Genealogy & Other References
This list constitutes the lists of references that I have found over the years. It is not a Cyndi's List, by any means. (I still find that very useful).
I have added my own ranking to each site according to how often I personally reference the site. Such a rank does not constitute an opinion of good or bad, by the way. It just indicates my frequency of personal use.

Digitalarkivet - I personally find this to be an incredibly useful resource for Norway. I have been using it for years and is usually one of the first places I go. Census, and many other records are there, online. Digitalarkivet in English is an option.
The Bygdelag Page - Fairly good reference. You need to know your geography.
O.Rygh Old Norwegian Farm Names - This is fairly useful. The last name of many Norwegians is derived from the farm name. Their ancestors may not have spelled it the same way. This resolves those variant spelling problems.
Rootsweb Norwegian Resources - Good list to browse
Norway List - Good collaboration
Norwegian American Dictionary - One of the best I've seen online
Valdres Samband Genterms - References used commonly on birth records, etc.
Danish dialect in the 1300-1700s - Useful option for some of the old languages
Valdres (region)
- Churches in Valdres (Ola Braaten reference is interesting to me)
- Døpte Aurdal 1842-1932 - Deaths in Aurdal
- Heimeside for Familien Bergene
- Index Valdres Aktiviteter - Fagernes - Aurdal - Tisleia - Vestre Slidre
- Publications of 'Valdres' litterature

Norway is not an isolated people with an isolated history. Perhaps the common people tended to stay close to their birthplace in the last 1000 years, but the royal vikings kept the peace and made treaties through intermarriages with others in Sweden, Denmark, Flanders (modern Belgium and Netherlands), Normandy, English/Scotch Isles, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sicily (Italy), and to the east in Poland, and all the way down to Kiev.
