The Maltese Islands, situated in the Central Mediterranean, comprises three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino, all of which are inhabited, together with some very small barren and uninhabited islets and rocks. With a total surface area of only about 313 sq km, and a population in 2005 of 404039, the islands are densely populated. Furthermore the Maltese population is a relatively closed community rendering the population an ideal one for epidemiological studies. |
