Improvement is
the collaboration
of Wind Dancer
Production
Group, ABC
(Disney), and
Touchstone
Television. The
show, based on
the comedy of
Tim Allen, is in it's eighth season. H.I. premiered
on September 17, 1991 with "The Pilot". It was
launched intosyndication on September 11, 1995
with a brand new episode entitled "Tanks for the
Memories". The show is taped at the Disney Lot in
Burbank, California at Stage 4. The cast and crew
work five days a week, with a hiatus (entertainment
term for vacation) for a week once a month. On
Monday the entire cast, producers, writers, and
directors of the show meet to read and review the
script in "The War Room" above the audience
bleachers. Monday afternoon and all of Tuesday is
filled with rehearsals and rewrites, without the
cameras. When the "HI" boys aren't rehearsing (the
law requires that young actors can only work 9 1/2
hours a day), they attend school in a special
classroom on the back lot. A test audience of 22
people are brought in for a rehearsal to let the
producers see what "works" and what doesn't (aka a
runthough). After the audience leaves, everyone
meets in the Taylor living room to rework the
script again. Thursday, the camerastape the
rehearsals from five different angles. The show is
taped once in the morning and once at night on
Fridays. At night at around 7:15 it is taped in front
of a live audience. After every taping the entire
cast and crew gather at their private wrap party to
celebrate.
