John Travolta was born on February 18, 1954.
The youngest of six children in Englewood, New Jersey. **Brother Joey and sister Ellen are also well known actors. * The Travoltas encouraged creativity in their children. His father built a theater in the basement of their home and nightly shows were the norm. |

John performed in school shows and also in local dinner theater.

In addition to learning his craft in an actors workshop, John was fortunate to take dance lessons from Fred Kelly, the brother of one of our greatest dancers, Gene Kelly. John Travolta never received a high school diploma. John quit school at 16 to pursue a career in acting. John was cast in the touring company of "Grease" and on Broadway in 1973 in "Over Here". |

Back in the mid-70s the TV series "Welcome Back Kotter" was one of the most popular of the day. John Travolta's character, Sweathog, ** Vinnie Barbarino commanded the screen every time he walked into ascene. ** He quickly became a teen idol. John Travolta was cast in the TV movie "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" and won critical acclaim for his performance. John was no longer thought of as just the cute Sweathog. It was his fame and following in "Kotter" that led him to the big screen in "Saturday Night Fever". John Travolta had done other films and TV movies, but this was his movie. Other films followed, but none with the same impact. In 1989, "Look Who's Talking" returned him to a welcoming audience. This was followed by two sequels in 1990 and 1993. |
John Travolta's career has been on the rise ever since his 1994 sensation "Pulp Fiction". Then a whirlwind of films followed, starting with "Get Shorty". |
