These are films which have caught the attention of the author's eye over the years. These films exhibit characteristics seldom seen by the vast majority of filmakers in today's society. They break the exploited cliches and the monotony of the expected within plots, while retaining the artistic integrity which the writers so much envision. These films stand out from amongst the rest and though this list will never be complete, it is a small window which looks out into a seldom noticed view...a view revealing originality, intrigue, wit, and the unexpected. They are the views saluted by Oddworld!

Dune
1984
Director: David Lynch
Starring: Kyle MacLachlan, Sean Young, Sting, Jose Ferrer

Based on Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel Dune, this film revels in the battle over a sacred element within the known universe, the Spice Milagne. The Spice extends life, it expands consciousness. With it the folding of space is a reality and who owns it controls the Universe! Thus battle ensues for its control, on the one planet which produces this sacred treasure, the planet known as Dune. Legends, religions, and prophecies tell of a savior who will come and rule the known Universe from his aquisition of the Spice Milagne, and mystery questions who this savior must be and acknowledges who wishes to prevent his awakening! Plots are schemed within plots in this fanfare of astounding storylines, mesmerizing special effects, and thought provoking mysticism which are combined to create one of the best, realistic science fiction films of this century.

Braveheart
1995
Director: Mel Gibson
Starring: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Catherine McCormack, Patrick McGoohan

Based on the actual historic Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace, Mel Gibson both stars and directs this epic saga so worthy of acclaim. The King of England claims Scotland as his own and to breed out the Scots, he proclaims the right of Prima Norte (the right to bed the newlywed wife of a recently married couple) for his governors and nobles upon the Scottish lands they govern. To prevent this from happening to his beloved, William Wallace marries her in secret, yet commits murder upon an English guard who decides to priveledge himself upon her. In turn the English execute his wife bringing Wallace to first execute his revenge and then to fight the English for the freedom of Scotland untill he succeeds or is dead! This powerful story of freedom, vengence, betrayal, love, and the love of power is the most historically enticing film of its class. The historic detail is surpassed by no other film and the action is as real as watching an actual war back in time! Braveheart is what all films should be. With stories of war, passion, and pride, this film brings out that which is best in films...the ability to reach out to the audience and put them in another world both visually and emotionally!

La Femme Nikita
Language: French (English subtitles)
Director: Luc Besson
Starring: Anne Parillaud, Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu, Roland Blanche, Jacques Boudet

The street smart street junkie Nikita is recruited into one of France's secret government organizations against her will. All records of her say she is deceased. Even a tombstone bearing her name is in place and photographs of her funeral are taken atop an empty grave. If she refuses to cooporate with this organization, they promise to fill her grave. She is then put under extensive training to weild the skills of not only a proffesional assasin, but professional government secret agent. They have chosen her due to her street smart instincts and have given her, in a sense, a new chance at life. But the costs are that she must always work for them, her life is theirs, there is no leaving. After training she pursues their missions, given to her only when the time comes. In the meantime she lives her life as normal as possible untill the phone rings asking for Josephine, her covert name. The beautiful Anne Parillaud plays her part as magnificantly and enthusiastically as she looks creating a film which is both intense and provoking. This film was remade on an American set and surprisingly it maintained its originators integrity. The Point of No Return starring the equally beautiful, Bridgette Fonda, is the remake of this highly acclaimed film.
