Chapter 1

I was rushing around the house trying to get ready for my blind date. I was a nervous wreck. I was new in town and barely knew anyone. My next door neighbor took pity on me and was fixing me up with her brother. I'd seen him come around a few times before. He was pretty cute. He seemed really immature though. He was always hanging around with his younger brother who appeared to be about 10 years younger. I shrugged it off. I didn't know anybody and was happy knowing I wouldn't be spending another Saturday night at home. I dreaded going to work on Monday and telling my friends I stayed home. It wasn't that I didn't get asked out, I did. I tried going out on blind dates before but they just never worked out. So here I was going out again. I sat down in front of my vanity and said why bother? I dressed in a black short dress. I wore my long brown hair pinned back between two combs and it hung down my back. I finished applying my make up and checked myself out in a full-length mirror. It's not going to get any better than this, I thought to myself. I didn't even know Nick that well. I'd met him a few times. He was so young though. I was 2 years older than he was. I've always heard Girl's mature much faster. Nick was over 6 feet tall had long hair that was almost to his shoulders. He had the most beautiful blue eyes I'd ever seen. Now his flaws. He had acne, not really bad but sometimes it was awful. He was a little squishy around the mid-section, and he seemed almost childlike at times. I tried to put it out of my head. I didn't want to ruin the evening before he even showed up. Nick was late, he was supposed to be here 10 minutes ago. Well, there is another flaw for you Rachel, I thought to myself. I walked downstairs and poured myself a glass of Diet Pepsi and turned on the TV. About 30 minutes later there was a knock on my door. I got up and answered it. Surprise, guess who? Said Nick. Were you worried? He said next. I let him in and said, no I wasn't worried. He asked if I was ready to go. I just looked at myself and said yes. He was dressed very handsomely. He was wearing black pants with a beige pull over sweater. His hair was slicked back and he was wearing glasses. He opened the door for me and I walked out of my house. I asked where we were going tonight? He said, he and his friends were throwing a party and he thought I'd like to go and meet new people. That sounds nice I said. He helped he up into his Green Expedition and we drove through town and ended up at this huge house in a gated community. It was backed up onto a canal. Wow, was all I could say when we pulled into the driveway. Nick hopped out of the car and ran over to the other side of the truck and helped me out. He just walked into the house and introduced me to 4 guys and their girlfriends. Rachel this is Brian and Annie, nice to meet you I said. This is Howie and Claudia, nice to meet you I said. AJ and Theresa, how are you? This is Kevin and Joanna, I said I think we need name tags. They laughed. Nick said, have a seat I'll be down in a minute. With that he took two steps at a time up the staircase until he disappeared. Brian offered me a drink. I said I'd have a beer, thank you. We were all making small talk. They asked where I was from, I said Maine. My parent's own a very successful lobster boat company. Kevin said, you and Nick must have a lot in common then. I said, why? Nick loves to be on the water, he said. Oh, I didn't even know that. Howie said, it's usually the first think he talks about. I said, well Beej introduced us and this is kind of a blind date. AJ just started laughing. Oh my god, really? This is your first date? I laughed nervously and said yes. Nick came bouncing down the stairs. Gone were his glasses. He must have put in his contacts. He asked if I had gotten something to drink? I held up my beer bottle. Cool, he said. He turned on some music and they wasted no time getting drunk. They started a game of quarters and I was the mark. I was getting sloshed and I tried to make it interesting by saying let's but a spin on this game. Kind of like truth or dare with a kick. They were having too much fun. I felt well if this is how they wanted to play. I started sinking those quarters too. Now it was pick on Nick time. Before long Nick and I were both drunk. We were laughing at everyone and every thing. More and more people were arriving. I remembered some music started and someone grabbed my hand. I remember we danced so close. He smelled so good. He was very tender. He was rubbing my back with his hand. I just leaned onto his chest and enjoyed the music. The next song was a little faster but we still danced really close to each other. He was laughing at something AJ said. It was the most adorable laugh. I was starting to come out of the fogginess and looked up to see Nick smiling down at me. Oh, my I hadn't realized it was Nick. He was a really good dancer. He asked if I was having a good time? I told him I was. Just then Beej grabbed me and pulled me to a sofa. So? She said. How's it going? I said, you have a pretty cool brother. She said she couldn't put a stick between us when we were dancing. I laughed. Nick brought me another beer and sat down next to me. Beej said, great party Nick. She got up and left me sitting there. He said, Let's go for a walk.

Chapter 2

Nick and I made our way out the sliding glass door. I could see a boat moored to the dock. Nick said it was hot in there. It felt good to be outside, we continued to walk in the direction of the boat. We were standing right in front of it now. Nick pulled some keys from his pocket and unlocked the door and I stepped on the boat. He then said, Howie tells me we have this in common? I told him not quite this, but I was raised on the water in Maine. He said he's been to Maine before and thought it was a beautiful state. Especially Northern Maine, right on the water. He found it very peaceful. He asked what made me move to Florida? I said, School I attend FSU. No kidding he said, so do I. I knew that but I just said, oh really? He asked why I chose to come to Florida? I told him I loved the Atlantic Ocean and wanted to attend a school where I could still go to the water. Nick said, and Maine didn't have any schools like that? I laughed, I said I also wanted to put some distance between my parents and me. He asked what year of college I was in. I said, well unfortunately it's my first. I'm a freshman. I stayed home for almost 2 years helping my family with the business. Dad promised to "set me up" if I put off going to school for a little while. So how did he "set you up" Nick asked? Well he bought a house for me, and a car. So now I don't have to work while attending school. I do have a part time job at an insurance agency though. Just so I can have some spending money. My Education is all paid for. That's why my parents work so hard. He thought our parents really had the right ideas. Nick said, we better head back. He turned to me and said, you know if you ever feel the need to go out on the Ocean, call me and we'll take the boat out. I smiled, I said it's bred into me, I need to be by the Ocean everyday. He smiled and took my hand and helped me off the boat. He locked up the boat and we headed back to the party. Nick opened the door and there was a big commotion going on in the living room. Someone tied some belts together and they were doing the Limbo. They were all chanting, "How low can you go." Over and over again. Nick looked at me and asked if I Limbo? I laughed and said, we'll see. Nick and I got in line and it was my turn. I bent back to try, and Nick bent down to hold my hair from dragging on the ground. I made it through. I was hysterical laughing watching Nick's 6-foot body trying to go under the belts. He came through and asked me what was so funny? I said, I was surprised he made it. BJ was at the front of the line now. I pointed and Nick turned around. Go Beej, Go Beej, Go Beej, he kept chanting. She fell and they had to start the belts up again. It was so much fun. I haven't laughed this hard in ages. BJ caught up with me and asked me to follow her. She took me upstairs and into a bathroom. She had to urinate and she needed company. She asked what I thought of her brother? I said, I don't know. I like him. He's fun. She said, he's had a crush on you ever since you moved in next door to me. I said, really? She said, he's been begging me for weeks to set you up with him. I was so embarrassed. I said, he was late today. She said, I know. He stopped at her house first. He wanted her to make sure he looked OK for the date. I laughed. She washed her hands and we freshened up our make up. I said, so this crush, it's based solely on looks then? She said, it's your hair Rachel. He loves long hair. Do you know what would just drive him wild? I said what? She said take these combs out. I pulled them out and my thick hair fell around my face and poured down my shoulders. He said that's gonna kill him. I laughed I said, you ready? She said, your going to leave it down? I said, I want to see how he'll respond. We headed back towards the stairs. I stopped, which room is Nick's? She walked and opened a door, this one. It was a mess. How does he know that there is a floor in there I asked? She laughed. She closed the door and we walked downstairs. Nick wasn't the only one to notice me. Beej asked if I was watching Nick's expression? I said, uh huh. I walked in to the kitchen and I grabbed another beer from the ice chest. Nick was right beside me to open it for me. What took you so long? He said. I told him girl talk. He asked if I wanted to dance? Sure I said. I drank some beer and he led me to the dance floor. He pulled me close and ran his fingers through my hair. I caught a glimpse of Beej and she was smiling at me. She was trying not to laugh. The music stopped and I went and got my beer and sat down next to her. She said he's a sucker for girls with hair. I laughed. Beej had a couple of guys now talking to us. BJ whispered into my ear that Nick was looking at us. I looked over in his direction and mouthed the words HELP ME, in his direction. He practically knocked people over getting to me. He asked me to dance. I looked back at BJ with an evil grin. Nick spun around and pulled me to his chest. I said, Thank You I was feeling funny around those guys. Where'd you go anyway? He said he was talking to AJ a minute. I told him he was supposed to be my date. He looked into my eyes and said he was sorry. I just laid my head back on his chest. He continued to run his fingers through my hair. After the song ended Nick led me by the hand back out onto his back porch. I said are you hot again? He said, yes and it's too noisy in there too. He pulled me to his chest and we danced out on the porch.

Chapter 3

Nick's party was winding down. I was sitting next to him munching on something he brought from the kitchen. BJ came by to say good bye and offered me a ride home. Nick said, I'd take her before I even had a chance to respond. BJ said she's my neighbor why drive all the way across town and back, when I can just take her home. Nick said, I picked her up and I'll bring her home. BJ said fine, suit your self. She told me she'd talk to me tomorrow. Nick asked if I was hungry? I'm starving I said. He said, let's go eat. Nick told Kevin he'd be back in awhile we were going to Denny's. Kevin said, well can't we come too? Nick looked at me and I said, I don't care. So the ten of us made our way down to Denny's Restaurant. The hostess put some tables together so that we could all sit together. It was after 2am so there wasn't many people there. Nick and I sat together and he asked me what I wanted? I told him I was hungry enough to eat a horse. Nick flipped over the menu and said I'd have to pick something else it didn't appear that horse was on the menu. I thought that was funny. Nick had his hand on the back of my neck and was massaging it as I studied the menu. The club sandwich I said. Nick ordered a burger and fries. I was looking for a mirror in my purse and Nick let go of my hair. It came crashing in all around my face. I swept it back and went for my combs. Nick grabbed it and held it for me. I found a scrunchy instead and pulled my hair back off my face. We all talked about the party and AJ asked me how my blind date turned out. I said, I had a wonderful time. Nick said, I had a great time. AJ said, so ask her out again. Nick blushed and looked down at the table. I told AJ that he already did. Nick looked at me. I said, remember on the boat. AJ said, he took you on the boat? Ha ha ha! I said it got so hot that we walked outside and we walked down to it. What's wrong with that? AJ said nothing I guess. Brian asked, when we were going to get together again? I looked at Nick and said, well I suppose once we finish this first date, then we can discuss that. AJ was relentless, so how about tomorrow? I asked him if he was asking me out? He said, no I meant you and Nick. I told him Nick was a grown man and could make his own decisions. Nick was really uncomfortable now. Our food came and we ate. We were all very hungry. Nick ate his burger in what seemed like two bites. I had had a salad and couldn't finish my sandwich. I offered it to him. He said, are you sure? I patted my tummy and said I was. I excused my self and went to the restroom. Annie and Claudia were right behind me. I came out of the stall and they were fixing their makeup. They turned to me and asked what I thought of Nick. I said he was nice. I washed my hands. Then Annie said, so do you think you'll go out with him again? I said that depended on Nick. I walked out and left them in the restroom. AJ saw me walking back and they all sat up straight. Nick stood up and held out my chair. He asked me if I wanted some of his Chocolate Cake Sundae. I said, sure I'd have a bite. He cut a small piece of his cake and fed me a bite. I had chocolate sauce running down my chin and he wiped it off for me. I looked at AJ who was staring at me. I leaned across the table and said, He better ask me out again! He laughed. What? Nick asked. I just smiled at AJ. Nothing can I have another bite? AJ just busted out laughing. I lost it too. It was so funny. Nick was looking at the two of us wondering what just happened. Kevin and Joanna stood up to leave. Kevin dropped a twenty on the table and said good night. Howie and Claudia soon followed. We ordered coffees and talked for a little while longer. Annie asked Brian to take her home and they left. It was just the four of us now. Theresa excused herself and went to the restroom and AJ followed her. Nick turned to me and asked what I said to AJ that was so funny? I said, I told AJ that you had better ask me out again. Reminding him of the cake and ice cream. He said, oh. He slowly pulled the scrunchy out of my hair. He leaned over and kissed me. It was just a small peck on the lips but it was nice. AJ rounded the corner and saw it. Nick immediately went red. AJ looked at Nick, what's the matter with you? He asked. Nick regained his composure and I grabbed his hand. He asked if I was ready to go? It was almost 4 now. Yes, I'm tired I said. We walked out to our cars and AJ said Rach I'll see you around. He got in his Corvette with the music blaring and he sped off. Nick helped me into his vehicle and we drove to my house. We sat in his truck for a little while. He said, I'd really like to take you out again. It's me asking though. Not the guys pressuring me. I told him I'd like that. He leaned over and kissed me again. His hands were again raking through my hair. We got out and he walked me my door. So can I pick you up tomorrow about noon. I looked at my watch. It was 4:15AM. I told him if I went in right now, I could get about 6 hours sleep by then. He pulled me closer and said, in a minute. He kissed again. He waited until I went inside and then he got back in his car and left. I stripped out of my dress and took a quick shower. I set my alarm for 10:30AM and went to sleep.

