clarke, the proprietor repairs all types of clocks as well as sewing machines.  We've had three clocks into the shop for cleaning and repair, one of which was a real challenge to get going and keep going.  The rates are reasonable and, if you're lucky, you might persuade Mr. Clarke to break out one of the acoustic guitars he has built.  I wonder who sets all those clocks each day to chime at the same time. - Scott and Mary McGuire

Restaurants

"Good Eats" Cafe - An Understatement - (entered 30 Aug 08)

Recently, for the first time since we've owned property at Mallard Bay, we went to dinner at "Good Eats Cafe", a converted gas station on highway 202 at the Kinsale turnoff, about 5 miles north of Callao.  From it's name, you might expect to encounter an overweight cook wearing a stained apron with a lit unfiltered cigarette permanently attached to his lower lip, selling a "blue plate special" that resembles nothing as much as yesterday's warmed-over dog food.  No such thing.  The meal we had was terrific.  We went on Thursday, which is always Prime Rib Night.  It was delicious and at $21.00 came with beautifully seasoned mixed vegetables and potatoes. Appetizer, main course and wine for two came to around $70, including tip.  We will go back.  "Good Eats" takes reservations only for parties of eight or more.  For fewer than that, it's first come, first served.  They're open from April through November, Thursday through Sunday.  The doors open at 5:00pm, a convenient time for folks who don't want to drive home in the dark. - Scott and Mary McGuire
