The five-year Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is an accredited program designed to prepare the resident for practice and consultation in orthopaedic surgery and the option of subspecialty training.  The full-time faculty in the department is composed of 25 active orthopaedic surgeons.

Two residency positions are available at each of the four program levels.  Residents rotate through the following areas during that time:

Fractures and trauma (six months)
Adult orthopaedics/Clinic specialties (18 to 24 months) *
Pediatrics (six months)
Laboratory research elective (up to six months)
Outpatient clinic (six months)

*Includes subspecialty rotations in upper extremity surgery, sports medicine, spine surgery, joint reconstruction and replacement, and rehabilitation.

Residents care for patients in clinic and outpatient office settings.  In the Orthopaedic Clinic, residents see patients, diagnose conditions, discuss proper treatment and follow-up, schedule any preoperative consultations and follow the patient postoperatively with direct oversight from the faculty members present in the clinic, appropriate to residents' competence and level of training.  Chief residents are responsible for the management and oversight of the clinic for a six-month period during their PGY5 year.  Approximately 350 patients are treated each month in the Orthopaedic Clinic.  In addition, residents are required to participate in the approximately 62,500 patient visits that occur annually in the faculty's outpatient offices.