Chapter 4

I woke up to my telephone ringing. Hello. It was Nick. I said hi. He asked why I wasn't ready. I looked at the clock. Oh no, it was 12:30. My alarm didn't go off. I'm so sorry. Where are you? He said he was next door at BJ's house. I told him to come over I'd only be a minute. I hung up and grabbed my bikini and put it on. I grabbed my shorts and stepped into them and I heard the doorbell. I fastened my shorts and opened the door. I'm sorry Nick. I closed the door and slipped my shirt on over my bikini top. I was rushing around and he said stop, slow down we have all day. I told him I had to go upstairs for a minute. He said, he'd be fine. He sat down and I told him to help himself in the kitchen. I was shouting down to him asking if it was just going to be the two of us? He said yes, he hoped I didn't mind. I was brushing out my hair and putting on deodorant. I ran into my room to get my shoes and headed downstairs. Nick was sitting on the bottom step. I sat down mid way and slipped my Vans on my feet. I went up again to brush me teeth. OK I said, now I'm ready. Nick stood up and I got down to the second step and we could see eye to eye. He gave me a small peck on the lips and I grabbed my keys and we went outside. BJ was walking over to my house when we came out. She said, Good Morning Neighbor! I smiled and said good morning. BJ handed Nick a bag with sandwiches and drinks in it. I said, I could have done that. Nick smiled and put them in the cooler. BJ cornered me and asked what happened after she left. I walked her back to her side of the drive way we shared and told her Nick took me to Denny's and AJ and the guys were putting a lot of pressure on him to ask me out. I told her that Nick kissed me. She shreiked! AH! Nick was leaning against the back of his Expedition. He knew what we were talking about. I asked her what he said about me? She said he definitely likes you. What did you tell him about me? She said, Nick's waiting. I said, what did you say? She said she told Nick that I was very interested in him. My mouth dropped. She said close your mouth before you swallow a fly. It's true anyway. Nick walked up behind us and said, What's true? I looked at BJ and she said that it's a beautiful day. Yeah right, Nick said. We have to be going Nick said. BJ said we'll talk later and Nick helped me in his truck. Nick was dressed in a wife beater and his swim trunks. I started thinking about my first thoughts of him. What was I thinking? Nick laid his hand on my thigh. What are you thinking about? I told him the party. I had on my dark glasses and was taking in every inch of his body. He said he was looking forward to today. He's glad I had fun and got to meet his friends. I asked even AJ? He said even AJ. That's just his personality. We drove back to Nick's house and he lifted the cooler from the back of his truck and we walked around his house and down to the boat. He helped me on the boat and he started the engine. I helped him untie the boat from the dock and we headed out into the channel. Nick had on his fishing hat. He looked good. We made our way out into the ocean and Nick turned on the radio. I sat down next to him in the captain's chair. We finally settled on a place to drop anchor. Nick removed his wife beater and I joined him out on the deck. I removed my clothes and rubbed sun block on myself. I asked Nick if he would do my back. I lifted my hair and he rubbed it on my shoulder and my back. He leaned in and kissed my neck. I turned around to face him. Your turn I said. He turned his back to me and I rubbed the sun block on his back ever so slowly. He had a strong back. I massaged more sun block into his shoulders. He has nice strong looking hands. Nick stood up and lifted me into his arms. Let's dance he said. I eased out of my shoes and Nick kicked his thongs into the corner of the boat. While we were dancing I kept thinking this is the closest to being naked with a guy that I've ever been. I was smiling and didn't even realize. Nick looked down at me and said why are you smiling? I told him I was happy. He removed my sunglasses from my face and said, I'd love to see your eyes some time today. He leaned down and kissed me. I asked him if he wanted to swim? Oh no, he said. I don't swim in the ocean. Why not? Sharks he said. I laughed. I'm afraid of sharks. I told him it was perfectly safe. I walked to the back of the boat. I opened the door that led to the back step. I turned and asked if he was coming? He shook his head no. I dove into the water. It was so nice. Nick came back and sat on the step with his feet in the water. I swam under water and reached up and grabbed his feet. He withdrew his feet from the water so fast. I choked on the water. He bent down and lifted me out of the water. He said, You scared the shit out of me. I was coughing and laughing at the same time. He said, are you all right? I finally got control of myself and said, I was sorry. I was cold. Nick got a towel for me. I dried off and wrapped up. He sat behind me and let down my hair. He towel dried it for me. He asked if I was hungry. I said not yet. I got up and spread out the towel out on the floor of the boat. I lied down on my back and was sunbathing. Nick spread out another towel next to mine. He slid is hat forward on his head. He had a bowl of grapes. He looked into my eyes and asked if I wanted a grape. I opened my mouth. He came down on me with his lips. He inserted his tongue and I grabbed the back of his neck. He sat up and offered me another grape. I felt so many feelings rushing through my body. How would this all end?

Chapter 5

Nick placed his hands on my thigh and was kissing me. His hands were wandering all over my body now and rested on my stomach. I felt my stomach quiver. His hand found my breast. I broke off the kiss and said, OK, I'm hungry now let's eat. He sat up and apologized. We sat up at the table and ate the sandwiches BJ prepared. The sun was starting to set. Nick said we don't have much time left. Nick pulled out a few fishing poles and we fished and swapped childhood stories. It was a wonderful afternoon. We caught a few fish and released them back. Neither one of us wanted to kill a fish. We didn't want to clean it, was the truth. Nick took the poles and put them away. I helped him clean up the deck and I put my shorts back on. It was still really warm so I left my shirt off. My hair was a mess and I grabbed a brush and started brushing out my hair. I saw Nick out of the corner of my eye watching me. I smiled at him and told him to come over here. He came and I pulled him down to me and kissed him. What was that for? He asked. I told him for a wonderful weekend. I can't remember when I had so much fun. He said neither could he. Nick started up the boat and we headed back to his dock. The sun had set and it was very dark on his property. He hadn't left any lights on. Nick left the cooler on the boat and said he'd come back later for it. We walked hand and hand up to his back door. He unlocked it and we walked into the house. He flipped some lights on and asked if I was hungry. I told him I was. He went to his kitchen and surveyed the contents of his refrigerator. He said, I could cook a frozen pizza. I said, sure. He said, better yet let's order in. Either way is fine. He hit speed dial on his phone and asked me what I wanted on my pizza. I told him I didn't care. He asked why I was smiling? Speed dial to the pizza hut? He laughed. He speaks into the phone, yes, this is Nick Carter. Uh huh, OK, 20 minutes. Great. He hung up the phone. I just sat there staring. You didn't order anything. He said, I order the same thing so they kind of know me. I was laughing now. He crossed to me and kissed me. I asked him if I could change? He said sure. You know where the bathroom is. I grabbed my bag and headed upstairs. I took my bikini off and hopped in the shower. I washed of the salt water and washed with Nick's Pantene shampoo. I dried off with a towel and got dressed. I dried my hair the best I could. I walked downstairs dressed. Nick said you showered? I said, sorry I have this thing about personal hygiene. He laughed. He flew up the stairs and I heard the shower turn on. The doorbell rang and I answered the door. The guy handed me the Pizza I said, um Nick's in the shower. He said, It's billed to his account, don't worry. I was laughing at that. The delivery guy left and I placed the Pizza's and Pepsi's on the table. I was out in his back yard when he came down. He was wearing a pair of shorts and no shirt. He walked outside and said, here you are. I thought you left. I stood up and he kissed the top of my head. I said, you have and account with Pizza Hut? He laughed. You know about that huh? I said I asked the guy to wait while I got the money and he told me not to worry about it. Nick and I ate our pizza. It was getting late and I was getting tired. We were sitting on his couch when I dozed off. Unaware that I'd done that until I snapped my head up and smack Nick in the chin. I busted up laughing. I'm so sorry. I guess I fell asleep. Nick said I guess. I stood up and stretched. He said you ready to go home. I said, I have to work tomorrow. What time he said? 10-2. 4 hours. He said that's not bad. He grabbed his keys and drove me home. He walked me to the door and I asked him if he wanted to come in. He said, if he did he knew he wouldn't be able to control himself. I told him he would. I opened the door and checked my messages. BJ asking if I was home yet. All 4 of them. I handed Nick my cordless and got on the other extension. I knew it made him very uncomfortable when we talked behind his back. So I told him to be quiet and I'd call her back. Nick sat down on a chair and pulled me onto his lap. I dialed the number and Nick was listening. BJ answered and said it was about time I got home. She said she would come over. I told her not to. I was going to bed in a minute and just wanted to thank her for fixing me up with her brother. She said no problem. She asked me what we did? I told her we went on the boat. I said I went swimming but your brother wouldn't go in with me. I was staring him in the face. She said he has this thing about Sharks. I told her I knew that. I told her we fished a little too. She said how romantic. I laughed. I said, we danced and he kissed me again. She asked what kind of kisser Nick was. I said, I never kiss and tell. She said, OK then on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best, how would you rate him? I said, oh about a 50! She laughed. Then what did you do? I told her we went back to the house and we ordered a pizza and I took a shower. What? I said, alone. She said her brother must have been pacing something awful when I did that. She asked if he dried my hair? I said yes. She said I told you he has a thing for woman with long hair. I was smiling at Nick. So when did he bring you home? I said about 20 minutes ago. Did he walk you to the door? I said of course. She said when did he leave? I said he didn't. He's still there? I said yes. Where is he? I said, I'm sitting on his lap. She laughed and said he must be so excited right now. I said, I don't know, Nick are you excited right now? He said yes into his end of the phone and said Goodnight Sis. She heard both clicks.

