Fourteen year old Serena saves a black cat from a crowd of bratty kids and finds herself recruited by Luna as a warrior against the evil Negaverse, an alternate dimension rules by Queen Beryl and dedicated to draining the energy from humans and ultimatly destroying the Earth. There's only one problem: Serena doesn't want to be a superheroine. She's perfectly happy snacking, shopping, and hanging out at the local arcade.
Thrwon into battle against a Negamonster, Sailor Moon has no idea what to do. Fortunatly, the first of her allies, the dashing Tuxedo Mask, appears to distract the monster with his trademark roses and gave Luna time to tell Sailor Moon that her tiara has the per to disintigrate monsters. Sailor Moon gradually grows more confidnet at usig her powers and discovers the four inner planet Scouts: computer genius Sailor Mercury (Amy), who can create and icey fog to confuse monsters; nasty tempered priestess-in-training Sailor Mars (Ray), who can fry enemies with fireballs or stun them with anti-evil charms; karate expert and master cook Sailor Jupiter (Lita), who controls lightning; and finally the ekusive Sailor Venus (Mina), who has been operating as "Sailor V" along with her own cat, Artemis, and attacks with her crescent beam.
The sailor Scouts face off against assorted monsters, and their controllers, the four Negaverse generals. Fortunatly fro the Scouts, the four generals are prone to fighting among themselves and mroe of them fall victim to internal feuding, or thier Queen's hasty temper, than to the Scouts. Things cometo a head when the third general, Zoicite, uses the seven rainboy crystals everyone has been looking for as an excuse to settle the score with Tuxedo Mask, whom she loathes. In the ensuing battle Tuxedo Mask (who proves to be that same smart-mouthed guys who's been calling Serena "Meatball Head" and generally making her life difficult during the entire first season) is stabbed in the back by Zoicite. In shock, Sailor Moon unconsciously calls on the rainboy crystals to merge nad become the Silver Impyrean Crystal that once defeated Queen Beryl. The crystal unlocksher memories of her past life as Princess of the Moon Kingdom, as well as making her realize that Darian, her present-day nemesis, was her one true love inthe distant past. Just as well, since Darian is quickly kidnapped by Quenn Beryl and brainwashed into becoming her servant.
Finally, as Queen Beryl brgins to prepare for her invasion, the Sailor Scouts set out to put an end to things. One by one the other Scouts are eliminated bye Beryl's personal hit squad unitl only Sailor Moon is left to face her. Beryl sets the hypnotized Darian to kill Sailor Moon, but his love for her is ultimately stronger than Beryl's hypnosis. He manages to break free and save Sailor Moon, but dies of massive injuries sustained inthe battle, promising that he'll find a way to reutrn to her somehow. Serena summons all the power of the Moon Princess and, with the spirits of the other Scouts backing her, vaporizes Beryl. With the last of her strength, she uses the Crystal to restore them all. The Scouts and Darian are returned to Earth, but none of them remember their pasts or each other.
However, it isn't long before Luna is forced to restore Serena's memory so she can fight a pair of mysterious aliens who have recnetly arrived on Earth and are up to the Negaverse's old energy-draining tricks. The aliens, Alan and Ann, have disguised themselves as humans and enrolled in Serena's school. alan quickly decides Serena is the girl of his dreams and Ann is soon chasing after Darian (much to Serena's horror). amy, Mina, LIta, and Ray have hteir memories restored, and the Scouts havea new ally in the poetic, arabian-costumed Moonlight Knight, but Sailro Moon's tiara is failing her and the other Scout's powers often aren't enough. whe her tiara's failure allows the other scouts to be captured by a monster,s he aquires the even more powerful Moon Scepter. One by one hte other Scouts learn to use new, sstronger powers. In thier final confronatation with the aliens, Sailor Moon learns that the pair are stealing energy to save the sentient tree that their own lives depend on, but are accidentally poinsoning it with negative energy whenit really needs their love. Sailor Moon heals both the tree nad Ann and Alan and sends them off into space to find a home of their own. During the batle, she also learns that hte Moonlight KNight is really a projection of the part of Darian's mind that remembers his past and still needs to protect her (making Darian the only perosn we can think of who can be rude to is own subconscious mind--he's been known to refer to his alter ego as a nutball!). Whenhis memories return, the Moonlight Knight returns to his place inside Darian.
The next season brings a whole host of new problems for Serena, starting with the appearence of a pink-haired little girl who falles onto her head and demands the Empyrean Crystal. The girl, Rini, is being chased by a group of people from the Negamoon, and has a habit of projecting a distinctive "moonbeam" flare of enrgy when upset. She hypnotizes Serena's family and moves in with them, and proceeds to do everything in her power to make Serena's life miserable. But soomething even worse follows: Daran, tormeted by dreams telling him that being near Serena puts him in danger, breaks up with her and refues to have anything to do with her, although Tuxedo Mask still appears to aid Sailor Moon.
The Scouts battle the Four Sisters, Catzy, Bertie, Prisma, and Avery, and their leader, Rubeus with their upgraded pwers nad eventually convert the sisters from their evil ways. However, Rubeus is plotting revenge, and it appears that the group comes from the future and are part of the invading forces who have Rini's parents under wiege in their city of Crystal Tokyo. Rini has come back to the past in hopes that Sailor Moon's crystal can save her mother, the queen, and she learns that Serena and her friends are the Sailor Scouts.
At this point, with the Negamoon attacking Tokyo in both its past nad presnet, and Serena in agony over Darian, the company stopped translating Sailor Moon. Dont you HATE it when that happens?