Chapter 6

We were laughing so hard. Nick said that was a good idea. He said he better go. I walked him out and he kissed me again. Damn, he said. I got to go. Otherwise I won't be able to control myself. I asked if I would see him tomorrow? He said, oh yeah. I kissed him again and he got in his truck and drove off. I went inside and dressed for bed. I made sure my alarm was set correctly. I fell asleep with a smile on my face I'm sure of it. My alarm went off at 8:30am. I set my hair and made breakfast and dressed for work. I was in such a good mood. I arrived at work and found a nice close spot to the building. I entered and coffee was ready. I knew it was going to be a good day. I sat down at my desk and turned on my computer. I switched on the radio and one of my favorite songs of all time came on. Lights, by Journey. Did the colors just seem brighter or have my eyes been closed all this time? I clicked on my workload and just started working. I had 100 claims to process. I was finished by lunch. My friend Jamie knocked on my cubicle and asked how my weekend went. I said, is it possible to totally fall in love with someone that you used to not like very much? Her eyes got really wide and sat down in a chair and said, I don't know, what happened? I told her about my next door neighbor and how she set me up because I'm not dating the right people. I only agreed because she's such a good friend. Well I had the best weekend and I can not wait until I can see him again. I filled her in on the entire weekend. She just sat listening to me. Then I told her how my morning was going. She said, ooh you have got it bad. I said what? Love bug. Cupid has shot you! Love baby, you're in love. Do you think? I turned to answer my phone and Jamie started laughing. I hung up the phone and said, What's so funny? She said your hot rollers are still in your hair. I was so embarrassed. I pulled them from my hair and was laughing hysterically as I did it. I dumped them in my workbag. My phone rang again and it was BJ this time. I told Jamie I had to take this. She said she'd be back to get me for lunch. I said, Hi, what's up? She said she was mad at me. I knew she wasn't, she wouldn't have called me if she were. I told her that I had incredibly strong feelings for Nick. Whenever I told her anything about him he would get really sensitive. So the call was my way of telling you that I didn't want to hurt him anymore. She said, What the hell happened this weekend? I had to twist your arm just to go out with him, now your ready to pick out china patterns. I told her I was not. I said he's just a wonderful man. He really is. She said, you're not telling me something. I told her that if she was waiting for me to tell her I had sex with him, then she would have to wait a long time because there was no sex. I told her I should be mad at her. Why me? She said. Why didn't you introduce him to me months ago? She fell out laughing. She said the reason she's calling me is because Nick wanted my work number. Can I give it to him? Yes, you can give it to him. Just tell him I'm leaving for lunch right now and I'll be back in 45 minutes. She said, OK. I hung up just as Jamie walked into my office. I asked her if my hair looked OK? She smiled and said it looked fine. We walked down the block and shared a sandwich for lunch. She said I was radiant. You are almost glowing Rachel. I smiled, I said is it possible to fall in love this fast? Jamie said, it depends on the person. We walked back to the office and I clicked on my workload again and found 4 more files. I had 30 minutes left. My phone rang in the middle of the third file. It was Nick. How's your day he asked? Better now I said. He said that's good. Aren't you off soon? I told him in ten minutes. He said, come to my house. I said, I needed to go home and change clothes first. He said, OK he'd meet me at my house. I laughed, he said I just wanted to see you. He said he was thinking about me all day. I told him his sister called and she was mad at what I did last night. He said she had already told him. I told him I had one more file to finish and I could go home. If I were to keep talking to him I'd never finish. He said, he would wait for me at my house. We hung up and I finished the file. Turned off the radio and computer. I grabbed my things and left. My boss stopped me and said it looked like I had had a great day. I told him I had a great weekend and it motivated me a little. He had been trying to date me ever since I started here. He was a real creep. I told him I was late for an appointment and had to go. He told me he'd see me tomorrow. I almost ran to my car. I put the top down and let my hair loose. Nick was waiting for me when I pulled into my driveway. I got out of my car and started to pick up my things when I felt his hand on my butt. Hey, I said. He said hello. He leaned in and kissed me. BJ's car wasn't in her driveway. Where's your sister I asked? I don't know. I don't much care right now either. Nick carried my bags inside. He said I looked very nice in my suit. Thank you I said. I turned on my computer and told Nick I'd be back in a minute. I ran upstairs and changed my clothes. I turned around to see Nick standing in my bedroom door. I was standing in my bra and underwear. I said, Nick? What are you doing up here?

Chapter 7

He said looking for you. I told him I wasn't dressed yet. He said, I was wearing more now that I was yesterday. I laughed, he was right. I stepped into my shorts and pulled on my tank top. He said he liked my room. He said it was much cleaner than his. I said I know. He looked at me and said, How do you know? I said, well….BJ showed it to me the night of the party. He leaned his head back and placed his hand over his face. He was embarrassed. I told him not to worry about it. We went downstairs and I told him I had to check my email because my mom always emails me on Monday's. He noticed my screen saver. He said, who are those people. I pointed out my mom and dad. I said, this is my sister Mary. This is my brother David and this is my other sister Monica. You guys are so tan. Lobster boating does that too you. We stay out there all day. I signed on the computer and opened my email. He said he liked my screen name. It was N2H2O. In to water. I asked if he was on AOL, he said he was. His screen name was BBALLNE1. Which he translated to mean Basketball anyone? I said you like to play? He said he did. I told him my high school team was All State Champions. He laughed, beautiful and you play sports. I laughed. I told him I had a hoop in the back. He said in the back? I said, the house had RV parking. Well I don't have and RV so I put a hoop back there and it's the same size as a half court floor. I said, we'd go out in a minute. Good old mom, here's my weekly letter. She said everyone is well. My cousin Linda had her baby. A little boy, oh my goodness she named him Nicholas. He said, nice name but I don't spell mine that way. I said how do you spell it. He said, phonetically. N I C K O L A S. Cute I said, your parents are clever people. He laughed. I said, dad's business is profitable. She tells me to quit my job. Why Nick said? I told him about my boss and what a creep he is. I told him I was late because of him. He didn't like that I was under so much stress when it came to my boss. I told Nick he'd have to give me a picture of him to put on my desk. I was praying inside that he would. He said, sure I got one for you. He said, how about I take you to work tomorrow and I'll pick you up too. I told him he didn't have to do that. He said, he wanted to. Whatever makes you happy I said. Next my mom asked if I'd met anyone yet. I tried to skim over that part but Nick made me go back. He read it and asked how was I going to respond? I told her truthfully. I said that maybe I'd scan your picture to her. He laughed. I told Nick I'd respond later. I grabbed a gallon of ice cold water out of my refrigerator and headed out back with Nick. I grabbed a basketball out of the shed. I dribbled the ball and Nick tried to steal, I went in for the lay up. SCORE! Nick laughed. I said you make it, you take it. I went around the court again and Nick tried again. SWOOSH! That's four I screamed. He said, you are so competitive. Oh, am I? I took it out again and Nick went for it and almost got it. I faked left and went right and six I screamed. I asked him if he wanted to take it out now. He said no, you said you make it, you take it. OK, I went back and came in again this time he wasn't even trying to steal it. I stood at what would be half court line with a clear view of the basket. I let it fly. Oh, I said a three pointer. I was having a good time. That would be, 9! I asked what we were playing too? He said 21. OK, I looked at my watch. It was 3:45. I can start dinner at four then. He checked his watch. Oh, you want to bet? I said yes. If I make 12 points in the next 15 minutes, you have to cook me dinner. If I don't then I have to cook you dinner. Deal? Nick said, deal. I said, you have to cook. No take out, bring in stuff. From scratch. He said that's how he likes his food made. By the way, what was I going to make? I looked at him and asked if he was ready? Take your best shot. I was lining myself up while I was talking to him. I turned around like I was going back to mid court and lobbed the basketball over my shoulder. A no look shot. All I heard was Swish! I said without looking at him that's 3 more. The other 9 came fast and furious. I had 15 seconds to spare. Nick said, Brian thinks he's good. We are going to have to run a scam on him. I said sure, right after you cook me dinner. He said OK. Are you hungry? I said yes. He said, I could cook anything I want? I said, anything you want. We went inside and he looked in my refrigerator. He took out the carton of eggs and broke two eggs in a bowl. He looked for a frying pan and put some butter in it. He added a little milk to the eggs and then threw in some bread. French Toast? I said. That's not dinner. He said it was tonight. He earned a few points though. He toasted the bread and then he spread cream cheese inside and placed another slice of bread on top. He warmed the syrup and served me my first home cooked meal by him. He sat and we ate the French Toast. He said, well how is it? I told him it was the best French Toast I've ever had. He smiled. He said, All State huh? I laughed, I said you said something about scamming Brian? He looked at me with the most evil grin.

Chapter 8

Nick was at my house at 9:15. I let him in and told him I'd be ready in a minute. I was pouring coffee into my commuter mug. He said your commute is 10 minutes. I laughed. Yes that's true but I'm usually the one who has to make it when I get there. That takes another 10 minutes so by the time I finish with this cup it'll be ready. Nick said, I got that picture for you. I laughed where is it? He handed it to me. He had it framed too. Oh, I love it, it's a really nice picture. Thanks he said, now what do I get for that? I walked over to him and gave him a kiss. He rubbed his hands up and down my sides. I told Nick I was going to be late. He said why don't you quit? I told him I would once school started. We had two weeks. I asked him if he had registered? He said no. I told him I still had to go too. I told him we should take a fun class together. He said, that's a great idea. I said, still holding his picture in my hand, photography? OK, that sounds good to me. I grabbed my briefcase and my workbag and followed Nick out to his truck. He knew approximately where I worked so he drove to the Business Park and I instructed him where the office was located. He parked the car and followed me inside. Head's were a turning. I was so proud! I moved some stuff off my desk and set up my picture of Nick. Nick sat down in the chair next to my desk and I flipped on my computer. He asked if I got email here? I said yes, why? Just wondering he said. I said you don't need to email me, you can call me. I handed him my business card. He said, he had the number memorized already. I smiled at him. I told him I'd be right back. I walked into the break room and started the coffee. I walked back and Jamie was in my office talking to Nick. I walked in and said, I see you've met Nick. She said, yes I have, in this voice that she only used when she was trying to pick up a man. I said, I'd see you later Jamie. She stood up and looked at me. Bye, I said, waving at her. Nick asked if I was jealous? I said, what did you say to her? He said, nothing. She asked me if I was your boyfriend? What did you say? I asked. He said he never got the chance to answer because you came back and threw her out. I did not, I said. Nick was laughing. OK, then if I didn't come back what would you have said? He said, well now I don't know. Nick, please tell me what you would have said? I almost begged. What would you have liked me to say? He teased. I would have wanted you to say yes, but if you don't feel that way then I understand. I quickly turned to my bookcase behind me pretending to look for something. Nick spun my chair around and said, can I be your boyfriend? I smiled and said I had to think about it. He laughed, I hopped into his lap and said, I'd love to be your girlfriend. He said then it's official, we are officially dating. He asked if he could peek down my top now. I was shocked. He said, well I want to check out the package first. I got up and kissed him and told him it was time for him to go. He said, come on just a little peek? I told him not now, I walked him outside and kissed him goodbye. I turned to go back inside and he grabbed my ass! I screamed. He left me there all red in the face and embarrassed. I'll get you for that I said. He said, is that a promise or a threat? He blew me a kiss and drove off. I went back inside and it felt like everyone was staring at me. I walked back to my office and sat down. I was staring at Nick's picture on my desk. He had the most beautiful smile. So warm and inviting. I didn't notice Jamie in the doorway. Earth to Rachel, come in Rachel. I snapped my head up and said what? She said I called your name twice. Oh, I guess I'm a little distracted this morning. So she said that was your weekend? I said, that's my boyfriend Nick. She raised her eyebrows, oh so it's your boyfriend now is it? I said, he officially asked me this morning. How cute, she said. I got up to refill my coffee in the break room. My boss wasn't in yet so he didn't see Nick. I went back to my office and clicked on my work file. 50 files, cool this wouldn't take long. I began working on the files and maybe an hour into them I was called to the front of the office. I had a delivery. Red Roses, oh my goodness, who are they from? Jamie said. I tipped the deliveryman and read the card. Nick sent them I said all proud. I carried my flowers back to my office, Jamie in tow. She said what does the card say? It has a phone number on it. She said, how mysterious, call it. I dialed the phone number and I asked for Nick. A voice said, Is this Rachel? I said, yes. He wants you to call this number. I hung up and Jamie said now what? He left another number. I dialed the phone and again asked for Nick. Is this Rachel? Another voice said. Yes, this is Rachel. Nick wants you to call this number. I looked at Jamie and hung up the phone. I dialed another phone number and reached the Sheraton. I asked for Nick Carter. One moment came a woman's voice. The next sound I heard was Nick's voice. You found me, he said. What was that all about? He said, I'm taking you to lunch. OK, but why couldn't you just call me and invite me to lunch? Why are you at the Sheraton? Nick said I'd tell you all this at lunch. Why time can I pick you up? Noon, I said. OK, I'll see you then. Jamie said, what was all that about? I don't know.

Chapter 9

I had gotten another 25 files dropped into my workload. They were all marked priority. Apparently, Mr. Andrews was in. I quickly typed up my resignation notice. I had talked to Jamie and the most she ever got done in a day was 30. I did 100 yesterday and started out with 50 this morning. I had just printed the resignation notice when Nick scared me. Oh Nick. Don't do that. Did I scare you he asked? He said what were you doing? I handed him the letter. As he read the letter his smile got bigger and bigger. Why he asked? I'm being dumped on in here. I found out today that the average worker is assigned between 25 and 50 files a day. I did 100 yesterday and I have 75 today. I'm the only one in here working part time. He said then don't resign, Quit! I said, let's just go to lunch. I took the letter back from Nick and placed it in my personal folder in my top left drawer. I grabbed my purse and left with Nick. Mr. Andrews was talking to someone at the front desk and noticed Nick and I walking towards the front door. Hello, Ms. Rogers. How are you today? I smiled and kept walking. Who's your friend? I stopped and said Mr. Andrews this is my boyfriend Nick Carter. They shook hands. I said let's go I'm hungry. Nick opened the door for me. I said, where are we going? He said the Sheraton. I just looked at him. The valet parked the car and Nick directed me to the bank of elevators. He inserted a card and punched the Penthouse floor. I eyed him suspiciously. Why are we going to the Penthouse? He said, just wait. He edged closer to me and kissed me. I said, Nick I'm not ready for this. Nick smiled. The doors opened and Nick led me by the hand to PH2. I looked him in the eyes and said Nick, listen to me. I can't do this. He opened the door and Brian, AJ, Kevin and Howie were all inside. I looked at him. Business he said. I thought I'd bring you here for lunch since I was in town. OK, I feel like a complete idiot now. Brian said, Hey Rachel what's up? I smiled and nodded my head. I feel like a fool I said to myself. I turned back to Nick and said I was sorry. Nick said don't be, if the place was empty he'd have me back in the bedroom. I smiled. What are you guys doing here I said? Brian looked down at the buffet table before him and said, Lunch do you want some? I laughed sure it looks good, I said. I have no idea what half the stuff on my plate was, but I ate it anyway. AJ was still trying to get under my skin. The topic had turned to sports. AJ said, let's not talk about sports, poor Rachel won't even know what we are talking about. I looked at him. AJ started bragging about what a good basketball player he was. I said, oh yeah. Nick started giggling. Brian said, there isn't anyone who can beat me an AJ. Nick started busting up now. I said is that right? I said, I have a hoop in my backyard if they ever wanted to take Nick and me on. Brian and AJ looked at each other with those wide eyes of theirs and said, when and where? I said, tonight after work. Loser has to cook dinner for the winners. From scratch, no breakfast food. Has to be a real meal. Brian said you're on. What time are you off? I said 2 O'clock. Brian said, we'd be there at 4. Where do you live? Next door to BJ, I said. AJ was like sorry Nick, I want my steak medium rare, baked potato. Nick and I had our laugh now. I looked at my watch. Oh Nick, I'm late. Let's go. We rushed out of the hotel and waited for the Valet. Nick tipped the guy and we drove back to the office. I was 10 minutes late from lunch. I'd never been late before. Nick said, chill out, what could possibly happen? Nick walked me inside. Mr. Andrews was in my cubicle. I said, excuse me but what are you doing in here? He asked me if I realized I was 10 minutes late from lunch? I said, I did and I'm sorry. I'd make it up at the end of my shift. He said he was docking my pay. I said why? You don't dock the other workers pay when they show up late. He said, we are not talking about the other workers. Nick just leaned in the doorway. Mr. Andrews had my resignation letter in his hand. He said what's this? I said, why were you going through my things? He said, he found it on my desk. I said, no you didn't. I had it in my personal folder in my desk. He shook his head. I was pissed off now. I told him you know what, I'm not going to resign. I Quit. I picked up my briefcase and my bag. I grabbed my personal possessions. Mr. Andrews all the while saying hold on. Don't do this. I shut off my computer knowing full well that all my files were not saved. All that work would have to be redone by someone else. He got mad when I did that. I just grabbed everything and told him I'd be back in a few days for the rest of my things and my final paycheck. Nick and I walked out. Jamie was just coming back from lunch. She'd left before I did. She asked where I was going? I told her I quit. She just sat there with her mouth open. Nick put my bags in the back seat and opened the door for me. I jumped in and sat down. I was shaking. I was so mad. I had two weeks until school started. Now I didn't even have a job. Nick asked if I was all right? I said I'd be fine.

Chapter 10

Nick rubbed my thigh. He said, you'll be all right. I said I sure hoped so. I'd planned out all of my expenses based on my pay. Now I'm not sure if it would all work out. Nick said he could help. Gee thanks, but no thanks. He said, what? It's OK, I'll manage. I could always call my parent's if I was really stuck. We drove back to the Sheraton. Nick said, I just need to finish up here and then I'll take you home, OK? I said sure. I am hoping that there is some food left. Nick laughed. If not order room service. I said, no thank you. He said, I'm not paying for it, my employer is. Well in that case. Nick laughed. We walked back in and the guys were all sitting on the sofas. Nick said, too late. The phone is over there. I went to the phone and ordered a cheeseburger fries and a Pepsi. I couldn't see Nick's face, only the back of his head. They were all in deep conversation. Brian was talking about "new material." The older gentleman asked if they gone over it and what they thought. I picked up a magazine on the table and was flipping through it when I heard the most angelic voices on the face of the earth. I quickly looked around and realized it was the guys. They were singing A Capella. Wow, I had no idea. Wait a minute, BJ said Nick played drums in a band. What was that all about? They finished up and there was a knock on the door. I started to get up but Nick beat me to the door. He signed for the food and brought in my tray. He said, we're almost finished now. I smiled at him. He went back and sat down. They were talking quietly now. Nick was talking but I didn't know what he was saying. His hands were moving a mile a minute. He sat back and clasped his hands behind his neck. I bit into my hamburger. It was hot! I suppressed a scream. They all looked at me. Sorry, I said. I turned my back to them. I was so embarrassed. I was flipping through the magazine and nibbling on some fries when I noticed the guys were all at the door, shaking hands with the businessman. When he left they all hi-fived each other. I was full but still had half my burger on my plate. Nick sat down next to me. I apologized for the interruption. The cheeseburger was hot. He laughed. He looked at my plate and asked if I was done with it? I said, I'm full. He said, good I'm starving and he finished my burger and fries. He leaned over and kissed me, he said now let's go kick some ass! I kissed him again. Nick helped me up and said, AJ, B don't be late. AJ said, I'll stop and pick up those steaks and potato's on the way to your house, OK? He laughed. Nick and I got in the elevator and Nick said, I can't wait! I asked him who that guy was he was talking with? A new promoter for our band. I asked Nick if he played the drums? He said, yes why? No reason, I just heard the other guys singing and thought it was you. We got into the truck and Nick said, I was singing with them. So you sing and play the drums? Nick said yes. You're very talented, I said. Nick was pulling out of the hotel and once we got on the road he said, you knew I was in a band right? I said, BJ told me you played drums. Is that all BJ told you? Yes, what did she do now? Nick said open the glove box. I opened it. The blue CD, do you see it? I pulled it out and held it up, this one? He said look at the cover. I looked at the cover. Oh shit! There on the cover was AJ, Brian, Kevin, Nick and Howie. Millennium, backstreet boys. Are you guys famous? Nick laughed, you mean you really didn't know? I still don't know, I said. Nick was laughing now. What did my sister tell you about me? I said, other than you like women with long hair? Not much else that's turning out to be true. She told you I liked long hair? I said, don't change the topic. I said, could I play this? He said sure. I inserted the CD into the CD player. I recognized AJ's voice right away. I said, oh my goodness, you guys are good. Then I heard Nick sing. Nick said you really didn't know? I swear Nick, I didn't know. He said it's OK. Is it? I asked. I asked who the lead singer was? He was getting a big kick out of this. There is no lead singer, we all sing. I was leaning against the passenger door looking at him. I said, what do we do now? He said, we're all going to your house to play basketball. I turned to face the front and I said I'm going to kill your sister. Then I heard Nick singing "I want it that way." I asked him if I could keep the CD? He said, do you want me to sign it? I just looked at him. He said I'm kidding. He pulled into my driveway and parked next to my car. I was nervous now. I tried to get out of the car with my seat belt still on. Nick opened my door and said, it's OK. He leaned in and kissed me. I popped the CD out of the radio and put it into the CD case. I said, I'm just having one hell of a day. Nick took my bags and the keys from my hand. He opened the door and we went inside.