Infuriated by the defection of the four sisters, Rubeus plans to destroy the Scouts. He is unwittingly aided by Rini, who decides Serena doesn't deserve to be Sailor Moon and steals her transformation locket. The other scouts are lured into a trap and captured by Rubeus. Serena goes to fave him alone, but is followed by Rini. In a showdown aboard his ship, Serena forces him into a stalemate and Rini finds a way to free the others. Rubeus's appeal to the future for help is ignored, and Sailor Moon finishs him off.
He is quickly replaced by Esmeraude, another member of the Dark Moon heirarchy. Esmeraude is intent on impressing hte Dark Moon's leader, Prince Dimand, and does her best to raise Deak Energy in vatious parts of the city, but is constantly thwarted by the Couts. Menawhile, Serena begins to have the smae fream Darian has and ralizes that his apparent coldness is an attempt to protect ehr. She confronts him with it, and they finally afree to face the danger together. Not long afterwards, Rini is convinced to tell them her story and the group agrees to go to the future with her. Their trip through time brings them into contact with Rini's advisor Sailor Pluto, the gaurdian of time (and the first of the Outer Planet Scouts we see). They are attacked along the way by Esmeraude, but she fails to stop them. Their journey is also being watched by Prince Dimand, his brother Saffir, and their mysterious advisor Wiseman. Dimand is obsessed with Crystal Tokyo's Neo-Queen Serenity, and immediately sees a resemblance to her in Sailor Moon. His interest in her disrurbs both Saffir and Esmeraude.
The first person to greet the Scouts in the furture is a mysterious figure whose voice Darian and Serena recognize from their nightmares. Tuxedo Mask is enrages by all the misery that voice has caused them and attacks. Unfortunatly, he goes straight through the figure, hwo calmly introduces himself as a holographic projection of King Endymion, paralyzed in hte intitial attack. He takes them back to the palace, the only sage place inteh besieged city, and explains the istuation. The palace itself is shielded by a force field generated by the Sailor Scouts of the future, who are the adult forms of the present-day Scouts. The invasion, the king tells them, came right after the mysterious failure of the city's defenses. The queen herslef is in a trance that nothing can wake her from, and only she could use the Empyrean Crystal of the future. Neo-Queen Serenity, in fact, is Serena's future self, just as King Endymion is Darian's. Rini is (you guessed it) their future daughter, a revelation that schocks the Scouts and embarasses Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask horribly.
The discussion is interrupted by Dimand, who has also realized the connection. He manages to kidnap Sailor Moon, although Rini is saved by Tuxedo Mask. She wakes up in the Dark Moon's fortress, in her normal form as Serena,her powers negated by proximity to the Dark Moon's Black Crystal. Prince Dimand appears and informs her that she is his future queen. When Serena attempts to use her crystal to awaken her future self. Her effort fails and the palace is attacked by Esmeraude, turned into a dragon by Wiseman, who seems to have an agenda of his own. Sheis destroyed by Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, but in the confusion Rini runs off and is captured by Wiseman. We learn that the crystal of the future disappeared when Rini took it out of its casing to look at it.
Wiseman warps Rini's memories of her past and convinces her that no one loves her. She becomes corrupted by Dark Energy and transforms into an adult version of herslef called Black Lady. Wiseman sends her into the past to open the gate that will allow the power of the Black Crystal to flood the world. The Scouts, returned to the present, recognize Black Lady as Rini an are reluctant to fight her. Meanwhile, Saffir overhears Wiseman plotting against Dimand and flees into the past with a part of vital to the functioning of hte Black Crystal. He meets up with Prizma, the oldest of the Four Sisters, who has been in love with him for years, and she begins to convince him to change his ways. However, Wiseman and Black Lady catch up with him before ha can tell Dimand what he knows.
The Scouts realize the only chice left is to enter the Gate themselves and fight the Black Crystal at its source. No sooner have they teleported in than Dimand makes off with Sailor Moon again, and makes another try to hypnotizing her into falling in love with him. She resists and he is impressed enough by her strength to begin to listen to what she says. Wiseman appears and declares that they must both die. Dimand injures him, but is killed by a blast meant for Sailor Moon. Wiseman regroups and tries to corrupt Sailor Moon by showing her visions of Darian's rejection of her nad his closeness to Rini, but can't fool her. The real Darian arives in the middle of this and deflects wisman's attack. Wiseman disappears.
Traveling further, they are confronted by Black Lady, who does her best to kill Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon uses the crystal to restore Rini's true memories and restores her to herself. Wiseman returns to attack them, and Sailor Moon goes to face him knowing that using the crystal's full power may kill her. Watching her struggle, Rini desperately wants to help. She begins to cry and one of her tears becomes the future Empyrean Crystal of the future. Rini rushes in to hlep Serena and their combined powers destroy Wiseman.
Saved by the power of the crystal, Serena and Rini reutrn and everyone is transported back to Earth. Rini uses her Time Key to open the door of time, and runs to meet her parents and he future Scouts in front of the restored Crystal Tokyo.
In Sailor Moon R, the Sailor Senshi entered a future world, one with adult problems and intense battles. After all the revelations about Usagi and Mamoru's future, it's easy to forget that our heroines are still just growing up. In Super, our story returns to the present...
The girls are one year older now (15) and in their last year of junior high. It's a critical time for students in Japan and competition to get into the best high schools is very tough. High school is considered the most important part of a Japanese student's education, even more than university.
The girls are doing their best to settle down and lead normal lives, but we all know that won't last for long...