Chapter 11

I closed the door and leaned against it. I held up the CD case and stared at the cover. Nick came to me and put the CD case down. He pulled me to him and we sat on the step. He said, is this going to hurt our relationship? I looked at him and said, I'm just nervous now. He kissed me long and passionately. He said how do you feel now? Weak, I said. He laughed. C'mon go upstairs and change so I can kick their butts. I ran upstairs and changed into my Orlando Magic jersey and put on my high tops. I pulled my hair back and braided it. I looked out the window and saw Nick talking to the guys. They looked in my general direction. I don't think they saw me. I looked in the mirror of my dresser. I said, this is OK. I ran downstairs and put the CD on. I was getting some water when Nick and the guys walked in. I quickly turned off the CD. Brian came up to me and said, hey they're good, who are they? He just looked at me and smiled. I looked at Nick. I said, you ready to go kick some butt. AJ teased me about my Orlando Magic jersey. I told him I hoped he bought T-bones because I was getting hungry. He laughed. We went out the back door and I placed two gallons of cold water and four cups on the picnic table. Nick grabbed the ball out of the shed. I asked them what are we playing to? AJ said, 21 but don't worry it will be over in a minute. I said, well since you are so good, can I please take it out first? I said, if you make it, you take it out. Does that sound OK, with you big hunk of man you? Nick fell over laughing. AJ said, here you go my lady. I told AJ to tell me when he was ready. He said, bring it on. I faked left and went right and scored two points. Uh oh, Nick what was that? I said. Nick couldn't even stop laughing. AJ said, I didn't want you to go scoreless. I said, AJ you ready. He said, I'm ready. I ran him around in circles and shot it from the corner. Oh boy Nick, 5 to zero. I told AJ it must just be luck, or maybe it's this jersey. You want to wear it? Nick sat on the ground he was laughing so hard. Brian threw his hands up in the air. He said, AJ you cover Nick. I'll take Rachel. I said, oh you want a piece of me now. Nick was laughing so hard he couldn't even stand up anymore. I said, should we tell them Nick? Nick was shaking his head. I said, Nick came over the other day and taught me everything he knows. Nick was gasping for air now he was laughing so hard. He was literally rolling around on the ground. Brian said, what's going on? I told him I used to play girl's basketball in high school. He said, so? Oh yeah, I went all state too. They still had no clue. I'm here in Florida on a Basketball scholarship. Now they got it. Shit, AJ said. I told him I liked my steak medium-well. He said, you never got to 21. I said, it's 5 zero. Let's see it's 4:30 if you start the barbecue now we can be eating at 4:45. That got Nick going again. Brian said, Nick it's not that funny. I helped Nick up. I said, he's laughing because you guys fell for the same trick he did. I told him what happened to Nick. Brian said, you made French Toast? Now we were all laughing. Brian said, you should try out for the WNBA. I told him I already did. You didn't make the cut? I told him I did, but I promised my parents that I'd get an education. There eyes all bugged out. Nick said you never told me that. I said, well it appears I wasn't the only one keeping a secret. Nick said, I thought you knew? Well after I kicked your butt Sunday I would have thought you knew too. We stood around just shooting hoops. Brian was really good. He asked me for some pointers. He said, how do you keep such control. I told him I count. I watch my opponents eyes and they watch mine. I look left and go right. Then just when they think they figured out my secret I do something else. Like what he said? I'll tell you some other time. I don't feel like giving up all my secrets. Nick came and put his arm around my shoulder. He said she hasn't told me everything yet. AJ was sitting down with his sunglasses hanging off the end of his nose. I said, what's the matter with you? Brian said, he's just not used to being beat by a woman. AJ said, I would…never mind. We all laughed. We knew where he was going with that. Nick turned me to face him. He asked if I was OK? I said I was. He said we are just regular guys. Just like everybody else. I said OK. Brian went in to use the bathroom and AJ went in to get the steaks. I looked at Nick and said, it sure is hot out here. I was pulling my jersey away from my body. Nick looked down his nose and down my top. Ooooh he said. I had a sports bra on so I didn't much care. AJ said that must be a lucky jersey. I said you think so? You think the talent is in the jersey? I looked at Nick. I said, then maybe you need it more than I do and I took it off and threw it at AJ. I walked into the house and Brian just looked at me with those wide eyes of his. Nick was right behind me. I ran up the stairs and Nick was laughing. Nick came up and lay on my bed while I looked for another shirt to wear. He finally said why did you do that? I said, AJ just gets under my skin. This sports bra has more material than my bikini top so I went for it. He said, you are always thinking aren't you? Yes I am. He said, what are you thinking right now. Hmmm, I'm thinking that you better get off my bed before I come over there. Nick lay all the way down and said, punish me. I pulled him up and said we have guests.

Chapter 12

The guys barbecued the steaks and we baked the potatoes. Brian and AJ left around 7:30. Nick stayed and helped me clean up. Nick said I really had fun today. I did too. Nick was a practical joker and so was I. I asked what his plans were for tomorrow? He said he didn't have any. I said, well since I don't have a job anymore neither, did I. I asked him what was next for his band? He said, they'd probably go on tour. I thought you were going to school? Looks like that's on hold. You're kidding? He said no. The whole point in going to school was so that he could do something with his life. If he were to leave the band he would lose out on one of the best opportunities of his life. He asked about the WNBA, which team was I awarded to? I said, New York Liberty. He said, you should have taken that. You can always take classes in the off season. I told him it wasn't too late. He said, It's not? I said, it's for next season. Nick suggested I talk to my parents. Nick said, the way I see it, our parents want us to follow our dreams. If you don't play then you will regret it for the rest of your life. If you do play and then change your mind after a season or two, well you'll be rich and then you can go back to school. I smiled. I said, you are so smart. I said, I'd call them in the morning. When I know my dad's on the boat. Nick said, if you need some support let me know. It was after 9 now. I'm so tired I said. I lay my head on his chest. I fell asleep on his chest. I woke up at 2:37am. I nudged Nick. I said, wake up. He moaned a little. I said, let's go upstairs, it's too late for you to drive home now. He followed me upstairs. It was quite obvious to me that he was not a morning person. I changed clothes in my bathroom and Nick was already asleep on my bed. I got in on the other side and fell asleep. I didn't set my alarm because I quit my job. Sleep came fast. I heard Nick walking around. I lifted my head up and he was sneaking out of my room. I asked him where he was going? He stopped and said, um, I, downstairs. I said, come back here. He said he was sorry he doesn't know how he got upstairs. I told him we fell asleep and I told him to come upstairs. He looked relieved. I said you've been trying to get me into bed since last weekend. He laughed, he said I was just kidding, I have more respect for you than that. He climbed back in bed and I put my head on his chest. Did you sleep OK? He said he did. It was almost 10am. I reached over for my phone and speed dialed my mom. Hi Ma, I said into the telephone. I told her everything was all right. I asked her how everyone was doing? Nick had intertwined our fingers of my left hand. I said, I have to talk to you a minute mom. I'm hoping you will convince dad of what I want to do. It's nothing bad, it's just that I want to play ball. I'm going to accept the offer from the Liberty for 10 million for 2 seasons. Nick squeezed my hand and made me wince. I looked at him. He mouthed 10 million dollars? I know mom, an education is important. Yes, I know mom. I have a scholarship. Yeah, but… but… mom I know, but… Well, can you just talk to dad for me? After the two seasons if I don't want to do it anymore I'll resign and I'll go back to school. Or I'll have so much money that I won't have to. I know mom, but I'm going to do it whether you like it or not, I'd just feel better if I had your blessing. OK mom. OK…I will… I love you too. Good-bye. I looked at Nick and he said ten million for 2 seasons? I said, yes. He laughed. So what did your mom say? She's going to talk to my father when he comes in for lunch. When will that be? Twelve sharp. I had an hour and twenty minutes. I got up and showered and dressed for the day. Nick made bacon and eggs for breakfast. We ate in silence. Nick asked what was going through my mind? I said, my dad is going to call in the next hour and I'm going to be afraid to answer the phone. We finished eating and I washed the dishes. Nick ran out to his truck and got a clean pair of clothes. He took a shower and while he was dressing my phone rang. Nick said, answer it. I picked up the cordless and said hello? It was my father. I sat there listening to my dad. Tears rolling down my face. Nick sat at my feet holding my hand. I said, yes dad… I know…OK… I'm fine, it's all right. I just wanted you to know…I will. Thanks for calling dad. I love you too. Good-bye. We lay there silent as I let my tears fall. Nick said, they don't want you to do it? I turned over to him and said, I just found you and now I'm losing you. Nick said, I'm not going anywhere. I said, but I am.

Chapter 13

Nick sat up and looked at me, what do you mean by that? I said that he was right. All our parents want is for us to be happy. He smiled, you're going to New York. I nodded my head and buried my face in his neck. Nick said, you're not going to leave for a while. We can still be together even if you are in New York. Long distance relationships don't work, I said. You'll find someone down here and I'll be alone up there. Nick kissed me on the forehead and said, I'm not looking anymore. You have my heart now. He said, so what did your dad say? My dad said he wanted to know what took me so long? He was hoping that I would go into the WNBA. He knew that I wanted an education and he didn't want to put me under any more pressure. Nick was holding me tightly, he said you have wonderful parents. He said, this calls for a celebration. I looked at him and said, oh yeah? I said, first I have to call New York. I got out of bed and went into my den and looked for my notice from the New York Liberty. I quickly dialed the phone number. I asked for Mr. Washington. I said, Rachel Rogers calling. Mr. Washington got on the phone and asked me how I was doing? I said, I know it's late but I've made a decision to come to New York. Mr. Washington said he was glad to hear that. He said, but unfortunately… I felt the air leave my chest… He continued, we traded you to a new expansion team. You what? Why did you do that? He said, the other women had all accepted and they thought that I wouldn't so the committee made them give back a player so that the new teams could have rosters. I said, so where am I going? He said, Orlando. I said, what? Barely able to control my excitement. Orlando has a new expansion team called the Orlando Miracle. You report on January 8th. Oh thank you Mr. Washington, thank you so very much. He said, So you'll go then? He laughed. Yes, I'll go, thank you so much. I hung up the phone and walked into the bathroom. Nick was still in the shower. Nick, you'll never guess what just happened? Nick said, Rach I'm in the shower. I stripped out of my clothes and walked into the shower. Rach, what are you doing? I said, if this is how I have to tell you than this is how it's going to be. I was happy but crying, he said what. I told him I've been traded. Nick said and that's good? I said yes! Ask me where I'll be playing? Los Angeles? No! Orlando I shouted and wrapped my arms around his naked body. He didn't know whether to hug back or not. He said, but Orlando doesn't have a team. I let him go and I said it does now. The Orlando Miracle, I have to report January 8th. Isn't this the best news? Nick said, well no, not really. I let him go again and looked up at him. Its not I said? He said, no. You standing here before me is the best news I've gotten all day. He leaned down to kiss me. I hung on to him so tightly. He turned the water off and carried me to the bed. He asked if it was OK, with me? I looked deeply into his eyes and said, Nick I'm falling in love with you. He bent down and kissed my face. He looked at me and said so am I. He caressed my body and made even my toes tingle. He made love to me and it was the best sex I could ever imagine. He was so gentle and sure of himself. Satisfying me in every way. We lay next to each other naked, when we were through. He said, so you get to stay in Florida? Damn that's nice! When did Orlando get a team? I don't know I said. I have to go to the office today and sign papers though, because the deadline is tomorrow. He said, what are we waiting for then? We hopped out of bed and finished our shower together. I dressed up and Nick and I went back to his house. He changed into something more business like. He quickly put out the word that he was having a party tonight, he said be there or be square, I thought that was funny. He said, I had some really important news to share and it was BIG! The guys promised to pass the word around. Nick and I drove to Orlando to the Orlando Arena. The security guard sent us in the right direction. I was so nervous. Nick held my hand, I told him not to leave my side. If he did, I don't think I'd have the strength to go through with it. Nick said he wasn't going anywhere. I made my way to Ms. Kramer's office. There I met the coach and general manager. Nick and I were asked to sit. They handed me my contract and Nick and I read it. I was the highest paid player on the team, according to the general manager anyway. He asked if I was that good? I said, well Nick would you like to answer that question? Nick said, She's all that! They laughed. I left with my Orlando Cap and Jersey. Nick got a cap and Jersey too. I picked number 7 at Nick's request. We walked outside with our Number 7 jerseys. I said, why did you pick number 7? He said, I'm lucky to have you in my life and that team is lucky to have you too. So I'm hoping that you'll be referred to as lucky number 7, Rachel Rogers. I just squeezed his hand and we kept walking.

Chapter 14

We drove back to my house so that I could get my trench coat. Nick and I were scheming a plan for tonight. We stopped off at the store and bought beer and snacks. Nick called a friend who is a caterer and asked if he could do anything for tonight? The guy told Nick he could put together some party trays for him. Nick said, I'll see you around 7 then. Nick couldn't wait to see AJ's face. I laughed me either. Nick told me to grab an overnight bag. I packed a few things and Nick and I headed for his home. It was 5:45 and I was starving. He asked if Mc Donald's was all right? I told him I loved Mc Donald's. We went through the drive through and I ordered my big and tasty with no pickles, fries and a large diet coke. Nick looked at me and laughed. A diet coke with a fatty cheeseburger and fries. I said, only in America! He laughed. Our order came through the window and we drove back to Nick's. We unloaded the beer and snacks. Nick told me to sit and eat. I always do what my man tells me so I sat down and ate. I ate everything. Nick said, you really must have been hungry. The coach wanted me to gain 10lbs. Isn't that awful? Nick said I'd gain it if I started weight training. Kevin could help you with that. Really? Do you think he will? Of course he will. Nick and I went up to his room to change for the party. We decided to play a trick on everyone. We put on our new Orlando Miracle #7 jerseys and a pair of shorts. No shoes, no socks, we then wrapped up in a trench coat. Giving the appearance that we weren't wearing anything underneath. AJ was the first to arrive. He looked at Nick and me and asked if he was too early? Nick said, no you're right on time. AJ said, because if you guys need more time to get dressed? Nick said, nope we're ready. AJ said, is this a costume party? We both laughed. No, you'll find out what this is about a little later. In a matter of an hour, everyone we wanted to be present was there. They were all watching Nick and me, wondering what was going on? Finally at about 8:30 they couldn't stand it any more. Nick and I stood on top of his coffee table. Nick turned to me and asked if I was ready? I said, yes I am. We started to untie the belts to our trench coats. Someone yelled get me some music. We laughed. Then we threw off our coats standing wearing our Orlando Miracle Jerseys. They didn't get it. Nick said, wait up as they started to go back to their conversations. This is the deal here, you all need to remember this one name. He said, Rachel Rogers has just been signed to the WNBA'S newest expansion team the Orlando Miracle. They all started clapping. AJ had a huge smile on his face. They all started congratulating Nick and me. We hopped off the table and Nick led me by my hand over to Kevin. Hey Train, she's got to gain 10lbs. I told her she could do it with weight training. Can you help? He thought about it for a minute and started nodding his head, yeah we can do that he finally said. Brian came up to me and hugged me. Wow, Congratulations he said. Thanks. AJ came up to me and held out his hand, he said peace? I hugged him. He said, I should have known it was a set up. I said, well you've always wanted to be beaten by a woman. He laughed, not on a basketball court he said. AJ said, you and Kevin have something in common. I said, Kevin and me? AJ said, Kevin used to run them over on the football field and now you'll run them over on the Basketball court. Oh, I said not getting it. He said, one of Kevin's nicknames is train. Your initials are RR. Railroads, train, get it? Nick said, how many beers have you had? We all laughed. We mingled some more, drank some more and finally they party was over and Nick and I went upstairs. I walked into his room and it was clean. I said, What happened? He said it's all under the bed. I laughed. His cleaning lady came. He asked if I had fun tonight? I said, oh yes, more than you know. I said, we have 4 months together. Nick asked what I was going to do, now that I didn't have a job and I wouldn't be going to school? Daddy is sending my tuition money. He said, I'd probably need it before I get my first check. Nick was happy that I was happy. We fell asleep and when we woke up the next morning we realized that we were in love. Nick ran downstairs and started breakfast. Kevin called Nick and asked him, how much time I had to gain the 10lbs? She reports January 8th. Kevin said, we have a lot of time then. I was walking down the steps when I heard my name mentioned. I stopped; Nick was sitting on the sofa with his back to me. He said, Kev I love her. It's going to kill me when we start touring. It's going to be worse when she's traveling. I know, we'll make it work somehow. I turned and went back upstairs. I slammed the door and came barreling down the stairs. Nick was standing now. He was saying, OK Kev, I'll tell her. What time you coming over? Check you later, then. I stood in front of him. I was almost 5' 9". Short for WNBA standards. He asked me why I was staring at him? I said, I missed you. I've only been down here for 10 minutes. I smiled again. Now what? I dropped my robe and stood only in my Orlando Miracle Jersey. Nick's eyebrows disappeared under the hair that was hanging in his eyes and he said Oh I see.

Chapter 15

I drove into work the following day to pick up my final paycheck. Surprise, surprise, it wasn't ready. I sat and talked to Jamie and told her how I was signed to the Orlando Miracle. She was so happy for me. She said Mr. Andrews was not happy that I had left. I said, Oh Well! She just laughed. She asked how Nick was? Just fine, I said with a smile. I didn't tell her who he was I didn't want it getting out and then the possible ramifications. I was there for almost an hour and no check. Nick called my cellular phone, where are you? I'm still waiting for my final check. Nick was not too happy. I'd been there almost an hour. He asked if I wanted him to come by? I said, what are you going to do? He said that he would send Tommy from his band. I said Tommy? I thought there was only 5 of you? He said, no he plays keyboards but he is buff and he'll get your check for you. You can tell your boss he's your big brother. I said, let me go talk to Mr. Andrews and see if he has my check, then I'll call you back. I hung up and went to Mr. Andrews's office and asked if my check was ready. He said, he hadn't been able to get to it yet, but he would. I told him I needed my check in 10 minutes or I'd get someone to help him write the check. He looked at me and said, so you're getting rough with me now are you? I like that. I said, 10 minutes and I left the office. I called Nick almost in tears. I said send Tommy Nick, I can't take this anymore. Nick said give Tommy ten minutes. He'd already called him and was on his way. I said, what does Tommy look like? Nick described him and when I saw that jacked up truck I went outside. I said are you Tommy? I am, he said. I was in tears and I told him what had just happened and that I'd now been here almost 90 minutes. Tommy gave me a big bear hug and said, show me the way. OK, now Tommy has these huge arms, he works out a lot. He has a nice chest too. Although he's short in stature he makes up for it in bulk. I went in to Mr. Andrew's office as Tommy stood outside the office door out of sight. I asked him from the doorway if my check was ready. Mr. Andrew's asked if I was going to get rough with him again? He said, because I like it when women get rough. I asked again for my check. He said, come sit down baby. Tommy came around the corner and asked him what the hell he thought he was doing? Tommy scared the shit out of him. He jumped back from his desk and asked who he was? He said, I'm Rachel's brother and I just listened to every word you just said to her. Mr. Andrews sat down. He was really nervous now. I was just kidding. Tommy said, once you give her the check she deserves we are going to file a Sexual Harassment suit against you. Mr. Andrews said, come on I was just kidding around. Tommy said, is her check ready yet? Mr. Andrews grabbed the checkbook and wrote out a check. He didn't even take out taxes. Tommy snatched it out of his hand and showed it to me. He said does this look right? I said yes, surprised at how much Tommy intimidated even me. Tommy looked at Mr. Andrews and said it better be. If it's not I'll be back. Tommy grabbed me by the arm and pulled me through the door. We walked through the office and out the front door. I said, how can I ever thank you? I gave him a hug. He said, anything for my boys. Are you all right? I said I was. He said you really should file that complaint. I said, it's over. Tommy said, it is for you, but how many woman work in that office? I told him I'd go file with the EEOC today. That a girl, he said. I hugged him again. He said by the way, congratulations! I looked at him confused. Orlando Miracle? Oh, thank you. He said, could you hook me up with tickets to a couple games? I said, anytime. I got in my car and called Nick. I got my check, I exclaimed. He said Tommy's the man. I laughed, he's a sweet guy. Where are you right now he asked? Pulling into your driveway. He laughed, I hung up the phone and Nick came out to greet me. Hey baby! I kissed him. We went inside, I was just eating lunch he said. I walked over to the table. Nick, you have to stop eating like this, I said. Pizza it's a staple. I got my bread group, the vegetable group, dairy… I stopped him. I said, Nick you're going to get sick. I said, I'm supposed to start training with Kevin this week, come with us. He said, do you mean I get to watch you sweat? Nick I'm serious. He said, he'd try and eat better. The next several weeks I got to know Nick and his world a lot better. I only listen to Backstreet Boys on my CD player. The guys were getting ready for their US Tour to begin. I'd watched them rehearse and I listened to them sing. These guys are so talented. They are meticulous. They stress over every detail. They really live for their fans. The promoters threw a party for the guys the night before they opened in Orlando. It was a great party, there were so many celebrities there. It would be my first taste of what was to come. Opening night was very hectic. The guys were cool and confident. They all gathered backstage for a prayer and a cheer before going out on stage. Nick walked me to my seat and kissed me. I said, have fun out there! He blew me a kiss and flashed me that winning smile of his. They rocked Orlando Arena to its foundation. The holidays came and went and it seemed that January was on us before no time. The guys had wrapped up their tour just before Christmas and they were catching up on sleep and spending time with their families. I was nearing the end of my time with Nick and it was taking its toll on my emotions.

Chapter 16

Nick and I wanted to do something special before I went off to training camp. I was leaving for Phoenix in 3 days. We decided to just stay in. Isolated from all of our friends. It would be a week before I would see Nick again. He said, he'd fly out to Phoenix on the weekend. I had practice all week so it wasn't going to be fun for him. The three days seemed to just disappear. Nick drove me to the airport. I was a wreck. The last four months were the best four months of my life. Nick said he would see me on weekends. I told him it wasn't the same. It was finally time to say goodbye. Nick told me he loved me and to call him every chance I got. I was sobbing now, I felt like such a child. I took my seat on the airplane and as soon as the seat belt sign turned off I went to the bathroom to wash my face. I touched up my make up and took my seat in first class. Courtesy of the Orlando Miracle's. I called Nick's cellular. I heard his sweet voice. Hi, I said. Nick said, I was just thinking about you. It made me smile. I asked what he was doing? He said he was here with the guys. They'd come to cheer him up. Nick passed the phone to Brian. Brian said, What up girl? In a silly voice. I laughed. He was always trying to make other people feel better. I said, I missed Nick. He said you've only been gone 45 minutes. I asked how Nick was? He's crying like a baby. Nick grabbed the phone and I could tell he was walking away from the guys. I said, how are you really? He said he missed me and it was harder than he thought it would be. I told him he could come and stay with me. He said, what would I do during the day? I said, it's only 19.00 to Los Angeles each way. He could visit his parents. Nick said he would think about it. I told him I loved him and I'd see him on Friday. He blew a kiss through the phone. I arrived in Arizona with the rest of the women on the team. They had set us all up in condos. The first day we were to get settled and attend a meeting that would give us an idea of what our week would be like. The first three days would be nothing but practice. The coach wanted to see who he had and what position we'd be playing. They needed to pick there starting five. Thursday and Friday would be photo shoots and publicity. I couldn't wait to call Nick. We attended a dinner where we all had to introduce ourselves to the team. I was nervous about speaking in front of so many people. I stood up and thought of Nick. I was speaking to Nick. I told them I was originally from Maine but had been living in Orlando for the last year. I was All State my senior year of high school. I told them I was happy to be part of this organization. It went on and on. I got to know two girls pretty well and we seemed to hit it off. Dana was from Los Angeles and she was drafted right out of high school. Justine was from Ohio, she would most probably be out center. She was 6' 6" tall. She was as insecure tall as I was short. The dinner was finally over and I hurried back to the condo and called Nick. He answered the phone on the first ring. Hi, I said, He said, I've been waiting for your call. I told him I couldn't wait to call him. He said you sound up, what's going on? I said, I only have practice Monday through Wednesday, can you come on Wednesday night? He said, what happens on Thursday and Friday? I said, photo shoot and publicity. I was hoping that maybe you could help me? He said he'd be here. I told him I had to speak in front of everyone tonight and I only got through it because I closed my eyes and pictured him. He said how'd you picture me? I laughed, I said I miss you so much Nick. He said, C'mon don't get emotional on me. He asked me what I thought about it all? I said it was too early to tell. They gave us our schedule for the week, which is basically practice 6am until 8pm everyday. It would be combined with weight training and instruction. Nick said, I bet they'll make you coach by the end of the week. I said I doubted it. I said 6am comes early I'd better get ready for bed. Nick said just one more minute. We talked for another 30. I said, I really have to go now. I love you Nick and I'll see you Wednesday. He told me he loved me and I got ready for bed. I arrived at Sun Devil stadium with the rest of the women. The bus picked us up outside our complex at 5:30am. I was so thankful to Kevin at the end of the first day of practice. It was tough but I'd made it through. I was soaking in a hot bath when Nick called. He asked how my day went. I said, I'm so tired. He laughed. I said, when he saw Kevin to tell him I owe him big time. Nick asked why? I said if it wasn't for Kevin, I'd be on an airplane right now. The practices are tough. They'd be making cuts at the end of every week until they got their team. Nick said, you have nothing to worry about. I said, I really hate to cut this short but I have got to get out of this tub and into bed. Nick said good night. I went to bed wrapped in a towel. The second day wasn't any easier than the first I just kept reminding myself that Nick would be in town tomorrow night. The coaches were meticulous in their decision making process. I ended another day of practice and ended up in a hot tub and into bed in a towel again. At the end of the third day, I was sore. I was actually looking forward to the photo shoot and publicity shoot. Nick said he'd take a cab to the condo so I wouldn't have to go out to the airport. I agreed with that decision. I went home and took a quick shower and dressed for Nick. I was sound asleep on my sofa when Nick knocked on the door.

Chapter 17

I opened the door and Nick stood before me. I leapt into his arms and kissed him all over his face. Oh, I missed you so much I told him. We walked in and he kicked the door closed and he lifted me into his arms and kissed me so passionately I thought my heart would stop. He asked me where the bedroom was. I pointed down the hall. He picked me up and carried me to the bed. He stripped me of my clothing and undressed himself. I wanted him so badly I couldn't stand it. We clawed at each other finally climaxing at the same time. We were both sweating and panting. I fell asleep in his arms I was so exhausted. The next day Nick accompanied me on my photo shoot and Friday we went for our Publicity shots and filmed a few commercials. On Friday Night we flew to Los Angeles to meet Nick's parents. It was a wonderful weekend but over way too fast. Nick flew home on the red eye Sunday night. Over the next few months we flew back and forth. I'd made it through all the cuts and was a starting player. On May 15 we had our first pre season game in Orlando. All the guys were there. My friends from the insurance agency and even BJ who always said she'd never set foot inside a sports arena. The highlight of my night was my family. My parents and siblings had all come down from Maine to see me play. Our first game was against the Houston Comets. We kicked their ass. We beat them 89 to 76. Daddy said he was proud of me. I introduced Nick to my family and we all went to the post-game party. We were all in good spirits. Our coaches were pleased and just hoped we'd hold up for the regular season. Nick was proud of me too. We remained undefeated in pre season play. We were a force to be reckoned with, said the Orlando Tribune. On September 5 we hit big time. With pre season over and sitting pretty in the number one spot, we were overly confident. We were building a loyal following. I had little girls asking me for an autograph. It felt so weird. Nick and the guys were touring together. Whenever we were close enough we'd try to make it each other's events. On December 24th Nick asked me to marry him. I was shocked. I wasn't spending much time with him. He wasn't spending much time with me. I said No. He was surprised by my answer. He asked why? Nick we don't see each other anymore I said. I'm traveling or you're traveling. It wouldn't work out. He said, we wouldn't have to get married right away. He said the press already has us married anyway. I looked at him and said, I thought I knew you, but I guess I don't. I turned t leave his house. He came back to me and apologized. He said he wasn't good with words, what he meant was we were a well-known couple that spent every possible moment together. He said he loved me. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I looked at him and said, well since you put it that way. I kissed him and he slipped an engagement ring on my finger. I had the next 2 days off but Nick had a concert tonight in Orlando. It was his last show so I went with him. The guys all congratulated us but I could tell they were as surprised as I was that Nick asked me. The last night of their concert was sold out. Nick was up to do his solo. He was still performing "I need you tonight" after all these years. The fans still loved it too. He started to sing the song but stopped. He apologized to the band and the fans and started again. He stopped again and apologized. He said, I need some inspiration. It's not working tonight, I need my lady here with me. I felt my heart stop. I couldn't breathe. I felt myself being lifted up out of my chair and pushed out on stage. Nick said please welcome, Orlando Miracle's own, Rachel Rogers. The crowd roared. I looked out into the lights unable to see anyone and just squinted and waved. Nick led me to a stool and sat me down. He motioned to the band and he got down on one knee and sang to me. It was the most romantic moment of my entire life. Once Nick finished the song the crowd went wild. He kissed me on the lips and led me off stage. Before I could say anything he was off for the final wardrobe change. The party afterward was great. Nick and I left early, we had some catching up to do. My season was winding down. We were in the final playoffs. We were being beat by of all teams, the New York Liberty. I found it very ironic. Nick and the guys were there to cheer me on. I was so nervous this last game against NY, it was all tied up, 2 games a piece. We were in Orlando and had the support of our hometown behind us. We had a near capacity crowd. Our coaches were motivating us in the locker room and we said one final prayer to God, the Almighty Father in heaven to allow us to play to our full potential. The crowd went wild as my teammates were called. Then my name was called and the house was rocking. I was quite popular not necessarily for my playing, but because I was dating a Backstreet Boy. As a special treat, they were singing the Star Spangled Banner for us tonight. So that is why we probably had a near capacity crowd. We took our places on the sidelines and the guys took center court. Nick winked at me. We placed our right hands over our hearts and listened as the guys sang A Capella. Once they finished the walked over to our team and shook our hands. I was at the end of the line so I got all the kisses.

Chapter 18

The game finally got under way. There was a huge celebrity turn out. It was intimidating for me to see all the stars. The score was pretty even through out the game. I had to sit for an interview at half time. I fielded a lot of questions about Nick and what that was like. I kept trying to reel this guy in saying I didn't want to talk about my personal life. Let's stay focused on the game. He kept prying. I said, you know what, I have to go and I unclipped the microphone and headed back to the locker room. My coach was not happy. I went and sat down in a huff on the bench. She was in my face faster than you could ever imagine. I told her I was sorry, but I was here to play the game and my personal life is just that. Personal. She left me alone but she was pissed. She benched me for the third quarter. I couldn't believe it. I kept looking at the guys. We were down by 8 points now. I was begging to be put I the game. She wouldn't even acknowledge me. I was pacing the sidelines just waiting for the minute I'd get to play. The quarter ended. I told her in the huddle put me in, I'll talk about my damn sleeping habits I don't care. I just don't think you should let us lose after all the hard work we've done. She looked me in the face and said, you finally get it. We are a new team and we need these guys out here. Don't you ever pull that higher than mighty shit again. Chambers was benched and I took the floor. The crowd was happy with that decision. We were down by 12 now. The only thing I had going for me was that I was rested. I don't know where the burst of energy came from but my team and I was on fire and the NY Liberty never knew what hit them. We won the game by eight points. We were the Champions. The balloons and confetti dropped from the rafters and the Caps came out and we were holding tee shirts with Orlando Miracles Champions written all over them. I just fell to the floor when the final buzzer went off. My body was wracked with sobs. We had done it. I was helped up by my teammates. The NY Liberty congratulated us. I was crying I could barely see. I hugged my teammates and my coaches and headed over to Nick. He was screaming and crying and jumping up and down. He saw me coming and made his way to the floor. He picked me up and spun me around. You did it! He kept screaming. I kissed him and he put me down as the cameras were moving in for the interviews. Nick stood behind me holding both my hands. I thanked Orlando for supporting us and coming to the games. Without you Orlando this wouldn't be possible. They asked why I sat out for the third quarter. I said well my coach wasn't too happy with my half time interview and she benched me. The interviewer said it was probably the best defense for us because I was on fire the fourth quarter. The interviewer stuck the microphone in Nick's face and asked him if he had any comments. He said, I'm proud of her but this is her night and that's all I want to say. I put my cap on his head and he kissed me and went back to his seat. We were about to get our first trophy. We were so very excited. The commissioner of the WNBA came out and he made a little speech and presented us our first trophy. The coach pulled me and Dana to talk since we were the too consistent high scoring players. Dana spoke first. She thanked everyone for their support and patience with us as a team. She was met by applause. I grabbed the microphone and was very emotional. I thanked my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all things. I thanked my parents and the fans. Without the fans we wouldn't be here. And finally to my Nick, thanks for all your love and support and picking me up when I was down. I love you. They went mad! My team ran off in the direction of the locker room and I ran in Nick's direction. I was so emotional that I could hardly breathe. My parents were there now too. I fell into Nick's arms. He told me he loved me. Daddy was shaking he was so happy. I hugged him and mom and then I noticed the cameras I was mad. I couldn't even have a private moment. Before I could respond to them Nick grabbed me and kissed me. He told me to go take a shower. I kissed him again and waved to the fans and ran for the locker room. I walked in amidst the champagne shower. There was yet another camera there too. I walked back to the shower and stood inside the stall and cried. I sunk down to the bottom and let it all out. Everything I'd ever wanted had come true. I finally got up and joined our little party. Once it was OK to shower I did. I got dressed and ran outside because I knew Nick was waiting for me. I found him on the court. I dropped my gear on a bench and the sound echoed throughout the Arena. Nick walked to me with the ball in his hand and said, I think I could take you now. I said oh yeah? He dropped the ball and kissed me. He was still wearing my hat. He said let's go home.

Chapter 19

With our season over I would have a few months off. Unfortunately, Nick and the guys were touring again. So I traveled with them for some of the dates and the rest of the time I stayed at home. BJ and I got a lot closer in that time. We'd go shopping and to the movies. She tried to ask a lot of personal questions about Nick, I thought that extremely weird. I told her I never kiss and tell. Once we got over that we were fine. Her sisters came out to visit and I got to meet them. Leslie and Angel. Angel was Aaron's twin, but they didn't really look like twins. They were fraternal twins and not identical. We went to the beach a lot and spent too much time at the mall. Nick finally got a few days off in between dates and he flew home. He was surprised to find me at BJ's house. I told him I was getting to know my future family. He smiled, he said I'd like to get to know you better right now, if you know what I mean? Everyone laughed and I followed Nick home. Angel said, that was gross. Nick just said you never mind. We didn't even make it up the stairs. Nick had my shorts and tank top off. I wasn't wearing a bra and he thought that interesting. I told him I thought he might be home today. He was extremely horny and came too quickly. We walked upstairs and we lay on the bed where he began to satisfy me. We lay in each other's arms for what seemed like forever. I heard the downstairs door close and someone was running up the stairs. I looked at Nick, who is it? Before he could answer BJ stood in my doorway. Aren't you guys done yet? She said. Nick asked her how she got in. She said the front door was open. I laughed I can only imagine what is downstairs now. Nick asked what she wanted? Let's go swimming! I told her we'd be down in a minute. She said let's go now. Nick lifted up the sheet and she took off running. He closed the bedroom door and locked it. We both dressed in swimsuits and joined BJ, Angel, and Leslie in the pool. Nick barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner. It was fun seeing his sisters again. It became very tough for Nick and I to go out into public now. If he wasn't being recognized then I was. We were having less and less time alone. He was used to it, but I wasn't. We traveled a lot during his tour and by the time that was finished it was almost time for me to go back for spring training. Although I loved and cared for him I felt us drifting apart. Once I went back to training in Arizona our calls got less and less frequent. He stopped coming to Arizona all together. Once the season started he came to a few home games but by the end of my second season I mailed him back his ring and asked him to forward my belongings to my home. We had drifted too far apart. We were in the finals again this time against Houston. I noticed Nick and the guys in the stands. I was doing pretty well. During half time I received a message from Nick. He asked me to talk to him after the game. He'd wait for me. We went back out on the court and were shooting baskets waiting for the third quarter to start. As I ran by the guys I waved up at them. Nick looked so sad. The third quarter I was on fire, unstoppable they wrote in the newspapers. I was having a great game. I saw the guys leading the section in cheering. When the fourth quarter started I was on the bench. I had 4 fouls and my coach wanted to save me. I sat on the sidelines and watched my team. We were down 15 and it didn't look good. Coach looked at me and asked if I was ready to go in. I gave her the thumbs up sign. I walked to the center court line and waited for the next foul or time out to be called. Once that happened I was in the crowd was on their feet I felt invincible. We went for the quick points mostly three's. We were within 4 points in the last 2 minutes of the game. We took our last time out and coach devised a plan. We ran the ball up to our opponent's basket and Dana scored 2 points. The Comet's brought the ball down to the other side and missed. It went like that until the last 7 seconds. The Comet's had the ball at half court Dana slapped it away and I retrieved it I looked at the basket 4 seconds on the clock I let it fly from half court. Nothing but Net! We won by one point. I was crazy with emotions. This game is too much emotion for me. My body hurt and I wanted to sleep. I headed back to the locker room and jumped into the shower. I dressed and ducked out the back door. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I drove home in silence and called my parents. Daddy was proud of me. I thanked him. I told him I probably won't renew my contract. I'm too tired and I'm missing out on life. Daddy said to do what made me happy. I went upstairs and undressed for bed. I had just fallen asleep when my doorbell rang. It was 12:30am. Who would be ringing my doorbell? I looked out my bedroom window and saw Nick's truck. Oh no, I forgot he wanted me to meet him. I ran downstairs and opened the door. I apologized for leaving I forgot he was waiting. Nick came in and it was obvious he was distracted with something. What is it Nick? He asked me why I gave him his ring back? Oh Nick, I'm too tired to go into all this tonight, can we talk about this in the morning? All of a sudden I was the bad guy now. He was angry with me for breaking the engagement off with out even talking to him. I told him that we weren't even spending any time together. We never talked. Our careers were breaking us apart. Nick said it was working out between us. It wasn't. I asked him to come upstairs. Let's sleep on it and talk in the morning, OK?

Chapter 20

I woke up the next morning and Nick was still asleep beside me. I got out of bed and went downstairs for breakfast. I was reading the paper and drinking coffee when Nick came downstairs. He poured himself a cup of coffee and sat across from me. I put the paper down and smiled at him. He said we have got to talk. I said go ahead. Nick put my engagement ring on the table. Why did you give this back? Don't you love me? Of course I love you Nick, but we've grown apart. Can't you see that? You're busy with your career and I'm busy with mine. There is no time for "us." He just shook his head. We've finished touring I'll be home for awhile now, Nick said. That's not the point. When you finish touring my season starts. So our relationship is living out of suitcases stealing moments here and there. I can't live that way. What happens after our wedding and I get pregnant? What do we do then? Do I fly all over the world to be with you then too? Don't get me wrong, I really love you with my whole heart. I've got some major decisions to make between now and September and I don't need anymore pressure. What decisions Nick asked? I don't think I'm going to renew my contract. Why? He said. Nick it consumes too much of my time. Just like your career. We eat, sleep and breathe our work. I don't want life passing me by. I wanted to do it, I did it and it's done now. Nick said it sounded like I've already made up my mind. He said that if I left the WNBA then we would have more time together. I guess we would but I don't feel like we're very close anymore Nick, and that makes me so sad. We'll have time to make up for that, please don't leave me Rachel. My tears started falling I couldn't hold them back anymore. Nick I just don't know. I'm so tired I can't even think clearly. I need time, I need more time. Nick looked down his eyes glassy. He left the ring on the table and stood up to go. He looked back at me once and walked out the door. I went back to bed, I just couldn't take it anymore. I was too exhausted. Around 6pm that evening the doorbell awakened me. I walked downstairs and BJ was waiting. She brushed passed me and turned on a light. What's the matter with you? She asked. I was sleeping I said. It's too early to be in bed she said. I told her I never got out of bed this morning. She said that I must have because Nick's been crying on her shoulder all day. Why did you break up with him? BJ is too complicated. There is never any time for us. It's his career, it's my career and I'm too tired to do anything anymore. My life was better when I was in school and working part time. She said no it wasn't you were miserable until Nick came along. If it weren't for Nick you'd still be miserable. I don't have time for this I told her as I walked back up to my room. She followed right behind me. What don't you have time for? Your life? You know you love Nick, you know you want to spend your life with him. I was supposed to be you Maid of Honor. What's going to happen now? I buried my head under my pillow. I just wanted to sleep. She finally left and I went back to sleep. I dreamed about Nick and the life that we would have. I also dreamed about how ugly it would become if we didn't split up. I was torn and confused. I woke up at 5am and thought I saw something move in my room. I switched on my light to see Nick sitting in my rocking chair. Nick, you scared me. He was quietly crying in the corner. I got up and asked him what was wrong? He said he loved me and didn't want us to end. I dropped my head in my hands and sat on the floor. Nick, I just need some time. Can't you give me some time? He said he didn't want to because I might get used to him not being around. I could never get used to not being with you. He said then why won't you marry me? I stood up and threw myself on the bed. Nick! Why won't you listen to me? I yelled. Can't you give me two days? That's all I ask, two days and I'll give you my decision. I'm under so much pressure I cried, and I can't handle anymore. Nick I'll tell you again, I love you, but right now I need time for me. Can you understand that? It has nothing to do with us and everything to do with me. I just wish I had someone to talk to. I don't want to talk to you about it Nick, I want someone partial. Kevin maybe, I said. I got pretty close to him when we were training together. He seems pretty wise, I think he could help. Nick said he call Kevin for me. NO, I don't want you to call Kevin, I want to call Kevin. I know you're just trying to help but I've got do this alone. Can you please let me do that? Nick came and laid on the bed next to me. He said he loved me and just wanted what was best. I know you do, that's what I want too. I held him and we fell asleep again. I woke up in his arms. This time he was awake before me. He leaned down and kissed me on the lips. I love you Nick, I said. Please believe that. He said he did and would give me all the time I needed. Nick left and I called Kevin. He said he'd be over in a few minutes. I was out back shooting baskets when he came over. He said he thought it was me he heard back here. One look in my eyes and Kevin knew it was big. I shot the ball as my tears fell. What's wrong? Did you and Nick have a fight?

Chapter 21

Yes and no, I said as I sat on the picnic table. Kevin came and sat next to me. What can I do to help? He said. Well I need an impartial person and someone who will give me the God's honest truth. He said, I could trust him on that. I went into the fact that come next month my contract expired. I would have the choice of renewing the contract or walking away. He shook his head. I then told him how in my second season with the Miracle's that Nick and I spent less and less time together. I ultimately gave him his ring back. Kevin closed his eyes and bowed his head. I said I just don't know what to do. Nick came over last night and we argued and he said he loves me and I said I loved him. But with our schedules it's just not feasible. I'm exhausted all the time. This WNBA isn't as easy as it looks. Everyone wants pieces of me in some way, shape, or form. Nick and I can't even go to dinner without being stopped and asked for autographs. Kevin said, what do you want Rachel? What would make you happy? I want to be with Nick. I don't want to play ball anymore. But I'm afraid that I'll let everyone down. My teammates, my coaches. My family, I'll have let them all down. How do you figure that? You graduated high school. You helped out in your family's business. You moved to Florida to go to school. When do you get to do what Rachel wants to do? Stop living to please everyone else and start living to please you. That fan stuff that's never going to go away. If you keep playing you'll be more well known. Heck there is already talk of you being one of the top ten players in the league. So you need to follow your heart. What's in your heart Rachel? I said, I love Nick and I choose Nick. Kevin hugged me and said well let's go tell him that. If I know Nick he's got his head in a gallon of vanilla ice cream right now. I said I had to get something first. Will you drive me Kev? He said sure. I ran inside and picked up my engagement ring and my purse. I locked up the house and jumped into Kev's black BMW. We pulled up in front of Nick's house and Kev walked right in. Nicky, where are you? He walked out of the kitchen. What did she say? He asked and then he saw me. I walked over to him and asked him to open his hand. He opened his hand and I placed the engagement ring in the palm of his hand. He met my eyes and he had such pain in them. I said, would you please put this ring back on my finger? He just cried and slipped the ring on my finger and hugged me. What's happening he finally asked? We sat down on the sofa and I said I was leaving the WNBA. He asked if I was sure that's what I wanted? I said it is. I want you to know that I'm doing it for me, not for you. I don't want you to feel like you are making me do this. I've always wanted to be with you. I can't go on playing that game. It makes me miserable. Kevin stood up and said he had to go. He congratulated us on getting re-engaged and kissed me on the cheek and hugged Nick. Once Kevin left I asked Nick if he was eating Vanilla ice cream? He said why is there some on my face? I said no. Kevin said you ate it when you got upset. He smiled. I said, what I want to know is did you buy it or did you have it delivered? We both laughed.

On October 15th I married Nick Carter and we've never been apart since. We have something very special and I have no regrets over the decisions I had to make. With our family and friends present we married at Trinity Christian Church of Orlando. We have overcome my obstacles and our love is strong and pure. After returning home from our honeymoon Nick asked when I wanted to start a family? I said I don't know. Did you want to wait or do you want to start now? He said, let's start now. He pulled the covers up over our heads and made love to me. He's a good man. Very sensitive and compassionate. We will live happily ever after.
